    A Greek Inscription: “Jesus is Present” of the Late Roman Period at Beth Loya by Titus Kennedy Introduction At the site of Khirbet Beth Loya, located in the Judean Hills east of Lachish and west of Hebron, a short but important ancient Greek inscription was carved into a rock wall of one of the underground caves. Although the ancient name of the site is unknown at this point, according to discoveries it was a prominent Christian site in the Byzantine period, and possibly earlier. The Byzantine church there is a single apse basilica that was erected ca. 500 AD, remained in use for over 200 years until it was apparently abandoned, and eventually the area was overtaken by a Muslim cemetery.1 Several elaborate mosaics, including Christian inscriptions, designs, and depictions of biblical scenes cover the church floor.2 The site, however, was also occupied earlier, in the Hellenistic and Roman periods.3 The Inscription During the Hellenistic and Roman periods, many subterranean installations were carved out of the soft rock on the site.4 In one of these subterranean caves near the Byzantine era church, an ancient Greek inscription mentions Jesus. The entrance to the cave is now obscured by foliage, but on the wall opposite the entrance, an inscription carved into the limestone can be plainly seen. The letters are much taller and deeper than is usual, which may indicate that it was meant to be plainly seen from anywhere in the small cave. The short inscription, which is all on one line, begins with a simple cross and reads ΙΕCΟΥC ΟΔΕ (or in miniscule ιεσους οδε).

Revesz1,a 1 Department of Computer Science, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE, 68588, USA Abstract. This paper presents a translation of the Malia Altar Stone inscription (CHIC 328), which is one of the longest known Cretan Hieroglyph inscriptions. The translation uses a synoptic transliteration to several scripts that are related to the Malia Altar Stone script. The synoptic transliteration strengthens the derived phonetic values and allows avoiding certain errors that would result from reliance on just a single transliteration. The synoptic transliteration is similar to a multiple alignment of related genomes in bioinformatics in order to derive the genetic sequence of a putative common ancestor of all the aligned genomes. 1 Introduction symbols. Elite titles and roles such as “Overseer of Cattle” were granted to high ranking officials or nobility during the New Kingdom, and large numbers of cattle were collected as tribute throughout the Pharaonic period. The movement of these animals along the Nile, whether for secular or sacred reasons, required the development of specialized vessels. The cattle ferries of ancient Egypt provide a unique opportunity to understand facets of the Egyptian maritime community. A comparison of cattle barges with other Egyptian ship types from these same periods leads to a better understand how these vessels fit into the larger maritime paradigm, and also serves to test the plausibility of aspects such as vessel size and design, composition of crew, and lading strategies. Examples of cargo vessels similar to the cattle barge have been found and excavated, such as ships from Thonis-Heracleion, Ayn Sukhna, Alexandria, and Mersa/Wadi Gawasis. This type of cross analysis allows for the tentative reconstruction of a vessel type which has not been identified previously in the archaeological record.

    Historic Graffiti: Teacher’s Notes Revised Oct. 2017 Summary of the project The Norfolk Medieval Graffiti Survey was established to undertake the very first large-scale and systematic survey of medieval church inscriptions in the UK. The project was entirely volunteer led, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and surveyed over 650 surviving medieval churches. The survey resulted in the recording of over thirty thousand previously unknown inscriptions, and the project received national recognition in the form of a number of awards. The educational sheets contain a number of historic graffiti related activities and subjects for group discussion and debate. This document contains a number of suggestions for guiding and expanding those discussions, and suggestions for a number of group activities. A short glossary and bibliography at the end of the document should enable group leaders and students to expand their study and debate in all areas of historic graffiti. The document is split into four main sections. Section 1: Background - an introduction to the study of ancient graffiti, why we study it, and what it can tell us about the past. Section 2: Interpretation - a summary of the main types of graffiti encountered in historic churches and other buildings, with a brief explanation of the meaning of each type.

The Parthenon sculptures consist of marble, architecture and architectural sculpture from the Parthenon in Athens, acquired by Lord Elgin between 1799 and 1810. Often referred to as both the Elgin Marbles and the Parthenon marbles, “Parthenon sculptures” is the British Museum’s preferred term.1 Lord Elgin’s authority to obtain the sculptures was the subject of a Select Committee inquiry in 1816. It found they were legitimately acquired, and Parliament then voted the funds needed for the British Museum to acquire them later that year.

Please refer to the information below for resolving these issues. iOS To prevent any further issues regarding logging into the app on iOS, you must avoid opening the app unless you've authenticated through Brown's log in portal. Opening the app outside of logging in through Brown, will most likely result in the inability to log in and use the app. If you are having issues logging into it: Solution 1 1. Open your device's web browser, visit rosettastone.brown.edu, and log in 2. Click the “Launch Rosetta Stone Language Lessons” link to launch the app 3. You will experience the same problem as in the past - you will just see a "splash" screen instead of being logged in. On this screen, click Enterprise And Education Learners. 4. On the login screen that appears, type three random values (just a single letter will work) into the Username, Password, and Namespace fields. 5. You will see an error message. Click Try again and proceed with the next step. 6. Return to your web browser and again, visit rosettastone.brown.edu. 7.
