I hope it will provide readers with some context to learn more about a complex, evolving, and, most of all, Tfascinating topic, especially for lovers of baseball on both sides of the Pacific. Baseball, although seriously challenged by the popularity of other sports, has traditionally been considered America’s pastime and was for a long time the nation’s most popular sport. The game is an original American sport, but has sunk deep roots into other regions, including Latin America and East Asia. Baseball was introduced to Japan in the late nineteenth century and became the national sport there during the early post-World War II period. The game as it is played and organized in both countries, however, is considerably different. The basic rules are mostly the same, but cultural differences between Americans and Japanese are clearly reflected in how both nations approach their versions of baseball. Although players from both countries have flourished in both American and Japanese leagues, at times the cultural differences are substantial, and some attempts to bridge the gaps have ended in failure. Still, while doubtful the Japanese version has changed the American game, there is some evidence that the American version has exerted some changes in the Japanese game.

More than 110,000 people were forced to leave their homes, two-thirds of them U.S. Citizens. They lost their property, their businesses, their communities. Although they were loyal Americans, they were considered dangerous anyway, possible spies for Japan. Kenichi Zenimura and his family were sent to Gila River, Arizona. Zeni may have started his baseball career on a Japanese-only team in Fresno because the regular white teams wouldn’t allow him to play, but he ended up playing with Yankee greats like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig for exhibition games.

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE Baseball as a Framework for the Study of American History, Culture & Language Baseball as a Framework for the Study of American History, Culture & Language Kevin Miller Tsurumi University is known for its strong baseball program, with students coming from all over Japan to study at Tsurumi University while playing on the school baseball team. In the 2014 school year, there were 89 undergraduate students who were members of the baseball team, of which 42 were from the English Department. With student enrollment always a concern, it is likely that the recruitment office at Tsurumi University will continue to reach out to high school baseball players looking to continue playing their favorite sport as they pursue higher education. It makes sense, then, to offer courses that will appeal to baseball players that simultaneously further the goals of English education, such as an ESL course that links baseball to American history and culture. Designing such a course, however, must take into account various English proficiency levels, including levels that are near beginner level. Simply lecturing about baseball, history and culture in English would certainly not succeed, and doing so in Japanese would be unlikely to further the goals of English language education. However, a CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) course in English about baseball and culture that features active learning and cooperative learning methods can succeed in furthering the aims of - 111 - language learning and cultural understanding while serving as a potent recruitment tool. To those who are skeptical of the worthiness of baseball as an academic subject, it may be pointed out that the idea of a course on baseball and how it relates to American history, culture and other disciplines is not a new concept.

Gila River Concentration Camp and the Historical Memory of Japanese American Mass Incarceration Masumi Izumi* IntroductIon On July 20, 1942, a concentration camp was opened in Rivers, Arizona, to incarcerate Japanese Americans removed from the West Coast. The camp, officially named the Gila River War Relocation Center, stood on the Gila River Indian Community reservation, the land originally inhabited by the Akmel O’odham and the Pee Posh peoples.1 The Gila River Indian Council, the caretakers of the land, had not approved of the establishment of a prison camp on their territory. It was the white administrators of two federal agencies, the Office of Indian Affairs and the War Relocation Authority (WRA), who decided on the construction of the camp on the reservation to utilize the impounded population for the “improvement” of the land.2 The Gila River War Relocation Center was one of two wartime incarceration camps for Japanese Americans constructed in Arizona.3 Gila River was located approximately forty-five miles south of Phoenix in the Sonoran Desert.4 The other camp, the Colorado River War Relocation Center, commonly called Poston, was built in northern Arizona, also on an indigenous reservation. Poston housed the largest detainee population of over 17,000, while Gila River housed 13,348 at its peak.
