After leading the Golden Eagles to a record-setting season in 2009, Chris Chamides returns for his eighth year as the head coach of the women’s soccer program at Cal State L.A. Chamides led Cal State L.A. to a 17-3-2 overall record in 2009 and to its first California Collegiate Athletic Association championship. The Golden Eagles won the CCAA South Division and then posted shutout wins over Chico State and Cal State Dominguez Hills in the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament to claim the conference crown. The Golden Eagles earned the No. 1 seed in the West Region and hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time ever. Chamides was named the CCAA Coach of the Year in both women’s soccer and men’s soccer in 2009. The Golden Eagle women set new program records for wins (17) and goals scored (53) and achieved their highest-ever national ranking (No. 6) during the historic season. They also tied a program record for most shutouts in a season with 12. In his first seven years at Cal State L.A., Chamides has turned around a program that had not produced a winning record before his arrival. He led the Golden Eagles to their first-ever NCAA Division II playoff appearance in 2007 and, Chris Chamides after guiding Cal State L.A. through a challenging 2008 campaign that was marked by a number of pre-season injuries to key players, Chamides directed the Golden Head Coach Eagles to their best-ever season in 2009. Liz Franco and Amanda Matthews became the first Cal State L.A. women’s Chamides Quick Facts soccer players to earn All-America honors in 2009 and Franco was the first to be named the West Region Player of the Year. Franco was also the CCAA Offensive Player of the Year and Matthews was the CCAA Defensive Player of the Year, Overall Record both becoming the first Golden Eagles to win those awards. Cal State L.A. had six players earn All-CCAA honors in 2009, which tied the program record first set in 2007, and 68-55-15 (7 Seasons) four earn All-West Regions, which is a new program record. CCAA Coach of the Year Chamides has built a program that now owns a 64-41-15 overall record over the past six seasons and has 1 (2009) become recognized as one of the nation’s best. Cal State L.A. has earned 29 All-CCAA and 10 All-Region awards during CCAA Tournament Appearances Chamides’ tenure. The Golden Eagles also had a player earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in 2009, defender Reauna Wong, the first in the program’s history. 2 (2007, 2009) The 2009 excellence came with a young roster that was picked to finish fifth in the six-team CCAA South Division NCAA Tournament Appearances by the conference coaches. 2 (2007, 2009) Chamides led the Golden Eagles to a strong finish in 2008 that carried over into the 2009 campaign. Although CCAA Tournament Championships the Golden Eagles finished with a 7-9-3 overall record, they were 5-1-2 in their last eight California Collegiate Athletic Association matches and wound up with a 6-6-2 conference mark. That marked the third consecutive year and the fourth 1 (2009) time in five years that Cal State L.A. had finished with a .500 record or better in conference play. CCAA Division Championships Chamides led Cal State L.A. to a memorable 2007 season that included the Golden Eagles’ first-ever trip to 1 (2009) the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament and their first-ever NCAA Division II playoff appearance. Cal State L.A. knocked off perennial power UC San Diego to reach the championship game in the CCAA tourney and then advanced Players Under Chamides past Chico State and Seattle University to the West Region championship game. The Golden Eagles were ranked 15th in the nation at the end of the season. It marked the first time in the All-Americans: 2 program’s history that Cal State L.A. was nationally ranked. In addition, Cal State L.A. had three players earn All-Region Region Player of the Year: 1 honors and six players earn All-Conference awards. All-Region: 10 Cal State L.A. flourished defensively and posted a new single-season record 12 shutouts. Academic All-District: 1 The 2007 success came on the heels of an impressive 2006 season when the Golden Eagles, despite having a young team without a single senior, compiled a 9-7-3 overall record. An upset of No. 2-ranked Seattle Pacific, 2-0, in the CCAA Player of the Year: 2 Seawolf Classic at Sonoma State was a highlight of the season. CCAA Newcomer of the Year: 1 In 2005, Chamides guided the Golden Eagles to a 9-8-1 overall record, while in 2004, he led the Golden Eagles CCAA Freshman of the Year: 2 to the program’s first-ever winning season after nine straight losing years. Cal State L.A. recorded a 9-8-2 record, which All-CCAA: 29 represented a huge jump for the program. The Golden Eagles had not won more than seven games in a season before that and had won five games or less for six straight years. Chamides also served as an assistant coach for Chivas USA of for four seasons. In 2006, he worked under MLS Coach of the Year and current U.S. National Team head coach and he also worked for three years with former Chivas USA Head Coach . In his time with Chivas USA, the roster included Claudio Suarez, Ramon Ramirez, Paco Palencia and . Chivas USA reached the MLS playoffs in just its second season of existence in 2006 and Bornstein was named the 2006 MLS Rookie of the Year. Chamides came to Cal State L.A. from the of the Major League Soccer, where he served as the Senior Director of Soccer from 2000-02. While in the role, Chamides was directly involved in all soccer-related facets, including roster development. He helped build a San Jose squad that won the 2001 MLS Cup one year after having the league’s worst record. The roster included USA National Team members and . From 1997-99, Chamides was the head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla. The Flagler women’s team improved from 2-15 before his arrival to 12-7 in 1998. The men’s squad was ranked as high as 17th in the country and four Flagler players earned All-America honors during his tenure. During that time span, Chamides was also a coach in the Florida Olympic Development Program and was hired as the head coach in 1999 of the USL’s expansion Jacksonville Jade. In 1995, Chamides got his first collegiate coaching job when he was hired as an assistant for the University of Massachusetts’ women’s soccer program. During his two years in Amherst, Massachusetts was ranked as high as No. 6 in the country, won two Atlantic-10 Conference titles, made two consecutive “Sweet 16” appearances in the NCAA Division I playoffs and compiled a 30-9-3 record. His first head coaching job came in 1993 when he worked with both the junior varsity and varsity boys soccer teams at his alma mater, Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. That same year, he was also tabbed by then-Virginia head coach and former USA National Team coach to serve as a staff coach at the ’s summer soccer camps. In 1994, he also revived the S.C. Gjoa U-16 boys club team in Brooklyn, leading the squad to the State Cup. Chamides played in college for NCAA Division I Lafayette from 1989-92 and helped the Leopards to a Patriot League runner-up finish in 1990. He was a team captain as a senior. Lafayette posted a winning record in each of his four seasons and had an overall mark of 43-32-5. He owns an “A” license from the U.S. Soccer Federation and has an Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Chamides earned a Masters of Science degree in Sports Management from the University of Massachusetts. Chamides and his wife, Nancy, were married during the summer of 2005 and celebrated the birth of their son, Ryan, in July of 2008.

A former Cal State L.A. assistant coach with experience in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Michael Jacobson returns for his fourth season in his second stint with the Golden Eagles. He is the assistant coach for the men’s and women’s soccer teams. Jacobson rejoined the Golden Eagle program prior to the 2007 season. In Jacobson’s first three seasons since his return to Cal State L.A., the Golden Eagle men are 42-15-9 overall, while the Golden Eagle women are 37-18-9. Jacobson helped the Golden Eagles to a tremendously successful 2009 season. Cal State L.A.’s men’s team was 18-4-1 overall and reached the NCAA Division II West Region championship match for the second straight season and for the third time in the past four years. The Golden Eagles earned their first-ever No. 1 national ranking and received the No. 1 seed in the NCAA West Region. The 18 wins were the second-most in the program’s history and the most since 1981. Cal State L.A. also captured the CCAA South Division and advanced to the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament for a fourth straight year. The women’s team enjoyed a historic season and won its first-ever CCAA Michael Jacobson Championship. The Golden Eagles set new program records for wins (17) and goals scored (53) and also achieved their highest-ever national ranking (No. 6) during the Assistant Coach season. Cal State L.A. claimed the No. 1 seed in the West Region and hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA playoffs. Jacobson also helped the Golden Eagles achieve great success in 2008. Cal State L.A.’s men’s team reached the NCAA Division II playoffs for the second time in three years and advanced to the West Region championship game. The Golden Eagles also qualified for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament for a third straight year and concluded the season with a national ranking of 14. The women’s team battled through a string of pre-season injuries and a slow start to finish with a 5-1-2 record over its last eight conference matches. Cal State L.A. finished with a 6-6-2 mark in the CCAA, its third straight year of .500 or better. The Golden Eagles reached unprecedented heights with Jacobson’s assistance in 2007. Cal State L.A. reached the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time in the program’s history and also qualified for the CCAA Championship Tournament for the first time. The Golden Eagle women posted a 13-6-4 record and earned a final national ranking of 15. The men’s team also reached the CCAA Championship Tournament and finished the season with an 11-6-4 record. Jacobson came to Cal State L.A. after a successful run as the Assistant Director of Coaching for South Bay Soccer Club. He was the head coach for various age group teams between the ages of 9-19. With the emphasis on development at the youth level, Jacobson oversaw coaches and players. He also helped guide numerous players to compete in as well as gave opportunities for placement on Olympic Development teams and participation on age-level U.S. National teams. He has coached numerous players who are currently playing at the professional level who came out of the South Bay Soccer Club. Jacobson was introduced to the CCAA in 2001-02 when he was the assistant men’s soccer coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Jacobson helped put together a season that ended with the Toros finishing as the NCAA Division II National finalist. During that year, Jacobson coached five All-Conference players, the CCAA Player of the Year and three All-Americans. Jacobson was the assistant men’s and women’s coach at Cal State L.A. in 2002-03 and created the planning, development and administration of all phases with both programs. He also provided training and fitness regimes that included weight training and a spring season running program. Prior to moving out West, Jacobson was the assistant men’s coach at Division I Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania in 2000-01. Jacobson helped the Bisons beat then-No. 8 ranked South Carolina, the first time any team from Bucknell had beaten a team nationally-ranked in the Top 10. The team then made the conference playoffs and had the Defender of the Year in Bill Epley. Jacobson started his coaching career at Plattsburg State University in 1998. He holds an “A” license from the Soccer Federation and received his USSF National Goal Keeping license in January of 2010. Jacobson enjoyed a successful playing career collegiately at Syracuse University, where he was a four-year starter. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree in physical education at Syracuse in 1998 and furthered his education by completing his Master’s degree from Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2008. He was an alternate member of the U.S. Maccabbi team and then played professionally for two years in Albany for the Allycats and the Myrtle Beach Sea Dawgs in South Carolina. Jacobson and his wife, Nicole, reside in Redondo Beach with their three-year-old son, Jack and daughter Rachel, who was born in March of 2009.

Had both goals in a 2-1 win over UC San Diego on Oct. 19 and had two goals at Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 18. Had one goal in CCAA Championship game against CS Dominguez Hills on Nov. 8. Awards & Accolades La Salle University: Finished fourth on the team in scoring with 16 points after scoring six goals and four assists in 2008. Set a new conference record for assists in a season with 17 and set new Cal State L.A. single-season program records for assists and total points (43). Led the team as well in goals with 13, which tied the single-season record. Had four goals and one assist in the CCAA Championship Tournament and was named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player. Recorded her first career hat trick and added an assist in a 4-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the championship match on Nov. Awards & Accolades 8. Also added a pair of goals and an assist against Cal State East Bay on Oct. 16. Was named the CCAA Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 12-18 following that performance. Je ss e Ow e n s St a d i u m Jesse Owens Stadium is home to the Cal State L.A. soccer, cross country and track and field teams. With permanent bleacher seating for 5,000 spectators, it also hosts many other events throughout the year, including the University’s commencement ceremony each June. In preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, Cal State L.A. was selected as one of six sites to construct a world-class training track. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 29, 1982. The initial surface selected by the L.A. Organizing Committee for the track was “Recaflex S.” This surface, known for its versatility, is hard enough to record fast times but still soft enough to allow for a regular training regiment. The track was officially dedicated on May 22, 1983, during the L.A. Regional Championships of the ARCO Jesse Owens Games.
