The FCA-SW tour of the Nethercutt started on Nov. 15 at the beautiful home of Denise Ferrari, who hosted all the atten - dees to a home cooked brunch. Denise did a great job and everyone ate their fill and more!

All the cars left together after negotiating the gate down the street from her house. We went through Placerita and Sand Canyon roads over hills and around curves, winding up in Sylmar, home to the Nethercutt.

Most of the Ferraris (and a few non-Fer - raris) were able to park together in a row in the Nethercutt Museum lot. We pro - ceeded across the street to the bottom level of the Nethercutt Collection across the street, where we were met by our tour guide.

The Nethercutt Collection resides in a four story building. The first level is a two-story high hall lined with mirrors and marble and containing a collection of one-of-a- kind cars. Many of the cars belonged to celebrities from the back in the day. The star of the collection is the Duesenberg Twenty Grand, so-named because it sold for $20,000 when new. Today its value would be closer to $20 million. The mez - zanine and upper floor contained a price - less collection of hood ornaments, watches, and especially automated musi - cal instruments. The instruments were a century old or more but all were in excel - lent condition and played perfectly. The tour ended with a concert from the huge 5,000-piped Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ in the center of the top floor.

During the tour we were accompanied by Jack Nethercutt, a former race car driver

It was a great day with a wonderful brunch, excellent weather and a great tour of the Nethercutt. The event was a sell-out so we need to schedule it again. SF

OAKMONT COUNTRY CLUB HO LI DAY PARTY 201 4

Article By Denise Ferrari Photos By Diana Dang

Some Ferrari owners balked at bringing their cars out after a big storm in LA. We are truly spoiled by the weather, and are rewarded with mostly beautiful, sunny days for our driving pleasure.

On December 13th it was worth bringing my F335 Spider out for a run to Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. The Club set aside their employee parking lot for us to have plenty of parking, and even made sure there was no debris after the storm. Walking in to the private club, we were warmly greeted and ushered in to a fes - tively decorated room. Tasty hors-d’oeu - vres were passed as we visited with fellow club members. Soon it was time to sit down for a delightful salad, followed by a juicy New York steak with specially se - lected sides. The desert was a scrump - tious brownie and peppermint ice cream treat, a perfect fit for the holiday season.

The highlight of the afternoon were the carolers, four Dickens-style costumed pro - fessional singers there to sing traditional and contemporary carols a capella. They started with a few classics, then opened it up to requests. The beautiful voices and animated moves delighted us with a seemingly unlimited repertoire of holiday songs. With our bellies full and the great entertainment, we left ready for the sea - son!

Thank you to everyone who attended and thanks also to Diana Dang for the photos. SF

On a very cloudy Saturday morning in late February, Mother Nature paid tribute to and only blue sky covered the Petersen Automotive Museum. Conse - quently over 100 Ferraris participated in the second annual Petersen Automotive Museum Enzo Ferrari Birthday Cruise In to celebrate Enzo Ferrari’s 117th birthday.

While most of the cars were modern, a number of beautiful vintage cars were on hand, and fitting the occasion Fast Toys brought an Enzo…..a very FAST toy! Ferrari Los Angeles brought a stunning black California T and two wicked 458 Speciales were crowd pleasers.

Thanks to the hosts, Terry Karges, Petersen Museum Director and Sandy Scott, Petersen Museum Special Events Director, and their collaborators that provided Italian caffe and gourmet bagels. Next year, the event will be extra special, as the newly renovated museum will be open. SF

Article By Peter Riley Photos By Bill Makepeace, Tom Brockmiller, Tex Otto

This year’s Ortega Run was more like a walk, thanks to the escorts provided by the CHP, Orange County Sheriff’s Depart - ment, the FBI, the CIA, and who knows maybe even the NSA. It was slow.

Phil Hill mapped out the original Ortega route back in the 1960s. Despite all the changes over time, it remains a beautiful drive from the I-5 to the scenic wine coun - try of Temecula.

Before starting out a member commented as she signed the liability waiver, “This must have been a lot of work to put to - gether.” I think I stammered something in the affirmative. But looking back it really wasn’t difficult at all. Everyone was so helpful and encouraging it didn’t seem like work.

Tom Brockmiller and Jack Curtis are two old pros who have organized the Ortega Run so many times I think they’ve lost count. Their experience and accessibility proved invaluable. I owe them a debt of gratitude. Tom planned a scenic tour to Temecula that we all enjoyed. Jack was the point man and made final arrange - ments with The Ponte Vineyard and Inn. Tom’s wife Linda helped with the clerical details and liability release signatures. Anna McKinley did a terrific job with club email announce- ments and online regis - tration. Many thanks to photographers Tom Brockmiller, Bill Makepeace, and Tex Otto for taking superb pictures.

Jack, Tom and I were very impressed with the knowledge, professionalism and help given by Ponte Special Events Coordinator, Photo captions this page from top: If this 365 GTC/4 is any indication, it looks like this year’s cabernet will be very good at the Ponte Winery. Vineyard owners Claudio Ponte and Leah Schmidt’s friendliness and hospitality overwhelmed us. They treated everyone to a surprise champagne welcoming toast. And they also provided two lovely bottles of wine for each table to accompany our scrumptious Italian fare. After lunch we were invited to the barrel room to taste special vintages directly from oak barrels. The surprises continued. Later in the af - ternoon, thirty members who booked accommodations at the Inn, enjoyed wine and hors d’oeuvres in Claudio’s private suite.

Southern California has a beautiful new Ferrari dealership to entice enthusiasts of the rolling works of art from Maranello. Located in Torrance on Hawthorne Blvd’s auto row, drivers of boring, mind numbing, monotonous and monochromatic vehicles, can now quench their thirst for passion behind the steering wheel.

The contemporary glass enclosed two- story structure offers a showroom and service center which caters solely to prancing horses in the 23,000 square foot facility. They will surely have to hire a full-time window cleaner to keep the glass clean from admirer’s faces and drool.

To a full house, Giacomo Mattioli, Presi - dent of the Mattioli Automotive Group, alongside Torrance Mayor Patrick Furey symbollically cut a fittingly red ribbon to officially commence business in the South Bay. An Italian themed triple-layer Ferrari cake was also presented to Mattioli and Furey in honor of the occasion.

While the DJ spun ambient music, min - glers roamed through a gallery of Ferrari photographs, Hublot watches and plenty of open and closed sports cars about which to dream. Each of the current Ferrari models were on display in their two floors of showrooms including a red California T, a yellow 458 Special A and a super exclu - sive LaFerrari on center stage.

On a beautiful February Saturday morning while half the country was buried in snow, the California South Bay was sunny and warm and the sound of Prancing Horses was in the air. A Tech Session was pro - vided for our members by the country’s newest Ferrari Showroom, South Bay Ferrari, which is part of the Mattioli Auto - motive Group (Ferrari Beverly Hills/Los Angeles/Silicon Valley and Scuderia Corsa, Racing with Ferrari).

Two dozen lucky FCA-SW members were invited to have their Ferraris inspected by factory trained technicians: each car was given a complete checkup by Service Manager Chris Bour and his team and a comprehensive summary was provided. Ferrari South Bay’s service department is very high tech and as clean as a hospital ER. A very Italian Espresso Bar was set up with amazing espresso, pastries and finger food.

In addition to the complimentary car in - spection, General Manager Eddie Brodsky guided us through the brand new dra - matic 2-story, 23,000 square foot show - room that was packed with amazing cars that included a spectacular white 458 All members are encouraged to visit Ferrari South with black top and red interior, a California Bay, located at the Palos Verdes foothill. There were two second prize winners. We’re proud to announce that one was our very own Tony DeRosa of the Southwest Region, with the other recipient being Fred Burton, Regional Director from Florida. Both won F1 & F2 Packages to the 2015 Annual Meet in Monterey. On March 21, 2015 we held a FCA Judging seminar in advance Thank you to all who partipated in the contest to get more of Concorso Ferrari and the 2015 FCA Meet in Monterey this Ferrari enthusiasts to join the FCA. Congrats again to Tony! August. The idea behind the seminar was to be a refresher for SF existing FCA judges, for owners to find out what is involved in having their Ferrari judged, and also in hopes of recruiting new judges. We had about 25 attendees.

We held it at the Ford Design Center in Irvine, CA and our host FCA member John Clinard was gracious in allowing us to use the large conference center in the building. We showed the FCA judging presentation that is on the national website.

Tom Brockmiller, Peter Riley, and I gave some of the presenta - tions and all of us answered questions about judging techniques , subjective items, and deductions in general.

The Judging sheets the FCA uses also have a page for each sec - tion (chassis, interor and exteror) which shows what deductions should be taken for incorrect items, so that the deductions are consistent through out the process.

We then proceeded outside where several attendees brought their Ferraris that we could practice on. Every one who wanted to practice was given a clipboard with the three judging sheets used for each car. We had a good array of cars from a 512BB Boxer, several 308s, a 328, a 550 and a 355 Spider. Tom, Peter and I helped coach everyone on what to look for, sug - gested deductions for certain items and critiqued the judging sheets. Overall, we had a good result and I hope everyone learned something. SF

NASCAR driver Tony Stewart observed that a modern F-1 car “looks like some kid's science project.” Back in the 1950s and 1960s, race cars had a classic look to them.

My favorite from that period is the 1961 Ferrari Formula 1 car. Called the “Shark- nose” due to a pointed nose with twin scoops, its powerful V-6 engine allowed it to dominate at nearly every track. Ameri - can Phil Hill won the 1961 World Champi - onship in one of these cars.

CMC Models, a German company, makes an outstanding 1:18 scale model of the F156 Sharknose. Actually they make three versions of this model representing cars driven by Phil Hill and Wolfgang Von Trips. The model is highly detailed - right down to the rivets holding the scoops and windscreen in place. The engine, trans - mission and rear brakes can be accessed by lifting the rear cover. The front part of the car can also be removed to show the fully detailed radiator and driver compart - ment.

The model is made of several hundred parts. The paint is flawless. The steering works and the knockoffs on the real wire wheels also work, as do the independent suspension, shocks and springs. In short the model is a real work of art. The model is advertised a “limited edition” in that CMC made 6,000 units of three versions of the F156 Sharknose. You can buy the model from cmc-modelcars.de (if available). I found it on E-Bay. Expect to pay around $400 for the model. SF
