Term One 2020 Book Catalogue Primary Program

Growing up, I was what people called a reluctant reader. It wasn’t that I couldn’t read, it just seemed a lot of work to read all the words Hey, guys! in a regular book, and I found graphic novels easier to get through. I Rhys Darby here, consumed the entire Tintin series by Herge. I remember being so sad

the comedian and actor when I finished the last book. I also enjoyed the humour of the Asterix books and British comics like . guy from the telly It’s strange how many of the movies and television shows I appeared and big screen! in happened to be adapted from children’s books and comics… films such as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (the original Jumanji was a children’s picture book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg), which is about a magical board game that comes alive. Another one is Lemony Snickett’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, which is about the trials and tribulations of three siblings who are orphaned when their parents die in a fire and who are pursued by a dastardly villain called Count Olaf who is after their fortune. I was also the voice actor for a character called Hypno-Potamus in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. Betcha didn’t know that the Ninja Turtles first came out as a comic book created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1984. Anyway, when one of my sons turned out to be a reluctant reader like me (preferring to make up the stories himself or read comic books), I was inspired to write and illustrate a book for him. Last year, I was hugely excited with the release of my first Buttons McGinty book… The Top-Secret Undercover Notes of Buttons McGinty, which is the notebook of a 12-year-old boy on an epic adventure. It’s full of funny drawings (by me), maps, lists and diagrams, and of course my signature humour, so there’s no time to get bored. In the New Zealand army, when I worked as a signaller, I learned Morse Code. In Buttons McGinty’s -journalling adventures, I finally found a use for it! Throughout these books, the reader has to decode messages. My son loved the book, as have thousands of other kids, both reluctant and enthusiastic readers. Hopefully you’ll love the adventure too! Imanpa School

NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 14 LOCATION: 270km from Alice Springs, NT ABOUT US: Imanpa School is a small, remote, community school located 270km southwest of Alice Springs, half-way to Uluru. The local people’s language group is Pitjantjatjara, with Luritja, and Yankunyjatjara also spoken. The two-teacher school caters for students from Preschool to Year 6 with 14 students currently enrolled. The community values the teaching and learning of English. The local store mainly stocks food provisions and does not have the selection of enticing picture books found in urban shopping centres. Without Books in Homes our school would not have access to the latest books other children across Australia do. Books in Homes books are read daily during one-to-one reading sessions with our READ tutor volunteers, are joyfully taken home to students’ houses to share with family, and given as prizes to students. Imanpa Primary School students love exploring the pictures and text in the Books in Homes books. Thank you, Books in Homes. Thank you also to Wendy Fitzgerald—we are extremely grateful for your kind generosity in sponsoring Imanpa School! Term One 2020 Book Order Form Full Name Class
