Il suit Funestes vaisseaux, à la fois d’un point de vue chronologique mais aussi pour les conséquences sociales et militaires qui se jouèrent entre 1860 et 1870 et qui sont en partie liées aux événements dramatiques des années 1850. Dans Funestes vaisseaux, Akiko Shimojima et moi-même avons choisi de porter notre attention sur le contre-amiral Perry ainsi que sur quelques grands noms de personnalités japonaises, tout en brassant plus largement la situation historique et culturelle du moment. Nous avons suivi la même approche avec ce volume, considérant le contexte, mais nous concentrant sur l’illustre Saigo Takamori, l’une des figures les plus célèbres de l’Histoire japonaise. Nous avons pris grand soin de ne pas tomber dans les clichés des films hollywoodiens en n’exagérant pas la violence des événements et en n’évoquant pas une quelconque romance qui n’a jamais existé. En revanche, nous avons porté nos efforts sur l’étude des mœurs de l’époque concernée, des habitudes vestimentaires, de l’architecture et de la réalité historique. Par pure coïncidence, la chaîne télévisée NHK diffusa en 2018 la série consacrée à l’Histoire du Japon, Segodon, centrée autour de Saigo Takamori, et évoquant la rébellion du clan Satsuma. Son succès nous confirma l’intérêt grandissant du public pour cette période. Chaque fois, je m’étonne à quel point la ville japonaise où je vis, Kumamoto – comme dans bien d’autres de mes bandes dessinées consacrées à l’Histoire ou aux arts martiaux japonais – occupe une place particulière dans mes sujets d’étude, et ce récit n’en fait pas exception : les rebelles Satsuma firent un long siège du château de Kumamoto au printemps 1877, et une bataille majeure, celle de Tabaruzaka, s’y déroula pendant huit jours faisant plus de 4 000 morts et blessés chez les protagonistes. Crepuscule-Samourai-interieur_Mise en page 1 19/04/2020 15:47 Page6 Takamori Saigō (1794-1858), samouraï de Shimazu Nariakira, le daimyō de Satsuma, est le personnage central de la Révolte de Satsuma et un héros japonais dont la statue trône dans les jardins du parc d’Ueno à Tokyo. Au Japon, un éditeur m’a dit un jour : « Pourquoi la rébellion du clan Satsuma a retenu votre attention et pourquoi êtes-vous convaincu qu’elle pourrait plaire aux lecteurs occidentaux. C’est en fin de compte un combat de perdants qui connut une triste fin. » Je m’intéresse fondamentalement à l’Histoire dans sa globalité, quel que soit le pays concerné. Vivant au Japon, il est donc naturel que mon intérêt se focalise sur les grands événements qui modelèrent la vie du Japon d’aujourd’hui. La première fois que le mot Satsuma éveilla mon attention, ce fut en Écosse. Encore enfant – je devais avoir une douzaine d’années – je mangeais une drôle de petite orange qui portait le nom de Satsuma. Je me souviens que je me suis dit : « C’est un mot étrange… sat-su- ma… qu’est-ce que ça peut bien vouloir dire ? » Ma mère me dit que c’était le nom d’une région du Japon. J’ai vérifié dans un livre d’Histoire et j’y ai découvert que Satsuma était le lieu d’un conflit majeur de l’Histoire japonaise : la fin des samouraïs ! Pour un enfant qui avait grandi avec la rébellion de Luke Skywalker contre les forces de L’Empire de Star Wars, cette histoire ne pouvait qu’attirer ma curiosité. C’est en souvenir de l’enfant que j’étais et de son amour pour la bande dessinée que j’ai la joie de vous offrir aujourd’hui, l’histoire de la Rébellion du clan Satsuma en manga. C’est peut-être une histoire triste de perdants, mais c’est une histoire de perdants qui le firent avec dignité, forts d’une passion ardente comme dans les belles histoires de chevalerie ou de science-fiction. — Sean Michael Wilson, Kumamoto, Japon. During the first three decades of the twentieth century, Japanese society underwent significant changes in a short amount of time. After the intense modernizations of the late nineteenth century, the start of the twentieth century witnessed an increase in overseas militarism, turbulent domestic politics, an evolving middle class, and the expansion of roles for women to play outside the home. As such, the early decades of the twentieth century in Japan were a crucial period for the formation of modern ideas about femininity and womanhood. It also brought an end to the epoch of rule by “samurai,” “bushi” or Japanese traditional warriors that began as early as in the 12th century and lasted for about 700 years. Previous studies have overwhelmingly argued that after the Meiji Restoration of 1868, Japan started to modernize itself by learning from the West and changed its attitudes toward those neighboring countries. It supposedly abandoned its traditional friendship and reverence toward its neighbors and adopted aggressive and contemptuous attitudes. I have no intention of arguing here that the perspective of change and discontinuity in Japan’s attitudes toward its neighbors has no validity at all; Japan did adopt Western-style diplomacy toward its neighbors, paralleling the abandonment of traditional culture which had owed much to other East Asian civilizations since antiquity. In this dissertation, through examination primarily of official and private documents, I maintain that change and discontinuity cannot fully explain the Japanese policy toward its East Asian neighbors from the early seventeenth to the late nineteenth century.     Citizenship and National Identity in Early Meiji Japan, 1868-1889: A Comparative Assessment* EIKO IKEGAMI After the collapse of the long-standing Tokugawa regime (1603-1867), Japan under the Meiji emperor (1867-1912) rapidly implemented the process of modern nation-building by effectively utilizing the venerable institution of the emperor (Tenno) as its new national symbol. Following the imperial restoration, the Meiji government abolished the socio- economic and political privileges of the samurai class, namely its exclusive right to bear arms, hold office and receive hereditary stipends. By 1900, Japan had already equipped itself with a modern Constitution that defined citizens' rights and obligations, a parliamentary system, an updated judicial system, universal education, a restructured national and local bureaucracy, national standing army, private ownership of land, and a nation-wide taxation system. None of these institutions had existed prior to 1868. All of the developmental innovations listed above were instituted within little more than a quarter century after the collapse of their predecessor's political structures. Before the Meiji restoration, Japanese society had been governed exclusively by its hereditary samurai elites for two and a half centuries. It was only during the early Meiji period - a little more than two decades or so - that the concept of kokumin (usually translated as "citizen", more literally "country-person") entered the popular vocabulary for the first time in Japanese history. The complex social and political dynamics of this initial period of development for Japanese citizenship rights is the primary object of my inquiry. Japan's first modern Constitution (1889) defined the emperor as the source of supreme.sovereign power, at the same time that it codified the civic rights of "imperial subjects", including freedom of speech and religion, property rights and political participation through a parliamen- tary system.

New Leadership Although the emperor was the official head of the government, he did not rule directly. The men who had overthrown the Tokugawa Bakufu formed an oligarchy and were in charge. They created changes in Japan that promoted economic growth and industrialization. Their slogan was “Enrich the country; strengthen the military.” The leaders of the new Meiji Era were young, intelligent samurai who were eager for change. When they came to power in the Meiji government of 1868, their average age was only 30. All had academic and military skills, many had travelled to other countries or had met Westerners in Japan, and many had studied under Yoshida or Sakuma. Like Yoshida, most were originally against foreigners, but they revised their opinions when they realized the quality of Western technology and believed it could prove beneficial for Japan. They had two key goals: • to modernize Japan and make the economy grow • to renegotiate the unequal treaties To accomplish this, they realized Japan had to change politically and economically to negotiate from a position of strength. They wanted Japan to be seen as an equal partner in any treaty agreement. The challenge of the Meiji leaders was to develop a nation that would be competitive in the modern world and yet continue to be Japanese. When the call for the restoration of the imperial court first arose, it was a call to restore traditional ways.
