Hard Data and its Soft Underbelly MICHAEL SHAFIR As in many other former communist countries of East Central Europe1, antisemitism in Romania resurged almost concomitantly with the demise of the former regime2. Empirical research on antisemitism, however, emerged only considerably later and did not take off as a main focus until the establishment of the National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania ”Elie Wiesel” (INSHREW) in 2005. This does not imply that the subject of Jews, attitudes to Jews measured by instruments such as stereotypic perceptions and/or ”social distance”, or attitudes toward controversial Romanian historical figures linked to the country’s antisemitic past was not tangentially or even directly tackled on occasion. What lacked until 2005, however, was an effort to systematically (among other instruments, employing a standard questionnaire capable of rendering comparative results) place under focus the phenomenon in its synchronic and diachronic unfolding.

PUBLIC VS. PRIVAT ÎN MORłILE CELEBRITĂłILOR – CAZUL SERGIU NICOLAESCU Ana Iulia Soviany Şcoala Doctorală în ŞtiinŃele Comunicării, Universitatea din Bucureşti Abstract. After living their lives in the public eye, do famous people regain their “privacy” after death or, on the contrary, could death mean their final transformation into a sort of public “commodity”? In order to get a better understanding of this public-private dichotomy (in relation to death), this paper will investigate the way the Romanian media covered the death of the famous movie director Sergiu Nicolaescu. To this end, I studied (using content analysis) over 80 articles, which were published in three Romanian newspapers („Libertatea”, „Jurnalul NaŃional” and „Evenimentul Zilei”), between the 4th and the 11th of January 2013. The paper focuses on the role that the deceased’s family had in managing his posthumous “relationship” with the public. I will also argue that Nicolaescu’s widow came to represent a “scapegoat”. A widow dressed in an unlikely white, a public vocally questioning the way the Nicoleascu family had handled the director’s death, and a vivid debate over the rightness of cremation set the scene for one of the most intriguing news events of 2013 in Romania. Keywords: death, media, media event, celebrity. I. REPERE TEORETICE: MOARTEA ŞI CELEBRITATEA ÎN SECOLUL XXI I.1.

  • History in the Backstage of Romanian Television Archives
Journal of European History and Culture | Vol. 1, 1, 2012 History In The Backstage Of Romanian Television Archives Dana Mustata University of Groningen | Oude Kijk in ‘t Jatstraat 26 9712 EK Groningen | The Netherlands | [email protected] Abstract: The historical value of audiovisual archives lies as much in the documented collection they have to offer as in the losses that history has imprinted on them. Controversial material that has been confiscated by the secret police in communist Romania or records of programmes that have been destroyed due to economizing practices of ‘taking the silver out of the pellicle’ are important facts in the history of Romanian television. Equally important for history is the ‘leftover’ material filmed during the Romanian revolution, which now lives in the shadow of the screened footage. Pursuing the life story of an archival institution and understanding its relations with his- tory forms an important preliminary step for the historian in assessing the documented history within the archive. Keywords: Romania, television archives, Arhiva Multimedia, Romanian Revolution, Ceausescu, Securitate, communism. Readers around Europe may rightly associate Romanian television with its live screening of the revolution in De- cember 1989. However, the story told by the Romanian television archives goes far beyond the screened event. This is an article about Romanian television history built on the loss, contradictions, conflicts and challenges that have been brought to the surface through the story of its archives. It is

  • Evolutions of Contemporary Romanian Film Industry in the European Context
Finnish Journal for Romanian Studies | No 2 ● 2016 _________________________________________________________________ THE UNDERDOG OUTSIDE BECOMES AN INSIDE PLAYER: EVOLUTIONS OF CONTEMPORARY ROMANIAN FILM INDUSTRY IN THE EUROPEAN CONTEXT █ Ana Bento-Ribeiro █ Paris Nanterre University █ France ABSTRACT Until the beginning of the 21st century, the Romanian film industry played a marginal role in the larger European context. In this paper, we shall examine the scenario that followed the fall of the communist regime in 1989, focusing on the complex relations between the Romanian film industry and its European counterparts. As of today, both media and academia have largely analysed the aesthetic, narrative and historical features of the so-called ‘Romanian New Wave’. Notwithstanding, institutional and economic aspects allowing the (re)birth of this industry deserve further attention. Fifteen years after the release of the cornerstone of Romanian contemporary film d'auteur, Cristi Puiu's Stuff and Dough (Marfa şi banii, 2001), the dynamics of domestic production has evolved. If the pioneers of the New Romanian Cinema of the last decade defined new aesthetic and narrative standards that put Romania on the cinephiles’ map, their works thrived in transnational scenarios involving economic, political and media-related aspects. In a process that developed parallel to Romania's admission in the EU, international film co- production and distribution have become key elements for what is now a more stable, yet relatively small film industry. The Romanian context remains one where institutional grounds and public policies for film are still to consolidate. By examining funding mechanisms and institutional developments, we shall analyse how the factors resulting in the birth of a film trend later evolved into a complex scenario giving way to an industry where transnational relations have become essential for a steady production and larger circulation.

  • Comisarul Moldovan / Miclovan
GIDNI 2 COMMUNICATION, PUBLIC RELATIONS, JOURNALISM FICTION, PROPAGANDA AND HISTORICTRUTH IN THE FIRST MOVIES OF THE SERIES ”COMISARULMOLDOVAN/MICLOVAN Cătălin Negoiță, Assist. Prof., PhD, ”Dunărea de Jos”University of Galați Abstract: Analysing the Romanian filmography from the communist era, we can observe a stereotype: the abundance of propaganda. At least, at the first sight. The regime had drawn milestones in every social domain, including cinematography, which had to contribute, with examples of heroes, to the creation of the new human being. But, in many instances, the propagandistic side took the second place, overshadowed by the actions presented in such way to captivate the spectators. We are about to analyse two of Sergiu Nicolaescu‟s movies, that managed to detach from patterns and orientations of the time and recreate the exact image of 1945 Bucharest and its people. Again, the sententious message outgrown, if not strangled, the propagandistic message and so those productions met the success, in Romania and abroad. Marketable products, both in capitalist countries and in third world counties, the fallowing movies show that the director succeeded in eluding the propagandistic orders, making minimum concessions, from this point of view. Key-words: Sergiu Nicolaescu, filme, comisarul Miclovan/Moldovan, ficțiune, propagandă, adevăr.

  • Of Marshal Ion Antonescu in Post-Communist Romanian
THE ‘RETRIAL’ OF MARSHAL ION ANTONESCU IN POST-COMMUNIST ROMANIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY by Chiriac Bogdan Submitted to Central European University Nationalism Studies Program In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Professor Constantin Iordachi Second Reader: Professor Michael Stewart CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary, May 2008 Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the remarkable turnabout in the interpretation of Ion Antonescu and his authoritarian regime in Post-Communist Romanian historiography. Specifically, I intend to analyze how the present-day apologists of Ion Antonescu reopened the discussions over the trial of the major war criminals (May 1946) with the purpose of uncovering its alleged procedural errors and ‘politicization’. The real motivation behind these efforts was to shift attention away from the real content of the charges that were brought against Ion Antonescu and cast the former ruler in the role of a ‘victim’ of the Communist takeover that was ‘undeservedly’ put on trial and ‘unjustly’ sentenced to death. I argue that these attempts to lessen the magnitude of Ion Antonescu’s crimes are part of a wider rehabilitation trend that aims to transform the wartime ruler into a patriot and anti-Communist of almost mythical proportions. Key-words: Ion Antonescu, political trial, historiography, manipulation of history, rehabilitation. CEU eTD Collection 2 Acknowledgements I would like to like to express my gratitude to my supervisors, Professor Constantin Iordachi and Professor Michael Stewart, for their invaluable assistance and guidance throughout the entire writing process. I owe a special debt to Professor Michael Miller, whose useful comments helped me improve both the structure and the content of this paper.
