El intermareal rocoso de Veracruz, México, es un ecosistema que resguarda una gran biodiversidad. Sin embargo, no se ha reconocido su relevancia como con otros ecosistemas marinos. El objetivo de este estudio fue elaborar las primeras listas florística y faunística del intermareal rocoso de El Pulpo, localizada en el municipio de Cazones, Veracruz. Para ello, desde el 2013 a 2016 se efectuaron muestreos en la franja intermareal rocosa en periodos de marea baja para el registro de la biota marina y la recolecta de material biológico para su identificación taxonómica. Además, se realizó una revisión bibliográfica para complementar las listas de especies. Se registraron 51 especies de macroalgas bentónicas, una especie de fanerógama, 186 especies de invertebrados, y cinco especies de vertebrados para un total de 243 especies marinas. Las Rhodophyta son la ficoflora más representada con 29 es- pecies, mientras que el Phylum Mollusca lo es para la fauna con 139 especies. La mayoría de las especies marinas se registraron en el intermareal medio e inferior; por consiguiente la menor riqueza se registró en el intermareal superior y la constituyen algas filamentosas y foliosas, así como moluscos y crustáceos con hábitos ramoneadores y filtradores. -

Editor: Leticia Burone, Universidad de la República, Uruguai Abstract The Late Pleistocene marine molluscan assemblage from La Eurytellina angulosa, Kellia sp., Paraleptopecten bavayi, and Pandora Coronilla is one of the richest Quaternary marine deposit sp. Almost all recorded species from the assemblage are from Uruguay. This contribution represents an update of the marine and live in soft bottoms, although hard/consolidated bivalve and gastropod species composition of this deposit substrate species and microgastropods that live in ecological and includes a palaeoecological analysis of the molluscan interaction with other invertebrate taxa were also found. Ark clams and their relatives (Arcida) display two main ecologies represented by epifaunal and infaunal lifestyles. Their mantle margin includes features, such as photosensory and muscular organs, that may coincide with each habit, making these bivalves a suitable model to explore evolutionary convergence in the marine benthos. To test for the evolutionary association between lifestyles and morphology, we gathered data on the mantle margin for 64 species across all six extant arcidan families. A molecular phylogeny of Arcida was inferred based on four gene sequences from 54 species and used to study trait evolution. Our results support the hypothesis that photoreceptor organs had a single origin and that infaunal lineages lost these structures in independent events, suggesting a correlated pattern of evolution. -

Adamowicz The molecular clock is an important tool in evolutionary biology for dating the tree of life, particularly for lineages with a poor fossil record such as many marine invertebrates. Historically, biogeographic calibrations assumed simultaneous divergence of allopatric pairs of sister lineages, which is problematic for long and complex vicariance events. This thesis presents a new methodology for calibrating the molecular clock using complex biogeographic events, the iterative calibration approach. This approach calibrates the rate of molecular evolution by finding the rate that achieves concordance between multiple lines of evidence: geographic distributions, genetic divergences, geological history, and the fossil record. Using the novel and successful method, this study explores two biogeographic events for clock dating, the opening/re-closure of the Bering Strait and the formation of the Isthmus of Panama, and investigates rates and patterns of molecular evolution in four major groups of marine invertebrates (echinoderms, molluscs, arthropods, and polychaetes) and between Arctic vs. tropical taxa. When investigating the divergence rate in 157 sister pairs of marine invertebrates based on publicly available sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, the results show that, generally, echinoderms have slower rates of molecular evolution than molluscs and polychaetes. -

Kabat2 ABSTRACT Rudolph Amandus Philippi (known in Chile as Rodulfo Amando Philippi), was one of the longest-lived and most prolific malacologists of the 19th century, as his scientific work began in Germany in the 1830s and continued unabated until his death in Chile in 1904. Philippi contributed significantly to malacology: he described over 2,500 new taxa of Recent and fossil molluscs from around the world (2,528 species, 40 genera and three families), particularly from Italy and Chile, and discussed numerous taxa described by other authors. Philippi initially published primarily on Recent and fossil molluscs from Europe in the 1830s, then expanded to marine molluscs from around the world by the 1840s. In 1851, Philippi escaped the German Revolution by emigrating to Chile, where in 1853 he became the director of what is now the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural (Santiago) and a professor at the Universidad de Chile. -
