Waikīkī Homeless Outreach

Pupukahi I Holomua (Unite to move forward)

White sandy beaches, beautiful sunsets, tropical breezes and palm trees are usually the first thoughts that come to mind when most people think of Waikīkī. We live and do business in paradise, but not everyone is on vacation. There are hundreds of people experiencing homelessness in Waikīkī every day.

But, we’ve taken a step n the right direction – together.

Through the generosity and vision of the Business Improvement District Association (WBIDA), Waikiki Health Center’s Care-A-Van Program was able to hire a social worker to help the homeless in Waikīkī.

Together with other Care-A-Van staff members, the Waikiki Social Worker used all of the Center’s services – medical care, behavioral health counseling and social services – and provided referrals for job and shelter assistance, substance abuse treatment and other help.

The main objective was to develop trusting relationships with people living on the streets of Waikīkī that would allow them to accept services and ensure ongoing management of their chronic conditions.

Working under the supervision of Care-A-Can Program Director, Darlene Hein, the Waikiki Social Worker also served as a contact person for Waikīkī business owners, residents, police and others so that many sectors of the community could join forces to help homeless families and individuals get the care and services they need.

If you need assistance with an individual who is homeless, please call the Waikiki Social Worker at 295-09608 or Darlene Hein, Program Director at 295-9605. Continued on page 3

Program to Share Hawaiian Culture through Art with Renowned Crafter Annie Kanahele

WHAT: Sheraton Princess Ka‘iulani’s Kupuna & Master Artisan Series September workshop

WHEN: Friday, September 19 at 6 p.m. at the Ka‘iulani Room

WHERE: Saturday, September 20 at 9 a.m. at the Dolphin Lanai

Visitors and residents of the islands are invited to join in on a unique Hawaiian cultural experience as renowned Hawaiian artisan Annie Kanahele shares her gift of Ni‘ihau shell lei making at the Sheraton Princess Ka‘iulani.

Sheraton’s Kupuna & Master Artisan Series offers an opportunity to take a look back into history and have fun while learning about ’s rich cultural history. In this workshop, participants are encouraged to participate and learn from some of Hawai‘I’s most well-respected master artisans. Kanahele will be offering guests a hands-on experience in creating beautiful shell leis, as well as an opportunity to view some of Kanahele’s finest creations.

Acknowledging the importance of offering visitors a Hawaiian sense of place, Sheraton Princess Ka‘iulani General Manager Fred Orr said, “It is very important to Sheraton to honor and share the Hawaiian culture with visitors as this will give them the foundation for broadening their interest in and love of the islands. Sheraton has always had a rich history of perpetuating the aloha spirit to our guests so the Kupuna & Master Artisan Series is a great way to continue sharing the Hawaiian culture and enhancing the visitor experience.”

Kanahele is a humble, spiritual and soft-spoken woman from the island of Ni‘ihau. Raised on the “forbidden island,” she learned to make Ni‘ihau shell leis at a young age. A multi-talented woman, she has long been respected for her perpetuation of Hawaiian culture through the creation of Ni‘ihau shell leis, singing and composing Hawaiian songs on her ukulele, the teaching of hula to senior citizens, and, as a native speaker of the Hawaiian language, her teaching of the Hawaiian language to young children. In 2001, Kanahele and Ilei Beniamina won two prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano awards – the Hawaiian Language Performance of the Year and Religious Album of the Year for Na Himeni Ho‘omaika‘i I Ke Akua. The following year in 2002, Kanahele received her third Na Hoku Hanohano award for Religious Album of the Year for Na Leo O Ke Kula Ni‘ihau O Kekaha.

Any inquiries about the Sheraton Princess Ka‘iulani or Sheraton’s Kupuna and Master Artisan series should contact Kanani Okuda at 808-922-5811.
