  • Morphological Studies on Seeds of Scrophulariaceae S.L. and Their Systematic Significance
Chapter 11 Morphological Studies on Seeds of Scrophulariaceae s.l. and Their Systematic Significance Balkrishna Ghimire, Go Eun Choi, Hayan Lee, Kweon Heo and Mi Jin Jeong Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.70572 Abstract This study employed scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy to observe seed surface micromorphology and seed coat anatomy in the Scrophulariaceae s.l. to investigate seed characters of taxonomic importance. Seeds of 41 taxa corresponding to 13 genera of the family were carefully investigated. Seeds were minute and less than or slightly larger than 1 millimeter in length except for Melampyrum and Pedicularis species. The seed shape ranged from elliptical to broad elliptical and ovoid. In the studied species the surface sculpture was predominantly reticulate-striate, regular reticulate, sometimes colliculate, and rugose, or - rarely - ribbed, as in Lindernia procumbens and Paulownia coreana. Seed coats comprised the epidermis and the endothelium. Neverthe- less, in all Melampyrum and some Veronica species the seed coat was very poorly represented and only formed by a papery layer of epidermis. According to correspon- dence analysis (CA) and unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) based cluster analysis the close affinities among the species of Scrophularia were well supported by their proximity to one another. Similarly, the proximity of Melampyrum species and Pedicularis species cannot be denied. In contrast, Veronica spe- cies were divided into two groups in CA plots and even three in the UPGMA tree. Regardless of the limited range taxa considered we found that similarities and differ- ences in seed morphology between different genera could help us to understand the systematic relationships involved.

The Herb Society of America's Essential Guide to Savory 2015 Herb of the Year 1 Introduction As with previous publications of The Herb Society of America's Essential Guides we have developed The Herb Society of America's Essential The Herb Society Guide to Savory in order to promote the knowledge, of America is use, and delight of herbs - the Society's mission. We hope that this guide will be a starting point for studies dedicated to the of savory and that you will develop an understanding and appreciation of what we, the editors, deem to be an knowledge, use underutilized herb in our modern times. and delight of In starting to put this guide together we first had to ask ourselves what it would cover. Unlike dill, herbs through horseradish, or rosemary, savory is not one distinct species. It is a general term that covers mainly the educational genus Satureja, but as time and botanists have fractured the many plants that have been called programs, savories, the title now refers to multiple genera. As research and some of the most important savories still belong to the genus Satureja our main focus will be on those plants, sharing the but we will also include some of their close cousins. The more the merrier! experience of its Savories are very historical plants and have long been utilized in their native regions of southern members with the Europe, western Asia, and parts of North America. It community. is our hope that all members of The Herb Society of America who don't already grow and use savories will grow at least one of them in the year 2015 and try cooking with it.

  • Taxonomic Overview of the Mexican Species of Salvia Sect. Flocculosae (Lamiaceae)
Turner, B.L. 2013. Taxonomic overview of the Mexican species of Salvia sect. Flocculosae (Lamiaceae). Phytoneuron 36: 1– 11. Published 27 May 2013. ISSN 2153 733X TAXONOMIC OVERVIEW OF THE MEXICAN SPECIES OF SALVIA SECT. FLOCCULOSAE (LAMIACEAE) BILLIE L. TURNER Plant Resources Center The University of Texas Austin, Texas 78712 ABSTRACT Epling (1939) delimited Salvia sect. Flocculosae as largely a Mexican taxon composed of 19 species, 10 confined to Mexico and closely adjacent USA. Two additional taxa, Salvia venturana B.L. Turner, sp. nov. , from Puebla, and S. jessicae B.L. Turner, sp. nov. , from Coahuila, are added to the complex in the present account, the latter a well-marked gypsophile. Salvia chamaedryoides var. isochroma is treated here at specific rank as Salvia isochroma (Fern.) B.L. Turner, comb. et stat. nov. Photographs of the newly ordained types are provided, along with maps showing the distribution of the Mexican species of the complex. KEY WORDS : Lamiaceae, Salvia sect. Flocculosae , gypsophily, Mexico In Epling’s account (1939), Salvia sect. Flocculosae (Epling) Epling accommodated 18 taxa, 10 from Mexico, 2 from the Dominican Republic, and 5 from South America (including the type species of the section), all having the attributes in the description below. Most noteworthy are those taxa possessing floccose (tufted or branched) hairs, which gives the section its name. The present paper considers only the Mexican species and adds 3 species, two newly described and one raised from varietal rank. Perennial, suffruticose herbs or shrublets, 20–80 cm high. Stems pubescent with branched hairs or not. Leaf blades ovate to deltoid-elliptic, 6–30 mm long, 4–10 mm wide.

However, a detailed analysis of their biological properties and their associated active compounds is needed to justify their therapeutic use in modern medicine. The aim of the study was to identify and quantify the phenolics present in hydromethanolic extracts of the roots and shoots of the Chinese Salvia species, Salvia bulleyana. The qualitative and quantitative analyses were carried out by ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry detection (UHPLC-PDA-ESI-MS), and high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array (HPLC-PDA) detection. The extracts of S. bulleyana were also screened for their antioxidant activity using ferric ion (Fe3+) reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), diammonium 2,20-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) cation (ABTS), superoxide radical anion (O ), and inhibition of lipid peroxidation assays.

  • Alkali Milk-Vetch)
Glenn Counties (California Natural Diversity Data Base 2001 and unprocessed data). Five occurrences are afforded some protection by virtue of their location on public land, but no particular conservation efforts have been undertaken in those areas. 2. ASTRAGALUS TENER VAR. TENER (ALKALI MILK-VETCH) a. Description and Taxonomy Taxonomy.—Alkali milk-vetch is in the pea family Fabaceae. Gray (1864) named Astragalus tener, commonly known as alkali milk-vetch. He gave the type locality only as “California ... from near Monterey or San Francisco” (Gray 1864:206). No varieties were named until Barneby (1950) reduced Astragalus titi, commonly known as coastal dunes milk-vetch, from a full species to the variety Astragalus tener var. titi. In so doing, the combination Astragalus tener var. tener was created automatically to represent Gray’s original material (i.e., alkali milk-vetch), according to accepted rules of botanical nomenclature. Another common name by which this variety is known is slender rattle-weed (Abrams 1944). Description and Identification.—Astragalus tener var. tener (Figure II-22) is similar in most respects to A. tener var. ferrisiae. However, the two taxa differ in leaflet shape and fruit morphology. Astragalus tener var. tener leaflets vary, even on the same plant, from narrow and pointed to wedge-shaped with blunt or notched tips. In A. tener var. tener, the pod is only 1 to 2.5 centimeters (0.4 to 1.0 inch) long and straight or only slightly curved. The base of the pod is typically rounded; if stalk-like, the base is much less than 3 millimeters (0.12 inch) long.
