3 Hawai‘i Independent School Enrollment Overview

Statewide Overview This report accounts for all HAIS member preschool through grade 12 schools, as well as two non-member schools. HAIS higher members are not included. The 97 licensed and/or accredited schools included in the 2020-2021 report, account for a total enrollment of 32,849 in preschool through 12th grade, which is a decrease of 1,013 students (-2.99%) from last year’s total of 33,862. account for the largest enrollment loss, indicating a 22.57% decrease in enrollment largely due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and subsequent DHS Guidelines. Conversely, there is a slight increase in overall enrollment of .07% in grades K through 12. Neighbor Island K-12 schools saw the greatest increase in student enrollment, experiencing an increase of 4.94%. The grade level analysis revealed that grades K-5 experienced the most significant overall increase of 3.14% across all islands, while grades 6-8 experienced a 3.06% overall decrease and grades 9-12 a .59% decrease in student enrollment.

The following schools from Oahu are not included in this year’s report due to closure, change in nonprofit status or lack of data provided: Playmate Day Care Center & Grade School Ltd., St. John the Baptist , Central , and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. 267 students were affected by these school closures.

Oahu • Honolulu district reported 18,306 students, a decrease of 538 (-2.86%) from last year’s total of 18,844. • Central district reported 2,130 students, a decrease of 238 (-10.05%) from last year’s total of 2,368. • Leeward district reported 2,155 students, a decrease of 294 (-12%) from last year’s total of 2,155.

4 • Windward district reported 2,393 students, a decrease of 82 (-3.31%) from last year’s total of 2,475. 27 schools reported enrollment the same or increasing. 37 schools reported a decrease in enrollment. Of Oahu Schools with decreasing enrollments: • 12 had decreases of less than 5% • 4 had decreases of 5.1% - 10% • 12 had decreases of 10.1% - 20% • 9 had decreases of more than 20% In total, Oahu preschool – grade 12 schools reported enrollment of 24,984, down 1,152 students (-4.41%) from last year’s total of 26,136.

Neighbor Islands • Hawai’i reported 3,287 students, a decrease of 7 (-.21%) from last year’s total of 3,294. • Maui reported 3,287 students, a decrease of 4 (-.12%) from last year’s total of 3,280. • Kauai reported 912 students, an increase of 182 (24.93%) from last year’s total of 730. • Molokai reported 34 students, a decrease of 4 (-10.53%) from last year’s total of 38. 20 schools reported enrollment remaining the same or increasing. 13 reported decrease in enrollment. Of neighbor island schools with decreasing enrollments: • 5 had decreases of less than 5% • 0 had a decrease of 5.1%-10% • 4 had decreases of 10.1% - 20% • 4 had decreases of 20% In total, neighbor island preschool – grade 12 schools reported enrollment of 7,509, up 167 students (2.27%) from last year’s total of 7,342. Note: Kauai Christian School was included on this year’s enrollment report but was not included in previous years. This accounts for an additional 156 students.

Special Purpose Schools Three “special purpose” schools reported enrollment of 356 students, down 28 students (-7.29%) from last year’s total of 384 students. These schools include (Oahu), Variety School (Oahu), Horizons Academy (Maui).

8 Preschool Overview

Statewide During the 2020-2021 school year, Hawai‘i’s preschools reported a total enrollment of 2,542 students, down 741 (-22.57%) from last year’s total of 3,283. The loss of preschool students was largely due to the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic and subsequent regulations and DHS Guidelines. Note: Only schools that were open during the 2020-2021 school year were included in this section of the report.

Oahu • Honolulu district reported 1,008 students, a decrease of 230 (-18.58%) from last year’s total of 1,238. • Central district reported 354 students, a decrease of 123 (-25.79%) from last year’s total of 477. • Leeward district reported 280 students, a decrease of 146 (-34.27%) from last year’s total of 426. • Windward district reported 332 students, a decrease of 82 (-19.81%) from last year’s total of 414. In total, Oahu schools reported enrollment of 1,974 students, a decrease of 581 (-22.74%) from last year’s total of 2,555.

Neighbor Islands • Hawai’i reported 178 students, a decrease of 96 (-35.04%) from last year’s total of 274. • Maui reported 254 students, a decrease of 81 (-24.18%) from last year’s total of 335. • Kauai reported 136 students, an increase of 17 students (14.29%) from last year’s total of 119. In total, neighbor island schools reported enrollment of 568, a decrease of 160 students (-12.98%) from last year’s total of 728.

11 Grades K-12 Overview

Statewide During the 2020-2021 school year, Hawai‘i’s schools with grades K through 12 reported a total enrollment of 30,306 students, up 22 (.07%) from last year’s total of 30,284. Note: Only schools that were open during the 2020-2021 school year were included in this section of the report.

Oahu • Honolulu district reported 17,298 students, a decrease of 191 (-1.09 %) from last year’s total of 17,489. • Central district reported 1,776 students, a decrease of 51 (-2.79%) from last year’s total of 1,827. • Leeward district reported 1,875 students, a decrease of 34 (-1.78%) from last year’s total of 1,909. • Windward district reported 2,061 students, which is equal to last year’s total of 2,061. In total, Oahu schools reported enrollment of 23,010, down 276 students (-1.19%) from last year’s total of 23,286.

Neighbor Islands • Hawai’i reported 3,109 students, an increase of 89 (2.95%) from last year’s total of 3,020. • Maui reported 3,022 students, an increase of 77 (2.61%) from last year’s total of 2,945. • Kauai reported 776 students, an increase of 165 (27%) from last year’s total of 611. • Molokai reported 34 students, a decrease of 4 students (-10.53%) from last year’s total of 38. In total, neighbor island schools reported enrollment of 6,941, which is an overall increase of 327 students (4.94%) from last year’s total of 6,614.

Statewide During the 2020-2021 school year, Hawai‘i’s schools with grades K-5 are reporting a total enrollment of 11,142 students, up 339 (3.14%) from last year’s total of 10,803. Note: Only schools that were open during the 2020-2021 school year were included in this section of the report.

Oahu • Honolulu district reported 4,956 students, an increase of 23 (.47 %) from last year’s total of 4,933. • Central district reported 1,110 students, an increase of 5 (.45%) from last year’s total of 1,105. • Leeward district reported 1,174 students, a decrease of 22 (-1.84%) from last year’s total of 1,196. • Windward district reported 1,166 students, an increase of 121 students (11.58%) from last year’s total of 1,045. In total, Oahu K-5 schools reported enrollment of 8,406, up 127 students (1.53%) from last year’s total of 8,279.

Neighbor Islands • Hawai’i reported 1,094 students, an increase of 75 (7.36%) from last year’s total of 1,019. • Maui reported 1,149 students, an increase of 53 (4.84%) from last year’s total of 1,096. • Kauai reported 399 students, an increase of 98 (32.56%) from last year’s total of 301. • Molokai reported 3 students, which is equal to last year’s total of 3. In total, neighbor island schools reported enrollment of 2,645, up 226 students (9.34%) from last year’s total of 2,419.

18 Grades 6-8 Overview Statewide During the 2020-2021 school year, Hawai‘i’s schools with grades 6-8 reported a total enrollment of 7,646 students, down 241 (- 3.06%) from last year’s total of 7,887. Note: Only schools that were open during the 2020-2021 school year were included in this section of the report.

Oahu • Honolulu district reported 4,328 students, a decrease of 155 (-3.46 %) from last year’s total of 4,483. • Central district reported 392 students, a decrease of 46 (-10.50%) from last year’s total of 438. • Leeward district reported 456 students, a decrease of 14 (-2.98%) from last year’s total of 470. • Windward district reported 534 students, a decrease of 33 (-5.82%) to last year’s total of 567. In total, Oahu schools reported enrollment of 5,710, which is a decrease of 248 students (-4.16%) from last year’s total of 5,958.

Neighbor Islands • Hawai’i reported 767 students, an increase of 26 (3.51%) from last year’s total of 741. • Maui reported 838 students, a decrease of 22 (-2.56%) from last year’s total of 860. • Kauai reported 200 students, an increase of 23 (12.99%) from last year’s total of 177. • Molokai reported 21 students, a decrease of 27 (-22.22%) to last year’s total of 27. In total, neighbor island schools reported enrollment of 1,826, up 21 students (1.16%) from last year’s total of 1,805.

Statewide During the 2020-2021 school year, Hawai‘i’s schools with grades 9-12 reported a total enrollment of 11,447 students, down 68 (- .59%) from last year’s total of 11,515. Note: Only schools that were open during the 2020-2021 school year were included in this section of the report.

Oahu • Honolulu district reported 8,014 students, a decrease of 59 (-.73 %) from last year’s total of 8,073. • Central district reported 274 students, a decrease of 10 (-3.52%) from last year’s total of 284. • Leeward district reported 245 students, an increase of 2 (.82%) from last year’s total of 243. • Windward district reported 361 students, a decrease of 22 (-5.74%) to last year’s total of 383. In total, Oahu schools reported enrollment of 8,894, which is a decrease of 89 students (-.99%) from last year’s total of 8,983.

Neighbor Islands • Hawai’i reported 1,248 students, a decrease of 12 (-.95%) from last year’s total of 1,260. • Maui reported 964 students, a decrease of 12 (-1.23%) from last year’s total of 976. • Kauai reported 177 students, an increase of 44 (33.08%) from last year’s total of 133. • Molokai reported 10 students, a decrease of 2 students (25%) from last year’s total of 8. In total, neighbor island schools reported enrollment of 2,399, which is an increase of 22 students (.93%) from last year’s total of 2,377.
