Christian School Athletic League (CSAL) Handbook

Revised August 17, 2017

CSAL League Philosophy

“The goal of the Christian School Athletic League is to give students the chance to compete against other schools in athletic activities.

Good sportsmanship and the display of Christian values are expected of every player, coach, parent, and school official in the Christian School Athletic League (CSAL).

Win-Loss records will not be published thus a league champion will not be determined.”

Isaiah 40:29-31 He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. 30 Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. 31 But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

BASKETBALL RULES & GUIDELINES

1. Boys use an official men’s basketball, girls use an official women’s basketball.

2. Catholic school CSAL teams may have up to a total of four (4) players per team that participated in the Catholic Schools League basketball season.

3. Teams with leads (press limitations etc) A team with a fifteen (15) point lead for boys, a ten (10) point lead for girls may not full court press at anytime on the opposing team.

There will be a verbal warning from the referee for the first infraction. A team foul will be assessed on each infraction after the first infraction.

Recommendation from CSAL: If a team has a fifteen point lead (15), it is recommended that they try the following: 1) Pass multiple times on offense 2) Eliminate fast break opportunities 3) Use a non-aggressive zone defense 4) Call a timeout to remind players to set-up offense.

4. Each basketball player must have a number on the back of his/her shirt/uniform. When purchasing new uniforms, we encourage schools to order jerseys with a number on the front and back.

Rosters should be presented to the basketball scorer at least ten minutes before game time.

5. All home teams must have: a) SCOREBOARD b) SCOREBOOK c) SCOREKEEPER d) TIMER e) COMPETENT BASKETBALL OFFICIALS 1. CSAL schools must provide certified referees / officials to officiate their home CSAL basketball games.

2. Certified officials means that they are part of a nationally certified organization (e.g. NFHS, USA Basketball, FIBA). Revised August 17, 2017

3. Please feel free to contact the following organization:

Aloha Basketball Officials – Chuck Martin ([email protected])

4. If there is only one official available, the game may proceed if both head coaches agree.

5. Schools, who do not provide certified officials will not host any season games for the next sport season.

6. PARTICIPATION RULE IN BASKETBALL: Coaches must designate a different set of five players at the four minute substitution period for the first and third quarters. No player can player the entire first and third quarters unless the team has less than ten players except for injury or extenuating circumstances. No additional substitutions can occur.

Game play will stop at the four minute mark and coaches must have the second set of five players ready to check in.

Recommendation: Teams, who have less than ten players, use different players that are staying in for the remaining four minutes for the first quarter than the third quarter. (e.g. if a team has eight players, there will be two players that need to stay on the court for the final four minutes of the first quarter. For the third quarter, use two different players to stay in the final four minutes.)

7. Games will be 32 minutes long – four (4) quarters of eight (8) minutes running time each. Running time will stop during each of the five (5) allowable timeouts (3 full time outs and 2 30-second timeouts) and ALL fouls, shooting and non-shooting.

The last two minutes of the second and fourth quarters will be regular stop time, with time stopped whenever one or both officials blow their whistle(s).

Time always starts when any player on the court touches the ball.

One-and-one free throws will be shot on the seventh team foul. Two free throws will be awarded on the tenth team foul and thereafter in each half. Revised August 17, 2017

On the shooter’s final free throw attempt, players may enter the key upon the release from the free throw shooter.

Overtime: One (4) minute regular stop time. Start with jump ball at center circle. One additional timeout per team is added. Unused timeouts during the game will be added to the additional timeout. Any player on the court and/or the coach may call a timeout.

8. Only two (2) point field goals and one point free throws are counted. There are no three (3) point field goals.

9. Visiting school has the right to have one representative sit with the timer and/or scorekeeper and help monitor time-keeping and/or scorekeeping.

10. Inappropriate language (swearing) will result in an automatic one shot technical foul and the player must be subbed out for one possession.

11. NFHS rules for basketball: CSAL will follow all NFHS rules unless there are rule changes stated above. If there are any questions regarding NFHS rules, please contact CSAL Coordinator.

Revised August 17, 2017

VOLLEYBALL RULES & GUIDELINES

1. Height of net – 7’ 0”. “Regulation Volleyball”, there will be no Volley Lite Balls used. Home team provides the volleyball, officials and scoreboard.

2. Official NFHS volleyball rules are used unless a specific rule change is noted below. Rally scoring will be used. The mandatory three games shall be 25 points, must win by 2 with a 27-point cap.

3. Because of the rally scoring format, a time limit will not be used for each game.

4. Serving a. Competitive Division i. A player must serve anywhere behind the end line, between the sidelines. ii. A server is allowed to release the ball for service, then catch it or drop it to the floor during one turn of service.

b. Developmental Division i. A developmental player may start their serve beyond the service line or on the service line.

ii. If the player is serving underhand and is starting at the service line, the league allows players in the to take three steps before service.

Notes: Please do not have your players take three big steps so that they are almost reaching the 3m line on the court to serve.

Also three steps means only three steps: please do not have players take three steps, stop, and then take another step or two and serve.

If your players can serve it over the net without the three steps then have them serve behind the service line. If your player develops a standing over hand serve, then they must be behind the service line.

Recommendation: If a player accidentally steps on the service line, stop play, give the coach a friendly reminder about service line foot fault, and have the player re-serve. Revised August 17, 2017

iii. After three consecutive serves, the player must serve beyond the service line until the conclusion of his/her rotation.

iv. A server is allowed to release the ball for service, then catch it or drop it to the floor during one turn of service.

5. IF each team has taken a set in the first two sets, a coin toss for serve or side will take place for the third game. Teams will switch sides at 13 points. If a team has earned the victory (e.g. Home team took the first two sets), opposing team will have serve in the third set and teams will not switch sides during the third set. Third set is still to 25 points, win by 2, cap at 27.

6. All home teams must furnish: ● SCOREBOARD ● SCOREKEEPER ● COMPETENT VOLLEYBALL OFFICIALS (REFEREES) ● Age requirements

One of the two referees must be an adult at least 18 (eighteen) years old.

The other may be a student at least 16 (sixteen) years old or older with knowledge and experience in volleyball.

● Each game must have at least two (2) referees.

● If referees are not available for a game, both head coaches may referee if both agree.

● If there is only one referee available, the game may proceed if both head coaches agree.

Recommendation: Ask your school’s volleyball players if they would like to volunteer and help being R2, scorer, and timer. Normally students are willing to help out. Please make sure to check if they were certified through club volleyball team.

7. PARTICIPATION RULE FOR VOLLEYBALL: There is no Participation Rule for volleyball. There is no restriction of the amount of substitutions a team can make in a set. It is the responsibility of the coach to play all of his/her players per match. There will not be a rule to enforce it. Revised August 17, 2017

This rule only applies to our student-athletes participating in each set as the previous rule restricted the # of student-athletes allowed per set.

8. SUBSTITUTION RULE FOR VOLLEYBALL: For volleyball substitution (e.g. Player A for Player B), you must follow the standard volleyball substitution rules:

1) Coach must notify a substitution to the second official or the top official before the top official signals for service.

2) Player B (coming from the bench) must substitute in the designated substitution area (between Center line and back-row attack line) for Player A.

3) Official will signal in the sub and player can enter the court.

Please remember that once a reserve enters the game (Player B), he/she can only re-enter for the player that he/she replaced. This is to prevent the same player to enter the game to serve/attack the entire set.

9. Coaches may only approach officials in a courteous and civil manner.

10.If both coaches agree and time permits, it is suggested that teams play more than three sets.

11.Inappropriate language (swearing) will result in an automatic side out and/or rally point. The player must also be subbed out for one play.
