Japanska Serier Och Skaparglädje/Manga! Malmö Högskola Lärarutbildningen Manga! Japanska serier och skaparglädje Manga! – Japanese Comics and the joy of creating Fredrik Strömberg Magisterexamen - poäng Examinator: Lisbeth Lundgren Torstensson Slutseminarium: -- Handledare: Sven Persson 1 Abstract This is a study of why Japanese comics, so-called manga, in such a high degree make Swedish readers eager to write and draw comics themselves, and what didactic implications this might have for teachers working in Sweden. To answer this, the author has put together a focus group of Swedish artists infl uenced by manga, and also used a questionnaire at two Swedish art schools, where young artists are taught how to draw in a manga style. The results show that it is the compelling storytelling and the focus on the characters that enthral readers about Japanese comics, but that it is the seemingly simple style that makes the readers think they themselves can master it. The fact that the interest in both reading and creating manga, almost completely overlap with the so-called period of oppression (between the ages of and ) when most students lose interest in creating art, is something that could and should be used in the Swedish educational system. Commissioned by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs Manga, Animation, Games, and Media Art Information Bureau Japanese Animation Guide: The History of Robot Anime Compiled by Mori Building Co., Ltd. 2013 Commissioned by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs Manga, Animation, Games, and Media Art Information Bureau Japanese Animation Guide: The History of Robot Anime Compiled by Mori Building Co., Ltd. 2013 Addition to the Release of this Report This report on robot anime was prepared based on information available through 2012, and at that time, with the exception of a handful of long-running series (Gundam, Macross, Evangelion, etc.) and some kiddie fare, no original new robot anime shows debuted at all. But as of today that situation has changed, and so I feel the need to add two points to this document. At the start of the anime season in April of 2013, three all-new robot anime series debuted. These were Production I.G.'s “Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet," Sunrise's “Valvrave the Liberator," and Dogakobo and Orange's “Majestic Prince of the Galactic Fleet." Each was broadcast in a late-night timeslot and succeeded in building fanbases. The second new development is the debut of the director Guillermo Del Toro's film “Pacific Rim," which was released in Japan on August 9, 2013. The plot involves humanity using giant robots controlled by human pilots to defend Earth’s cities from gigantic “kaiju.” At the end of the credits, the director dedicates the film to the memory of “monster masters” Ishiro Honda (who oversaw many of the “Godzilla” films) and Ray Harryhausen (who pioneered stop-motion animation techniques.) The film clearly took a great deal of inspiration from Japanese robot anime shows.

  • The Function of Manga to Shape and Reflect Japanese Identity
ISSN: 1500-0713 ______________________________________________________________ Article Title: From Samurai to Manga: The Function of Manga to Shape and Reflect Japanese Identity Author(s): Maria Rankin-Brown and Morris Brown, Jr. Source: Japanese Studies Review, Vol. XVI (2012), pp. 75 - 92 Stable URL: https://asian.fiu.edu/projects-and-grants/japan-studies- review/journal-archive/volume-xvi-2012/rankin-brown-manga- research.pdf ______________________________________________________________ FROM SAMURAI TO MANGA: THE FUNCTION OF MANGA TO SHAPE AND REFLECT JAPANESE IDENTITY Maria Rankin-Brown Pacific Union College Morris Brown, Jr. California State University, Chico Literature has various functions: to instruct, to entertain, to subvert, to inspire, to express creativity, to find commonality, to heal, to isolate, to exclude, and even to reflect and shape identity. The genre of manga – Japanese comics – has served many of these functions in Japanese society. Moreover, “Manga also depicts other social phenomena, such as social order and hierarchy, sexism, racism, ageism, classism, and so on.”1 Anyone familiar with Bleach, Dragonball Z, Inuyasha, Full Metal Alchemist, Pokémon, or Sailor Moon, can attest to manga’s worldwide appeal and its ability to reflect societal values. The $4.2 billion manga industry, which comprises nearly one quarter of Japan’s printed material, cannot be ignored.2 While comics in the West have been regarded, for many years, as light-hearted entertainment (Archie comics), or for political commentary (the Doonesbury series) the manga industry in Japan grew to encompass genres beyond what the West offers. These include: action, adventure, comedy, crime, detective, fantasy, harem, historical, horror, magic, martial arts, medical, mystery, occult, pachinko (gambling), romance, science fiction, supernatural, and suspense series, reaching a wider audience than that of Western comics.

The aim of this course is to introduce students and to expose students to as much of the history and breadth of manga as possible. The breadth and scope of manga is limitless, as every imaginable genre exists. With over 10,000 manga being published every year (roughly one third of all published material in Japan), there is no way that one course can cover the complete history of manga, but we will cover as much as possible. We will read a number of manga together as a class and discuss them.

Costellazione Manga: Explaining Astronomy Using Japanese Comics and Animation Resources Daria Dall’Olio Piero Ranalli Keywords Onsala Space Observatory, Chalmers Combient AB, Göteborg, Sweden; Public outreach, science communication, University of Technology, Sweden; Lund Observatory, Sweden informal education, planetarium show, ARAR, Planetarium of Ravenna and ASCIG, Italy [email protected] learning development [email protected] Comics and animation are intensely engaging and can be successfully used to communicate science to the public. They appear to stimulate many aspects of the learning process and can help with the development of links between ideas. Given these pedagogical premises, we conducted a project called Costellazione Manga, in which we considered astronomical concepts present in several manga and anime (Japanese comics and animations) and highlighted the physics behind them. These references to astronomy allowed us to introduce interesting topics of modern astrophysics and communicate astronomy-related concepts to a large spectrum of people. In this paper, we describe the methodology and techniques that we developed and discuss the results of our project. Depending on the comic or anime considered, we can introduce general topics such as the difference between stars, planets and galaxies or ideas such as the possibility of finding life on other planets, the latest discoveries of Earth-like planets orbiting other stars or the detection of complex organic molecules in the interstellar space. When presenting the night sky and the shapes of constellations, we can also describe how the same stars are perceived and grouped by different cultures. The project outcomes indicate that Costellazione Manga is a powerful tool to popularise astronomy and stimulate important aspects of learning development, such as curiosity and crit- ical thinking.
