Golden Eagles Men’s Soccer 2 HEAD COA C H ~ CHRIS CHAMIDES After guiding the Golden Eagles to the NCAA West Region championship game for the second time in the past three years in 2008, Chris Chamides returns for his seventh season as the head coach of the men’s soccer program at Cal State L.A. He has quickly turned the Golden Eagles into one of the top teams in the West Region. Chamides has led the Golden Eagles to a 62-45- 15 overall record in his first six years, including a 37-19-10 mark, three consecutive trips to the four-team California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament and a pair of appearances in the NCAA playoffs over the past three years. Chamides has guided the Golden Eagles into the regional championship match in both NCAA appearances. Cal State L.A. has earned 23 All-CCAA and 12 All-Region awards during Chamides’ tenure. That total includes a pair of CCAA Freshman of the Year honors and one CCAA Newcomer of the Year award. In addition, Morten Martinsen earned All-America honors in 2006, while Ruben Chris Chamides Hansen did the same in 2008. The Golden Eagles recorded a 13-5-4 overall record in 2008 and Head Coach were ranked 14th in the nation in the final NSCAA poll. The 13 wins gave the Golden Eagles’ 37 victories over the past three seasons, which are the most over a three-year span at Cal State L.A. since 1992-94. The Golden Eagles also finished with their second top-20 national ranking in the past three years. Cal State L.A. was ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation during the regular season and spent the last nine weeks rated in the national Top-25. The Golden Eagles were 9-3-2 in conference play and advanced to the CCAA Championship Tournament for a third straight year. Cal State L.A. lost a hard-fought contest to top-seed Sonoma State in the first round, but the Golden Eagles got their revenge in the first round of the NCAA Tournament the next week, ousting Sonoma State on penalty kicks to advance to the regional championship game. Cal State L.A. had five players earn All-CCAA honors and four receive All-West Region recognition in 2008. In 2007, CSULA posted an 11-6-4 record in 2007 and recorded its second straight winning season for the first time since 1993-94. It was an impressive follow-up to the sensational 2006 season when the Golden Eagles enjoyed their best year since 1992 and finished the campaign ranked 18th in the nation. CSULA captured the CCAA South Division title and advanced to the NCAA regional championship game. Chamides was named the 2006 NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year after guiding the Golden Eagles to 13-8-2 overall record. He led Cal State L.A. to its first NCAA playoff berth since 1994 and the Golden Eagles recorded their first NCAA postseason victory since 1992 by knocking off No. 2 seed Seattle Pacific, 2-1, in a first-round match. The Golden Eagles battled to a 3-3 tie with Seattle University in the regional title game before falling in penalty kicks. The 13 wins were the most in season for CSULA since 1994 and the Golden Eagles recorded their first winning season since 1996. In 2005, Chamides guided the Golden Eagles to a 9-9 overall record and Cal State L.A. had both the CCAA Player of the Year in Morten Marthinson and CCAA Freshman of the Year in Kyle Hewitt. In 2004, Chamides earned CCAA Coach of the Year honors for the first time when he led the Golden Eagles to a 9-9-1 overall record and the program’s first .500 record since 1996. Chamides took over the program in 2003 and guided the team to a 7-8-4 record, which marked a significant turnaround from 2002 when the Golden Eagles were 5-13 and the seven wins were the most in a season since 1996. He has also served as an assistant coach for Chivas USA of Major League Soccer for the past four seasons. In 2006, he worked under MLS Coach of the Year and current U.S. National Team head coach Bob Bradley and he currently works under third-year Chivas USA Head Coach Preki. In his time with Chivas USA, the roster has included Claudio Suarez, Ramon Ramirez, Paco Palencia and Jonathan Bornstein. Chivas USA reached the MLS playoffs in just its second season of existence in 2006 and Bornstein was named the 2006 MLS Rookie of the Year. Chamides came to Cal State L.A. from the San Jose Earthquakes of the Major League Soccer, where he served as the Senior Director of Soccer from 2000-02. While in the role, Chamides was directly involved in all soccer-related facets, including roster development. He helped build a San Jose squad that won the 2001 MLS Cup one year after having the league’s worst record. The roster included USA National Team members Landon Donovan and Jeff Agoos. From 1997-99, Chamides was the head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla. The Flagler women’s team improved from 2-15 before his arrival to 12-7 in 1998. The men’s squad was ranked as high as 17th in the country and four Flagler players earned All-America honors during his tenure. During that time span, Chamides was also a coach in the Florida Olympic Development Program and was hired as the head coach in 1999 of the USL’s expansion Jacksonville Jade. In 1995, Chamides got his first collegiate coaching job when he was hired as an assistant for the University of Massachusetts’ women’s soccer program. During his two years in Amherst, Massachusetts was ranked as high as No. 6 in the country, won two Atlantic-10 Conference titles, made two consecutive “Sweet 16” appearances in the NCAA Division I playoffs and compiled a 30-9-3 record.
