LA FOCALISATION DANS LA RUE CASES NEGRES : UNE ANALYSE DU ROMAN DE JOSEPH ZOBEL ET DU FILM D’EUZHAN PALCY by KERRI ELIZABETH MCCOY (Under the Direction of Doris Kadish) ABSTRACT This thesis treats the social problems of Martinique in the 1930s. In this work, I will analyze the novel La rue Cases-Nègres by Joseph Zobel and the film adaptation by Euzhan Palcy, with the theory of focalization, in four chapters. I will study focalization, a theory that treats the problem of who sees ? in a texte, as opposed to who speaks?, which is a problem of narration. By the internal and unique focalization of a young Martinican in these two works, we will see the social hierarchy that was present between blacks, mulattos and whites during this time period, as a result of French slavery and colonialization. In Zobel’s novel and Palcy’s film, we will see the struggles that the people of Martinique experience in a country that is influenced by a mixture of African, Creole and French cultures. We will also see hope for improvement through the eyes of José, the internal and only focalizer in the two media. © 2020 Stefan Dmytro Kosovych NOURISHING THE POLITICAL BODY: BANQUETS IN EARLY THIRD REPUBLIC FRANCE, 1878 – 1914 BY STEFAN DMYTRO KOSOVYCH DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2020 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Emeritus Mark S. Micale, Chair and Director of Research Associate Professor Tamara Chaplin Professor Maria Todorova Professor Jean-Philippe R. Mathy ABSTRACT The most pressing issues of the day in France and in Europe – the place of workers in society, women’s rights, republicanism versus monarchy as the form of government, and expansion of the French empire – were advanced at banquets, ritualized gatherings over food and drink. Drawing on the key historical success of banquets as a means of political mobilization during the prelude to the Revolution of 1848, socialists/anarchists, royalists, imperialists, and feminists turned to the banquet to strengthen their political agendas during early Third Republic France. In Nourishing the Political Body: Banquets in Early Third Republic France, 1878 – 1914, I argue that banquets became a critical site for the construction of political and cultural power and identity by creating distinctive, tightly-knit communities that bolstered a diverse array of causes across the entire political landscape. Using police reports, government documents, accounts of banquet proceedings, newspaper articles, letters, and memoirs, my dissertation analyzes four prominent genres of banquets during late nineteenth and early twentieth-century France: commemorations of the Paris Commune, royalist, empire, and feminist. At these events, different political groups promoted specific agendas that were always ideological, oftentimes subversive, and even revolutionary.

How many of the scholars we solicited answered that the unexpected demands of remote teach- ing, or the obligations of home schooling, or any other unusual responsibilities caused by Covid-19 made it impossible for them to write a review? And how many reviewers balked at (while others kindly acquiesced to) the new practice of many publishers sending out review copies exclusively in digital form? Another indicator of Covid-inspired chaos in the publishing industry? When we asked Palgrave/Springer (which publishes more of the books we review than any other publisher) to send a book, scheduled for July 2020 publication, to our reviewer, the following reply came back: “Unfortunately, … Decoloniality and Gender in Jamaica Kincaid and Gisèle Pineau, seems to have been massively postponed; the publication date appears to be 31 May 2025.” Publishers, with warehouses closed, or open only sporadically, have gener- ally done their best but here’s a list of books that we requested (almost all for Bookshelf) but never received: Nous n’avons pas vu passer les jours, by Simone Schwarz-Bart & Yann Plougastel (Paris: Grasset, 2019, paper €19.00) La Souvenance, by Ernest Pépin (Petit-Bourg, Guadeloupe: Caraïbéditions, 2019, paper €17.30) My Time Among the Whites: Notes from an Unfinished Education, by Jennine Capó Crucet (New York: Picador, 2019, paper US$17.00) Ordinary Girls: A Memoir, by Jaquira Díaz (New York: Algonquin Books, 2019, cloth US$26.95) Saint X: A Novel, by Alexis Schaitkin (New York: Celadon Books, 2020, cloth US$26.99) Shame on Me: An Anatomy of Race and Belonging, byTessa McWatt (London: Scribe UK, 2019, paper US$17.13) Bla_k:EssaysandInterviews, by M.

H-France Review Volume 19 (2019) Page 1 H-France Review Vol. 19 (September 2019), No. 176 Louise Hardwick, Joseph Zobel: Négritude and the Novel. Liverpool: Liverpool University Press, 2018. ix + 275 pp. £80.00 (hb). ISBN 978-1-78694-073-5. Review by Martin Munro, Florida State University. One of the first Caribbean books I read was Joseph Zobel’s Et si la mer n’était pas bleue, his 1982 collection of short stories. It was taught in a first-year French literature class, and was chosen, I think, because it was a relatively “light” read, accessible to students at that level, and yet with enough substance to warrant serious critical study. There were stories of childhood, of the Nardal sisters in Paris, of a narrator figure relocated from Martinique to Senegal. There was certainly a lightness of touch, but one sensed also a seriousness, one wrought from experience, and that the apparent lightness was a means of distilling that experience, its frustrations, disappointments, its bitterness, even. In short, the book signaled that reading Caribbean literature was not a simple affair, that it would be an error to mistake surface sweetness or lightness for an absence of real, hard-won wisdom and insight, much as one should not take the sweet melodies of Caribbean music as signs of carefree living or an easy relationship with history. I saw the film of La Rue Cases-Nègres before I read the novel. Somewhat against the way that the short story collection was taught, the general feeling among scholars toward the novel and film was that it was light, lacking the critical weight or the stylistic innovation of the prominent Francophone Caribbean authors of the time—Glissant, the créolistes, or even Césaire, who was a contemporary of Zobel, and whose more impenetrable, more difficult work arguably overshadowed Zobel’s.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Black Shack Alley by Joseph Zobel Black Shack Alley. Following in the tradition of Richard Wright's Black Boy , Joseph Zobel's semiautobiographical 1950 novel Black Shack Alley chronicles the coming-of-age of José, a young boy grappling with issues of power and identity in colonial Martinique. As José transitions from childhood to young adulthood and from rural plantations to urban Fort-de-France on a quest for upward mobility, he bears witness to and struggles against the various manifestations of white supremacy, both subtle and overt, that will alter the course of his life. His ally in this struggle is his grandmother, M'man Tine, who fights her own weariness to release at least one child from the plantation village, a dirt street lined with the shacks of sugarcane workers.
