Building on theoretical work in both cognitive narratology and cognitive poetics, it argues that the mega-novel is primarily characterized by its inclusion of a substantial amount of pointless text (“cruft”), which it uses to challenge its readers’ abilities to modulate their attention and rapidly shift their modes of text processing. -

His own world and the real world were aligned on a single plane, but nowhere did they touch. The real world would move on in its uproar and leave him behind. The thought filled him with a great unease." Natsume Soseki, Sanshiro, 1908 The role of the literary artist in Japan 's long history is an honored one in large measure due to the power of language and literature to lift consciousness through imagination. Among Japan 's most gifted literary artists is Natsume Soseki (1867-1916), regarded by Nobel laureate Oe Kenzaburo as Japan 's "national writer" (Oe 1995, 44). Soseki1 resigned his position as professor of English literature at Tokyo Imperial University in 1907 in order to dedicate himself to writing fiction, in various genres. Among his earliest efforts was a trilogy which first appeared as serialized novels in the Asahi newspaper, for whom Soseki wrote. The first story in this trilogy is entitled simply Sanshiro, which refers to a young man's name. The second in the series is Sorekara, which means "and then." The last in the series is called simply Mon, or "gate." What follows is a study of these three novels as representing Soseki's effort to understand and communicate through his unique approach to fiction the rapidly changing dynamics in the "common nous"2 of Japanese society and culture during the Meiji Period (1868- 1912). -

1 What is “Murakamiesque” to Americans? —Considering Americans’ Preference of Haruki Murakami’s Wind-Up Bird and Kafka— Introduction “A Wild Haruki Chase: How the World Is Reading and Translating Murakami,” an international symposium held at the University of Tokyo in March 2006, did not just mark a turning point in Haruki Murakami’s career as a writer; it demonstrated that the United States was definitely something in the Worldwide Murakami phenomenon.1 In that cosmopolitan assembly, with translators of Murakami and literary critics gathered from around the world, one could easily acknowledge that special emphasis was placed on the participants from the United States. Richard Powers, a contemporary American writer, gave the keynote speech as a representative of all the participants, and Jay Rubin, Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University and a translator of Murakami’s works such as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Norwegian Wood, was also one of five participants representing the translators in the panel discussion. The United States is the most responsible for the English translations of Haruki Murakami’s works. This is not just because those who have translated his stories into English so far—Alfred Birnbaum, Jay Rubin, and Philip 1 The symposium was held at the University of Tokyo on March 25, 2006, with two workshops following on the next day. Article JAITS Who We Are Reading When We Are Reading Haruki Murakami: The Role of Various ‘Rewriters’ in Translating Haruki Murakami for the Anglophone Market David KARASHIMA (School of International Liberal Studies, Waseda University) This article examines how Haruki Murakami—the most widely read contemporary Japanese author in the world today—is translated in the Anglophone world. We suggest that the highly networked world of Haruki Murakami, which transcends literary spaces still largely divided along lines of language and nation state, may be seen as a kind of grand experiment in “contemporary literature”, and that while Japan and the United States are no doubt key centers in the laboratory that operates this experiment, this network comprises diverse “rewriters” across the globe that include translators, editors, agents, designers, critics as well as readers, bringing additional complexity to the question of who we are reading when we are reading Haruki Murakami. Described in the Anglophone press as “the most anticipated literary event of the year” (Barra, 2011) and “a global event in itself [that] passionately defends the power of the novel” (Haddow, 2011), Murakami’s novel 1Q84 arrived in English in the fall of 2011 “with all the razzmatazz associated with a Harry Potter novel” (Cummins, 2011). Ardent fans in London queued for the midnight launch at Foyles bookstore (Flood, 2011) and New Yorkers flocked to bookstores (Kyodo, 2011) to get hold of a copy of Murakami’s “mega-novel” (Miller, 2011)—initially published in Japan as three separate volumes—packaged into a single eye-catching volume by the popular designer Chip Kidd, pushing the book to open at number two for hardcover fiction on The New York Times bestseller list (New York Times, 2011). -
