BACKGROUND Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO) has started its journey in 1988 with a noble vision to stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalized people. Being a peoples' centered organization, we envisioned for a society which will be free from inequality and injustice, a society where no child will cry from hunger and no life will be ruined by poverty. Over the last thirty years of relentless efforts to make this happen, we have embraced new grounds and opened up new horizons to facilitate the disadvantaged and vulnerable people to bring meaningful and lasting changes in their lives. During this long span, we have adapted with the changing situation and provided the most time-bound effective services especially to the poor and disadvantaged people. Taking into account the government development policies, we are currently implementing a considerable number of projects and programs including micro-finance program through a community focused and people centered approach to accomplish government’s development agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN as a whole. -
Status of Fish Species Diversity in Ghaghat River in Northern Bangladesh M

Mostakim3 Abstract Fish species diversity and it’s conservation status of Ghaghat river in northern region of Bangladesh was investigated by field sampling using a taxonomic guide, FishBase data and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) conservation index. The study revealed that a total of 55 species of fishes belonging to 45 genera, 22 families and 9 orders were found in the river. Among the identified fish orders, Cypriniformes was the highest diverse group with 34% species abundance followed by Siluriformes and Perciformes with 24% each. On the other hand, fishes under the orders Beloniformes, Decapoda, and Tetradontiformes were the least abundant (2%). Fish species diversity was found prominent during the monsoon. Based on IUCN conservation index 6(11%), 10(18%) and 7(13%) species in Ghaghat river were identified as critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable respectively. A total 14 types of fishing gear under 8 major groups were found to operate in the studied river, which included some banned gears like gill net and seine net. An effective conservation strategy needs to be developed to stop indiscriminate fishing and to conserve the fish biodiversity in Ghaghat river. Huntington had called the “third wave of democracy”1 after a people’s movement toppled 15 years of military rule in December 1990. In the next 15 years, the country made gradual progress in fulfilling the criteria of a “minimalist democracy”2 – regular free and contested elections, peaceful transfer of governmental powers as a result of elections, fundamental freedoms, and civilian control over policy and institutions. -

Chapter-vi : Socio-economic Profile of the Study Area 189---198 Physical feature and socio-historical background Demography Literacy Administrative Unit Transport Communications Socio-economic Profile ofthe Study Area 189 For a proper understanding of the problem, it is essential to briefly refer to an ecological profile of Kushtia district as the values and characteristics of the masses very much depend upon, and are influenced by geographical, economic, social and political background of the area. Physical feature and socio-historical background Kushtia is not an ancient township but one of the eighteen oldest districts in independent Bangladesh. There is no much evidence to know the ancient history of Kushtia. The only tool to be informed about the district what was portrayed through description by different persons based on different regimes in the region governed. Hamilton's Gazetteer has mentioned of Kushtia town and of the fact that the local people called the town Kushtay (Kushte). In Tolemy's map, several little islands have been portrayed under the Ganges basin. These islands are considered as ancient Kushtia. 1 The district was under Natore Zemindar in 1725. Then it was under Rajshahi civil administration of Kanadarnagar Pargana. 2 Later East India Company transferred Kushtia under Jessore district in 1776. It was brought under Pabna district in 1828. Then Mahkuma Administration was established under Kushtia in 1861 and then brought under Nadia district.3 During the British rule, railway connection with Kolkata, capital of British India, established in 1860, made the town an alluring location for mills and factories, including the Jagneshwar Engineering Works (1896), Renwick and Company ( 1904 ), and the Mohini Mills (1919). -

Highlights As of 15 June 2020, according to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), there are 90,619 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Bangladesh, including1,209 related deaths; Case Fatality Rate (CFR) is 1.33%. On 12 June 2020, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare/DGHS introduced “Bangladesh Risk Zone-Based COVID- 19 Containment Implementation Strategy/Guide,” dividing areas in Red, Yellow and Green Zone based on the prevailing risk of the COVID-19 spread. On 13 June 2020, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Coordination Branch issued an Emergency Notification circular with the instructions for the worshipers in the Red Zone areas to offer prayers at their respective homes instead of public place of worship. On 14 June 2020, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) circulated a Note Verbale, which stated that foreign investors and businessmen will be granted on-arrival visas at the port of entry in Bangladesh if he/she has a PCR-based COVID- 19 negative medical certificate (with English translation) and relevant supporting documents for obtaining investment/business visa. -

BANGLADESH IN 2001 The Election and a New Political Reality? M. Rashiduzzaman Though some scattered incidents of violence took place, the Bangladesh election of October 1, 2001, was, relatively speaking, a peace- ful event, especially against the backdrop of galloping strife in the country in recent years. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its three coalition partners won 216 seats in the 300-member Jatiya Sangshad (national parlia- ment), and Begum Khaleda Zia became prime minister of the new BNP-led government. Both the Election Commission and the constitutionally man- dated caretaker government earned admiration at home and abroad for con- ducting a successful poll and transferring power to the newly elected leaders. However, the Awami League (AL), the BNP’s predecessor as ruling party, accused the BNP and its partners of a “crude rigging” of the election in con- nivance with the nonpartisan interim government and the Election Commis- sion.1 Periodic political and communal violence after the election forced the new government to promise an “intensive drive” against lawlessness, which included the dramatic move on Khaleda’s part of suspending the Chatra Dal Central committee of the BNP’s student front. 2 Confident after her landslide victory, Khaleda then made appeals to her political rivals for peace and coop- eration and called for all to work for the prosperity of Bangladesh. 3 M.
