1992 Daimler DS420 Limousine the Last DS420 and the Last Car with an XK Engine
1992 Daimler DS420 Limousine The last DS420 and the last car with an XK engine The long line of Daimler limousines finally came to an end in 1992 with this car, the last example of the DS420 range. It was also the last car to use the 44-year old Jaguar XK engine design When Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation in 1966, both companies manufactured limousine models, the ageing Daimler Majestic Major and Vanden Plas Princess 4 litre. It was decided to replace both of these older models with a single new limousine, which would bear the Daimler name and would be based on Jaguar components, but which would be assembled in the Vanden Plas factory at Kingsbury in London. The result was the DS420 which was launched in 1968 and co-incidentally became the first new model of the newly-merged British Leyland company. It was based on an extended floorpan from the Jaguar 420G, which made the DS420 the biggest ever British car with unitary body construction. The engine was the well-known Jaguar XK in 4.2 litre form, with an automatic gearbox as standard. The semi- razor edge style of the body was probably inspired by some of the classic Hooper bodies on Daimler chassis The basic bodyshell was supplied by Motor Panels in Coventry and mechanical components were fitted by Jaguar at Browns Lane, before the limousines were sent to Vanden Plas for final assembly and trim. When the Vanden Plas factory closed in 1979, final assembly and trim moved back to a special Limousine Shop in the Jaguar factory at Browns Lane The DS420 enjoyed a near monopoly of its market, and many were also supplied in chassis form for hearse bodywork. -

CORROZZERIA ZAGATO: CARS of the "LIGHTNING Z" HONORED at the 19TH ANNUAL AMELIA CONCOURS D'elegance"
Event Information Tickets Visitors Guide Charity Sponsors News & Media Gall ery CORROZZERIA ZAGATO: CARS OF THE "LIGHTNING Z" HONORED AT THE 19TH ANNUAL AMELIA CONCOURS d'ELEGANCE" Photo by Michael Furman The cars wearing Zagato's "lightning Z" badge have become classics and icons. On March 9, 2014 the 19th annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance will honor the brilliance and creativity of Ugo Zagato and his heirs with a class of Zagato-bodied cars from the likes of Ferrari, Maserati, Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Hispano-Suiza, FIAT, Rolls-Royce, Lancia, Lamborghini, MG, Bentley, Porsche, Spyker and even British supercar builder Aston Martin, for whom Zagato created their masterpiece, the landmark DB4 GT Zagato. "The most beautiful car is the one that wins," said Enzo Ferrari. As leader of Alfa Romeo's racing department during the 1930s, Enzo Ferrari saw fleets of Alfa Romeo racers wearing Zagato's functional and beautiful coachwork win scores of legendary road races. Sons Elio and Gianni Zagato instantly grasped their father's elegant and simple philosophy; "When we design and build something functional, it is always beautiful." Ugo Zagato signed his work with justifiable pride. His "lightning Z" badge still rides on the flanks of many of the world's most exotic, desirable, successful, beautiful and fast cars. Zagato coachwork cloaked the first Formula 1 World Champions in 1950. They wore the winners' laurels in Enzo Ferrari's favorite race, the brutal and grueling Mille Miglia, where Zagato-bodied cars earned their global reputation from the very first "1000 miles" in 1927. It began in 1919 when founder Ugo Zagato applied aircraft construction techniques to the design and creation of automobile bodies. -

Bugatti, Ferrari and Dunhill Bentley Lead Christie's
For Immediate Release 10 March 2005 Contact: Matthew Paton 020 7389 2965 [email protected] BUGATTI, FERRARI AND DUNHILL BENTLEY LEAD CHRISTIE’S APRIL SALE Exceptional Motor Cars and Automobilia Tuesday, 19 April 2005 London – Christie’s International Motor Cars is pleased to announce the first London sale of 2005, which will take place on 19 April. This sale will include 22 cars from various ages of motoring, and will have examples from Ferrari, Bentley, Bugatti, Rolls-Royce and Jaguar, among others. Highlighting the sale are examples from four different eras of motoring: 1897 Panhard-Levassor 6hp Twin Cylinder Phaeton The Panhard-Levassor was the first ever luxury car, and the company dominated the luxury market until the arrival of Mercedes in 1901. In 1895, a Panhard-Levassor won the first ever motor race by driving from Paris to Bordeaux and back again. Unfortunately, few examples have survived – the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain records just 35. As a result, it is a rare occurrence to see such an example of motoring history at auction. This example, which is known as ‘William the Conqueror’, was delivered to a motor dealership in Paris in December 1897. It was discovered in the late 1970s in northern France, and was brought to the UK where it underwent a comprehensive restoration. The car carries an estimate of £100,000-150,000. 1923 Bentley 3 Litre Drophead Coupé by Park Ward This immaculate vintage Bentley was delivered new to Alfred Dunhill in December 1923. Dunhill is most famous for founding the company which carries his name, and which aimed to supply ‘everything but the motor’ in its motor accessories range. -
