It is steeped in all the things I love. From the adventure stories of H. Rider Haggard, Jules Verne and Arthur Conan Doyle I took the long build-up to a fantastic element, made all the more amazing because the characters are immersed in the ‘real world’ for so much of the story. From the comics medium I dipped my pen into the European tradition of Hergé, Edgar P. Jacobs, Yves Chaland and the descendents of their ligne claire legacy, along with the strong sense of environment – a believable world – from Asterix and Tintin. Yet I wanted characters and a setting that were very strongly British, without being patriotic. Mixed into all this is my fondness for an involving and compelling plot, and artistic influences absorbed from a wealth of comic artists and illustrators, from Kay Neilsen to Bryan Talbot, and a simple love of history and adventure. No zombies, no bikini-clad gun-toting nubiles, and no teeth-gritting ... grittiness. Just a huge slice of pure adventure, made to go with a big mug of tea.

www.internationalgraphicnovelandcomicsconference.com [email protected] #IGNCC18 @TheIGNCC RETRO! TIME, MEMORY, NOSTALGIA THE NINTH INTERNATIONAL GRAPHIC NOVEL AND COMICS CONFERENCE WEDNESDAY 27TH – FRIDAY 29TH JUNE 2018 BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY, UK Retro – a looking to the past – is everywhere in contemporary culture. Cultural critics like Jameson argue that retro and nostalgia are symptoms of postmodernism – that we can pick and choose various items and cultural phenomena from different eras and place them together in a pastiche that means little and decontextualizes their historicity. However, as Bergson argues in Memory and Matter, the senses evoke memories, and popular culture artefacts like comics can bring the past to life in many ways. The smell and feel of old paper can trigger memories just as easily as revisiting an old haunt or hearing a piece of music from one’s youth. As fans and academics we often look to the past to tell us about the present. We may argue about the supposed ‘golden age’ of comics. Our collecting habits may even define our lifestyles and who we are. But nostalgia has its dark side and some regard this continuous looking to the past as a negative emotion in which we aim to restore a lost adolescence. In Mediated Nostalgia, Ryan Lizardi argues that the contemporary media fosters narcissistic nostalgia ‘to develop individualized pasts that are defined by idealized versions of beloved lost media texts’ (2). This argument suggests that fans are media dupes lost in a reverie of nostalgic melancholia; but is belied by the diverse responses of fandom to media texts. Moreover, ‘retro’ can be taken to imply an ironic appropriation.

CAPITALIZING ON TABOOS IN ADVERTISING: THE CIGARETTE CARD SERIES OF W. DUKE, SONS & COMPANY by Janet Katelyn Hammond Honors Thesis Appalachian State University Submitted to the Department of History and The Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science May, 2018 Approved by: Michael C. Behrent, Ph.D., Departmental Honors Director Jefford Vahlbusch, Ph.D., Dean, The Honors College Hammond 1 Abstract This essay reveals the themes displayed in the cigarette card series produced at W. Duke, Sons & Co. from 1880 to 1900. The following mainly draws upon the cards themselves, the Duke family’s and the business’s correspondence, and other miscellaneous company notes. Topics covered include: a historiography, a family history, an overview of the cigarette and tobacco industries, late-eighteenth century capitalism and advertising methods, the interworking of the Duke company, and how the cigarette card series reflect all of these components. The overall argument is that the executives of this enterprise cashed in on the taboos of this time period while offering no new perspectives about the existing social hierarchy in the United States. • Effect of Taxes and Government Laws on Cigarette Industry in India
International Journal of Progressive Sciences and Technologies (IJPSAT) ISSN: 2509-0119 Vol. 3 No. 1 June 2016, pp. 66-75 © 2016 International Journals of Sciences and High Technologies http://ijpsat.ijsht-journals.org Effect of Taxes and Government Laws on Cigarette Industry in India Nikhil Patidar 1, Sachet Jain 2 1 Biochemical and Biotechnology, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India 2Textile Technology, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India ABSTRACT : Taxes and Government Laws in any economy play a huge role on the cigarette industry worldwide and hence this paper is an attempt to analyze the effects of the government policies and literacy rates on the cigarette industry in India. Trend of the industry over the past fifteen years is analyzed and the effect of government policies of 2003, 2008 and 2013 is studied using the benchmark analysis via comparison with industrial average. DuPont 5 point ratios are being used to compare the companies with the market trends. Also Regression analysis has been performed to comprehend the relative impact of all the five DuPont ratios on return on equity. The study shows that the policies of 2008 and 2013 has helped the government of India to generate more revenue, resulting in the rise in cigarette prices and hence reduced relative consumption. The policies of 2003 resulted in reduced shareholder’s equity and as the tax increased in the next decade the tax burden ratio also decreased in 2008 and 2013. The study also shows that the operating profit ratio has decreased as the profit to the company has reduced in comparison to the sales made.

  • Era of the Cigarette Card”
In 1945 Esquire Magazine Reported on the “Era of the Cigarette Card” by George G. Vrechek Early articles about the trading card hobby started to appear in a few publications in the mid-1930s. Articles were written by Jefferson Burdick for Hobbies magazine or for his own small publication, The Card Collector’s Bulletin. Hobbies had a significant circulation and published over 100 pages each month, but the Burdick articles were brief and seldom illustrated. A 1929 The New Yorker magazine article, A New York Childhood, Cigarette Pictures, by Arthur H. Folwell, was a rare blip as to mainstream publicity about card collecting. In a January 6, 2006, SCD article I covered Folwell‟s piece which was based on his personal experience in collecting cards during the 1880s. It was a nice bit of nostalgia but didn‟t bring readers up to date as to any 1929 collecting activity. Esquire Magazine December 1945 I had heard of another card article that appeared in Esquire magazine in December 1945. Esquire preceded Playboy as a publication targeting the male audience. Hugh Hefner worked as a copywriter for Esquire before leaving in 1952 to establish Playboy. Esquires from this era contained pin-ups by Alberto Vargas and are collectible because of his artwork. The issue I finally managed to come up with was intact, except for the Vargas girl. There were some marginally naughty cartoons and a few young starlets in two piece swim suits interspersed among 328 pages of articles and ads. Esquire writers included Sinclair Lewis and dozens of other notables including one Karl Baarslag, the author of the cigarette card article of my interest.

  • Validity of Smokers' Information About Present and Past Cigarette Brands Implications for Studies of the Effects of Falling Tar Yields of Cigarettes on Health
Thorax 1986;41:203-207 Thorax: first published as 10.1136/thx.41.3.203 on 1 March 1986. Downloaded from Validity of smokers' information about present and past cigarette brands implications for studies of the effects of falling tar yields of cigarettes on health HEDLEY PEACH, D SHAH, RW MORRIS From the Department ofCommunity Medicine, United Medical and Dental Schools ofGuy's and St Thomas's Hospitals, London ABSTRACT Four hundred and twenty nine current smokers and ex-smokers who had provided details 12 years previously completed a self administered questionnaire about their present and past smoking habits, and two weeks later current smokers supplied an empty cigarette packet. The tar group and brand name of the current cigarette given on the questionnaire were compared with details on the packet, and the brand alleged to have been smoked 12 years ago was compared with that actually recorded at that time.
