Golden Eagles Men’s Soccer 2 He a d Co a c h ~ Ch r i s Ch a m i d e s After guiding the Golden Eagles to the NCAA West Region championship game for the second time in the past three years in 2008, Chris Chamides returns for his seventh season as the head coach of the men’s soccer program at Cal State L.A. He has quickly turned the Golden Eagles into one of the top teams in the West Region. Chamides has led the Golden Eagles to a 62-45- 15 overall record in his first six years, including a 37-19-10 mark, three consecutive trips to the four-team California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament and a pair of appearances in the NCAA playoffs over the past three years. Chamides has guided the Golden Eagles into the regional championship match in both NCAA appearances. Cal State L.A. has earned 23 All-CCAA and 12 All-Region awards during Chamides’ tenure. That total includes a pair of CCAA Freshman of the Year honors and one CCAA Newcomer of the Year award. In addition, Morten Martinsen earned All-America honors in 2006, while Ruben Chris Chamides Hansen did the same in 2008. The Golden Eagles recorded a 13-5-4 overall record in 2008 and Head Coach were ranked 14th in the nation in the final NSCAA poll. The 13 wins gave the Golden Eagles’ 37 victories over the past three seasons, which are the most over a three-year span at Cal State L.A. since 1992-94. The Golden Eagles also finished with their second top-20 national ranking in the past three years. Cal State L.A. was ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation during the regular season and spent the last nine weeks rated in the national Top-25. The Golden Eagles were 9-3-2 in conference play and advanced to the CCAA Championship Tournament for a third straight year. Cal State L.A. lost a hard-fought contest to top-seed Sonoma State in the first round, but the Golden Eagles got their revenge in the first round of the NCAA Tournament the next week, ousting Sonoma State on penalty kicks to advance to the regional championship game. Cal State L.A. had five players earn All-CCAA honors and four receive All-West Region recognition in 2008. In 2007, CSULA posted an 11-6-4 record in 2007 and recorded its second straight winning season for the first time since 1993-94. It was an impressive follow-up to the sensational 2006 season when the Golden Eagles enjoyed their best year since 1992 and finished the campaign ranked 18th in the nation. CSULA captured the CCAA South Division title and advanced to the NCAA regional championship game. Chamides was named the 2006 NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year after guiding the Golden Eagles to 13-8-2 overall record. He led Cal State L.A. to its first NCAA playoff berth since 1994 and the Golden Eagles recorded their first NCAA postseason victory since 1992 by knocking off No. 2 seed Seattle Pacific, 2-1, in a first-round match. The Golden Eagles battled to a 3-3 tie with Seattle University in the regional title game before falling in penalty kicks. The 13 wins were the most in season for CSULA since 1994 and the Golden Eagles recorded their first winning season since 1996. In 2005, Chamides guided the Golden Eagles to a 9-9 overall record and Cal State L.A. had both the CCAA Player of the Year in Morten Marthinson and CCAA Freshman of the Year in Kyle Hewitt. In 2004, Chamides earned CCAA Coach of the Year honors for the first time when he led the Golden Eagles to a 9-9-1 overall record and the program’s first .500 record since 1996. Chamides took over the program in 2003 and guided the team to a 7-8-4 record, which marked a significant turnaround from 2002 when the Golden Eagles were 5-13 and the seven wins were the most in a season since 1996. He has also served as an assistant coach for Chivas USA of for the past four seasons. In 2006, he worked under MLS Coach of the Year and current U.S. National Team head coach and he currently works under third-year Chivas USA Head Coach . In his time with Chivas USA, the roster has included Claudio Suarez, Ramon Ramirez, Paco Palencia and . Chivas USA reached the MLS playoffs in just its second season of existence in 2006 and Bornstein was named the 2006 MLS Rookie of the Year. Chamides came to Cal State L.A. from the of the Major League Soccer, where he served as the Senior Director of Soccer from 2000-02. While in the role, Chamides was directly involved in all soccer-related facets, including roster development. He helped build a San Jose squad that won the 2001 MLS Cup one year after having the league’s worst record. The roster included USA National Team members and . From 1997-99, Chamides was the head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla. The Flagler women’s team improved from 2-15 before his arrival to 12-7 in 1998. The men’s squad was ranked as high as 17th in the country and four Flagler players earned All-America honors during his tenure. During that time span, Chamides was also a coach in the Florida Olympic Development Program and was hired as the head coach in 1999 of the USL’s expansion Jacksonville Jade. In 1995, Chamides got his first collegiate coaching job when he was hired as an assistant for the University of Massachusetts’ women’s soccer program. During his two years in Amherst, Massachusetts was ranked as high as No. 6 in the country, won two Atlantic-10 Conference titles, made two consecutive “Sweet 16” appearances in the NCAA Division I playoffs and compiled a 30-9-3 record. His first head coaching job came in 1993 when he worked with both the junior varsity and varsity boys soccer teams at his alma mater, Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. That same year, he was also tabbed by then-Virginia head coach and former USA National Team coach to serve as a staff coach at the ’s summer soccer camps. In 1994, he also revived the S.C. Gjoa U-16 boys club team in Brooklyn, leading the squad to the State Cup. Chamides played in college for NCAA Division I Lafayette from 1989-92 and helped the Leopards to a Patriot League runner-up finish in 1990. He was a team captain as a senior. Lafayette posted a winning record in each of his four seasons and had an overall mark of 43-32-5. He owns an “A” license from the U.S. Soccer Federation and has an Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Chamides earned a Masters of Science degree in Sports Management from the University of Massachusetts. A former Cal State L.A. assistant coach with experience in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Michael Jacobson returns for his third season in his second stint with the Golden Eagles. He will be the assistant coach for the men’s and women’s soccer teams. Jacobson rejoined the Golden Eagle program prior to the 2007 season. Jacobson helped the Golden Eagles achieve great success in 2008. Cal State L.A.’s men’s team reached the NCAA Division II playoffs for the second time in the past three years and advanced to the West Region championship game. The Golden Eagles also qualified for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament for a third straight year and concluded the season with a national ranking of 14. The women’s team battled through a string of pre-season injuries Michael Jacobson and a slow start to finish with a 5-1-2 record over its last eight conference matches. Cal State L.A. finished with a 6-6-2 mark in Assistant Coach the CCAA, its third straight year of .500 or better. The Golden Eagles reached unprecedented heights with Jacobson’s assistance in 2007. Cal State L.A.’s women’s team reached the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time in the program’s history and also qualified for the CCAA Championship Tournament for the first time. The Golden Eagle women set a new single-season win standard after compiling a 13-6-4 record and earned a final national ranking of 15. The men’s team also reached the CCAA Championship Tournament and finished the season with an 11-6-4 record. Jacobson comes to Cal State L.A. after a successful run as the Assistant Director of Coaching for South Bay Soccer Club. He was the head coach for various age group teams between the ages of 9-19. With the emphasis on development at the youth level, Jacobson oversaw coaches and players. He also helped guide numerous players to compete in as well as gave opportunities for placement on Olympic Development teams and participation on age-level U.S. National teams. He has coached numerous players who are currently playing at the professional level who came out of the South Bay Soccer Club. Jacobson was introduced to the CCAA in 2001-02 when he was the assistant men’s soccer coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Jacobson helped put together a season that ended with the Toros finishing as the NCAA Division II National finalist. During that year, Jacobson coached five All-Conference players, the CCAA Player of the Year and three All-Americans. Jacobson was the assistant men’s and women’s coach at Cal State L.A. in 2002-03 and created the planning, development and administration of all phases with both programs. He also provided training and fitness regimes that included weight training and a spring season running program. Prior to moving out West, Jacobson was the assistant men’s coach at Division I Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania in 2000- 01. Jacobson helped the Bisons beat then-No. 8 ranked South Carolina, the first victory any team from Bucknell had beaten a team nationally- ranked in the Top 10. The team then made the conference playoffs and had the Defender of the Year in Bill Epley. Jacobson started his coaching career at Plattsburg State University in 1998 and currently holds an “A” license from the Soccer Federation (USSF). Jacobson enjoyed a successful playing career collegiately at Syracuse University, where he was a four-year starter. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree in physical education at Syracuse in 1998 and has furthered his education by completing his Master’s degree from Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2008. He was an alternate member of the U.S. Maccabbi team and then played professionally for two years in Albany for the Allycats and the Myrtle Beach Sea Dawgs in South Carolina. Jacobson and his wife, Nicole, reside in Redondo Beach with their two-year-old son, Jack and daughter Rachel, who was born in March.

Started in 10 games and compiled a 7-3 overall record with five shutouts. Played a total of 883 minutes and made 37 saves. Had a save percentage of .860 and a goals against average of 0.61. Recorded shutouts in his first three starts of the season in 1-0 wins at Vanguard on Sept. 5, at Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 14 and at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 21. Also had shutouts at Cal State Monterey Bay on Oct. 10 and against Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 26. Allowed one or no goals in nine of his 10 starts. Made a season-high six saves in three starts, all of them shutout victories. Gave up only one goal over 106:27 in a 2-1 double-overtime win at Seattle Pacific on Nov. 1. 2007: Appeared in six games and started five times for the Golden Eagles in his second season of action. Played a total of 509 minutes. Had a save percentage of .842 and a goals against average of 1.06. Recorded a career-high 10 saves in a 0-0 double-overtime tie at Cal Poly Pomona on Oct. 19 in his first start of the season. Earned his first victory by making five saves in a 2-1 win over State on Oct. 26. Posted his second win and second shutout by making five saves in a 1-0 win at Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 29. Also started for the Golden Eagles in a CCAA Championship Tournament match against Sonoma State and made six saves in a 2-0 loss. Started the last five games of the season for the Golden Eagles and was 2-1-2. 2006: Appeared in three games for the Golden Eagles and played a total of 204 minutes. Made 16 saves and allowed only three goals. Had a save percentage of .842. Made his first appearance at Cal Poly Pomona and made four saves over the final 24 minutes to preserve a 4-0 shutout win on Sept. 17. Got his first career start at San Francisco State and made three saves in a 3-2 victory on Sept. 29. Made a career-high nine saves in a 2-1 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Oct. 15. Charter Oak HS: Earned the Most Valuable Offensive Player and the Most Valuable Defensive Player on varsity teams. Personal: Son of Marcelino and Rosa David. Majoring in civil engineering. Enjoys listening to music. Lists every time he is under the three posts on the field as his most exciting experience in sports.

Tied for the team lead in goals scored with five and was tied for second in total points with 11. Scored both goals for Cal State L.A. in a 2-1 win at Cal Baptist on Sept. 8. The two-goal game was the third of his career. Scored the Golden Eagles’ first goal late in the second half of a 2-2 tie at Cal State San Bernardino on Sept. 12. Notched the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Oct. 24. Scored the final goal in a 2-0 win at Humboldt State on Sept. 26. 2007: Saw his season come to a quick end when he was injured against Seattle University on Sept. 4. Played in a total of three games and missed the final 18. Was granted a medical redshirt. 2006: Had a sensational first season for the Golden Eagles. Earned first-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors and was named the conference Newcomer of the Year. Also made the Daktronics All-Far West Region second team. Appeared in 19 games and started 17 times, including the last 15 of the season. Overcame early-season injury to once again perform as one of the top defenders in the conference. Team allowed one or fewer goals in 15 of the 19 matches he played in last season and recorded seven shutouts. Earned CCAA All-Academic honors. 2007: Had a tremendous first season for the Golden Eagles and was named the CCAA Freshman of the Year. Also earned All-CCAA honorable mention. Appeared and started in 20 of Cal State L.A.’s 21 games. Was named the team’s Newcomer of the Year. Helped a defense that allowed only 22 goals all season and recorded seven shutouts. Team allowed one or fewer goals in 15 of the 20 matches he played in. Soderslattsgymnasiet, Sweden: Competed in soccer. Club team was second best in the nation in 2006. Winner of the Oresunds Business Game. Member of the Lekfull UF whose members were named the best young entrepreneurs in Trelleborg. The company also competed for the “Best Logotype” award together with five other companies from all over Sweden in the business competition for young entrepreneurs. Personal: Son of Hakan and Karin Gunnarsson. Majoring in civil engineering. Enjoys tennis, snowboarding, listening to music and enjoying life. Lists finishing second in the nation in the U-16 Swedish Championship as his most exciting experience in sports.

Contributed an assist on Bryce Beall’s game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 21. Started the game-winning play with a hard shot that could not be saved cleanly by the Toro goalkeeper. 2007: Enjoyed a promising first season for the Golden Eagles. Appeared in 15 games and started three times. Scored a pair of goals and had four assists for a total of eight points. Picked up the game-winning goal with just 14 seconds remaining in regulation of a 1-0 win at Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 29. Got his first career goal at Cal State L.A. in a 4-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 14. Picked up assists in back-to-back games at UC San Diego on Sept. 23 and Cal State Stanislaus on Sept. 28 and again against San Francisco State on Oct. 26 and Cal State Monterey Bay on Oct. 28.
