Asghar Ali Engineer's Concept on Women Liberation Naskah Publikasi ASGHAR ALI ENGINEER’S CONCEPT ON WOMEN LIBERATION (AN ISLAMIC RESPONSE) Hasna Safarina Rasyidah Fakultas Agama Islam, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta email: [email protected] Abstract It is something natural, when women argue their ideas to liberate their selves to be treated equally like men did. It might be self-defense from the oppression they saw, from the limitation they had because they are the object itself. But how did men see this thing? This is one reason, why this research is limited on Asghar Ali Engineer (India, 1939-now) as one of male feminists who is also reformist thinker of the contemporary Muslim world. He paid his great attention to the question of women liberation such as: equality, marital rights, concept of jilbab, and women as head of state while some answers are afforded to solve those problems above, based on the interpretation of Qur’an taken from Tafsir al Mishbah written by M. Quraish Shihab (Indonesia, 1944-now), which is a representative interpretation to see women liberation from the sight of Islam for it was written in the same era as the thought of women liberation raised. As a qualitative study, this research is based on a pure library research which the collected data is described, and afterwards analyzed and criticized by Islamic framework. Interpretation of Qur’an should pass the right methodology before using ratio and reason, because it was the only way to gain the right concept of every sphere in life. Until recently our knowledge of them has not matched their numbers. Indeed, they, and here I refer to the Twelver Shi‘as rather than the Isma‘ilis, have suffered from the paradox of being both highly visible but in scholarly terms largely invisible. Where the Shi‘a live in South Asian towns and cities, arguably, no community has been more visible or more audible: visible because of their great processions at Muharram; and audible, certainly at Muharram, but also throughout the year in their majalis, as they recount the events of Karbala, often transmitting them by loudspeaker to the muhalla. Up to the 1980s these significant religious communities had attracted just two major works of scholarship: Hollister’s, The Shi‘a of India (1936) and Engineer’s The Bohras (1980).1 This dearth of scholarship began to change in the mid-1980s. First there was S. A. A.     YOGINDER SIKAND ASGHAR ‘ALI ENGINEER’S QUEST FOR A CONTEXTUAL ISLAMIC THEOLOGY In coming to terms with the challenges of the modern world, Muslims have had to deal with their own religious traditions to develop responses to what are seen as novel circumstances. Issues such as secularism, democracy, human rights, gen- der parity, religious pluralism and the nation state, and the relation between each of these and the broader Islamic tradition have been hotly debated and various dif- ferent understandings have emerged. Recent years have witnessed the emergence of a breed of what Farish A. Noor calls “new Muslim intellectuals,” distinct from the traditional ‘ulama and the Islamists, on the one hand, and secular Muslims, on the other, who, while rooted in their own traditions, seek to develop visions of Is- lam that take the questions posed by modernity seriously. They are, Noor remarks, often branded as “heretics” and “outsiders’ in their own societies and as apologists for Islam in the West, straddling the seemingly “precarious border between different worlds” (Noor 2002: 1). One such scholar is the well-known Indian Muslim writer-activist, Asghar ‘Ali Engineer. Engineer’s principal concern is to evolve a theology of Islam that seeks to grapple with while at the same time being firmly rooted in the modern condi- tion. Engineer’s main contribution is the articulation of a contextual hermeneutics of the Qur’an, one that, he believes, can help guide Muslims in dealing with the challenges of contemporary life. Peacock and Dr. Lauren G. Leve) Based on thirteen months of intensive fieldwork at two primary sites in India, this dissertation describes how adherents of shrine-based Sufism assert their identity as Indian Muslims in the contexts of public debates over religion and belonging in India, and of reformist critiques of their Islamic beliefs and practices. Faced with opposition to their mode of Islam from reformist Muslim groups, and the challenges to their sense of national identity as members of a religious minority in India, I argue that adherents of shrine-based Sufism claim the sacred space of the Sufi shrine as a venue where both the core values of Islam and of India are given form and reproduced. For these adherents, contemporary shrine-based Sufism is a dynamic and creative force that manifests essential aspects of Islam that are also fundamental Indian values, and which are critical to the health of the nation today. The dissertation reveals that contested identities and internal religious debates can only be understood and interpreted within the broader framework of national and global debates over Islam and over the place of Islam in the Indian polity that shape them.
