The study analysed data from self-reported surveys from 133 members of the sub-district level disaster management committee and government officials working with DRR. Employing the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method, we find that political economy factors explain 68% of the variance in funding allocations. We also show that four categories of political economy factors—power and authority, interest and incentives, institutions, and values and ideas—are significantly influential over the distribution of DRR funding across subdistricts of Bangladesh. Our findings offer important policy implications to reduce the potential risks surrounding political economy influences in fund allocation and advance climate Citation: Islam, Shafiqul, Khondker finance literature. BACKGROUND Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO) has started its journey in 1988 with a noble vision to stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalized people. Being a peoples' centered organization, we envisioned for a society which will be free from inequality and injustice, a society where no child will cry from hunger and no life will be ruined by poverty. Over the last thirty years of relentless efforts to make this happen, we have embraced new grounds and opened up new horizons to facilitate the disadvantaged and vulnerable people to bring meaningful and lasting changes in their lives. During this long span, we have adapted with the changing situation and provided the most time-bound effective services especially to the poor and disadvantaged people. Taking into account the government development policies, we are currently implementing a considerable number of projects and programs including micro-finance program through a community focused and people centered approach to accomplish government’s development agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN as a whole.

FORKTAIL 19 (2003): 85-102 Further notable bird records from Bangladesh PAUL M. THOMPSON AND DAVID L. JOHNSON Details are given of 23 species new for Bangladesh that were recorded between June 1993 and June 2002, or that were inadvertently omitted from the most recent national checklist (Harvey 1990), or Thompson et al. (1993). New sightings and information are given for a further 101 species that either have few records since 1978, or for which there have been major changes in known status, or for which there is uncertainty over status. In addition, nine species of doubtful occurrence are discussed, and the status of threatened and Near Threatened species is updated where appropriate. Following a peace agreement, it has been possible to travel in many areas of the Chittagong Hill Tracts since late 1998; this area had been closed to outsiders since the 1960s. This has opened the possibility of rediscovering many species known in Bangladesh only from older or uncertain records, but unfortunately most of the original forest cover of this area has now been lost. The disaster killed an estimated 160 persons, including 115 persons in Rangamati alone. According to the Chittagong Divisional Health Office Control Room Report, a total of 187 injured persons were admitted in local level hospitals. Approximately 85% of patients were admitted in Rangamati. While landslide related disaster occurs nearly every year, the second highest death toll of 127 deceased persons was recorded in 2007 [Disaster Forum, June 2017]. Monsoon rains caused severe flooding in low-lying areas to significantly damage road and communication infrastructure. Flood water rendered remote communities in Bandarban, Chittagong, and Rangamati districts were inaccessible by road. On June 14th, mudslides in southeast Bangladesh claimed additional lives in Cox's Bazaar and Khagrachari districts to further damage homes and infrastructure.

Ann.M. R. Bangladesh Islam, M. Das, Agric. M. (2018) N. Mondal 22 (1) and : 95-105 G. M. Mostakim ISSN 1025-482X (Print)95 2521-5477 (Online) STATUS OF FISH SPECIES DIVERSITY IN GHAGHAT RIVER IN NORTHERN BANGLADESH M. R. Islam1*, M. Das1, M. N. Mondal2 and G. M. Mostakim3 Abstract Fish species diversity and it’s conservation status of Ghaghat river in northern region of Bangladesh was investigated by field sampling using a taxonomic guide, FishBase data and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) conservation index. The study revealed that a total of 55 species of fishes belonging to 45 genera, 22 families and 9 orders were found in the river. Among the identified fish orders, Cypriniformes was the highest diverse group with 34% species abundance followed by Siluriformes and Perciformes with 24% each. On the other hand, fishes under the orders Beloniformes, Decapoda, and Tetradontiformes were the least abundant (2%). Fish species diversity was found prominent during the monsoon. Based on IUCN conservation index 6(11%), 10(18%) and 7(13%) species in Ghaghat river were identified as critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable respectively. A total 14 types of fishing gear under 8 major groups were found to operate in the studied river, which included some banned gears like gill net and seine net. An effective conservation strategy needs to be developed to stop indiscriminate fishing and to conserve the fish biodiversity in Ghaghat river. Keywords: Fish, biodiversity, ghaghat river, conservation. Introduction barrages, pollution, using of banned fishing gears fish biodiversity is declining (Rahman Bangladesh is blessed with a large number et al., 2016).

  • A Baseline Survey on the Availability of Black Bengal Breeding Bucks in Different Districts of Bangladesh
    J. Bangladesh Agril. Univ. 9(1): 91–96, 2011 ISSN 1810-3030 A baseline survey on the availability of Black Bengal breeding bucks in different districts of Bangladesh M. A. M. Y. Khandoker, A. S. Apu, S. S. Husain and D. R. Notter1 Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh-2202, Bangladesh 1Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences, Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, USA Email: [email protected] Abstract The present study was conducted to assess the availability of Black Bengal breeding bucks in five districts from the Northern part (Lalmonirhat and Rangpur), Central part (Tangail and Mymensingh) and Southern part (Khulna) of Bangladesh and also to explore the relationship between distance of does from these breeding bucks and type of scarcity. The data were collected using a pre-tested questionnaire from 100 goat rearers of 100 villages in five districts. In this study, the selected characteristics of the respondents and other factors on the availability of Black Bengal breeding bucks were considered as independent variable whereas type of scarcity was considered as dependent variable. The buck and doe ratios were 1:164, 1:138, 1:114, 1:127 and 1:96 in Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Tangail, Khulna and Mymensingh district, respectively. The pooled buck and doe ratio was 1:128. More than 70% farmers faced severe shortage of breeding bucks for serving their does in the above districts which ultimately represent the overall situation of the country. Almost all farmers (100%) had to depend on natural mating to serve their does except the farmers of Mymensingh where 12% farmers depended on artificial insemination in goat.
