Waikīkī’s first infinity edge pool opens at Sheraton Resort

On November 2, Sheraton Waikiki Resort held a grand opening of Waikīkī’s first Infinity Edge Pool and adjacent Edge of Waikiki pool bar. The opening of the new pool now completes the Sheraton Waikiki’s master plan to provide its guests with both a family-oriented pool at the Helumoa Playground (opened December 2008) and an adult-only offering at its Infinity Edge Pool.

Breaking ground January 2009, the new Infinity Edge pool offers unparalleled views of Waikīkī Beach and is situated mere feet above the ocean level, creating a mirage effect where guests in the pool perceive the pool and ocean to seamlessly be bound into one body of water.

Just steps away, the resort’s new signature pool bar called Edge of Waikiki offers a lively, adults-only atmosphere with “Vint-Edge” cocktails – unique local libations, and entertainment by some of Hawai‘i’s most famed musicians.

The addition of Edge of Waikiki and the Infinity Edge Pool is part of Sheraton Waikiki’s $187 million hotel-wide upgrade plan to completely modernize its facilities and reaffirm the resort’s place as the hotel destination of choice on O‘ahu.

Concepts for the resort’s renewal plans follow three key words: contemporary, sophisticated and Hawaiian. These planned enhancements bring a new level of comfort and sophistication to the world’s most famous sand and surf destination – Waikīkī Beach.

Volunteers make a difference

On Saturday, October 24, volunteers from Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa joined with others for a Waikiki Beach cleanup.

On Saturday, October 24, 2009, dozens of volunteers from Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa, Waikiki Ohana Workforce, ABC Stores, Hilton Grand Vacations, Marriott Hotel, Boy Scouts from Kaneohe, Tokai Univer- sity, Sacred Hearts Academy High School, Kapiolani Community College, and Hilton Hawaiian Village gathered near the Duke Kahanamoku Statue for an early morning beach cleanup. The two and one half hour litter cleanup spanned Waikiki from Kai- mana Beach to Hilton Hawaiian Village. Items removed included paper, cigarette butts, and empty bottles. The volunteer project was in honor of Make A Difference Day, a national day of service.

“The associates of Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa were thrilled to once again be a part of Make A Difference Day,” says Brad Met- tler, director of marketing Hyatt Regency Wai- kiki Beach Resort and Spa. “The combination of working together locally to protect the envi- ronment, while at the same time achieving the goal of beautifying our own beloved Waikiki Beach, makes this event particularly special to all of us.”

Over 57 partially full garbage bags were filled by 9 a.m. The Make A Difference Day beach cleanup is one of a few in which Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa participates each year. The next event will be in spring 2010.

To find out more, or to request to be added to the volunteer list for the next cleanup, please call Laura Witter at (808) 237-6192.

Help Protect and Preserve Waikīkī’s Beaches and Reefs with Reef Watch Waikīkī

Join the Waikīkī Water Watch Volunteers are needed to assist with monthly water quality test days in Waikīkī. Participants have the chance to learn about basic water quality parameters, how they are measured, and what the tests tell us. All are welcome - no prior experience is necessary! Just come prepared to get wet as we collect water samples from near shore. Bring a good attitude, sun protection and potluck dish to share afterwards. Our next water quality test day has been scheduled for Monday, November 9 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon. To RSVP or learn more, please contact Stepha- nie at [email protected].

Honu Heroes Wanted Reef Watch Waikīkī is seeking volunteer docents for a new sea turtle education program in Waikīkī: Pu'uhonua. Pu'uhonua seeks to educate visitors about Hawaii’s sea turtles (a.k.a. honu) and how we can all be “Honu Heroes”. During the 30-minute presentation, you will share information and answer questions on sea turtle lifestyle (diet, life cycle, habitat, behavior) and conservation. This outreach program is designed to encourage good stewardship of honu wherever and whenever they are encountered. To learn more, please contact Steve at [email protected].

Be an Ambassador of Aloha and Promote Good Reef Etiquette As a Reef Ambassador you will help staff the City & County’s information desk known as the “Aloha Kiosk” at the corner of Kapahulu and Kalakaua Avenues. Reef Ambassadors will answer general questions from passersby (both tourists and residents) about the surrounding area. Questions generally relate to information about local attrac- tions, bus routes, and Waikīkī events. In addition to this general information, Reef Ambassadors will also provide visitors with the opportunity to learn a little bit about the marine life they are likely to encounter during their visit and how to be good reef visitors. To learn more, please contact Jen at [email protected].

Hit the Beach with a Purpose “Beach Watchers” are needed to conduct observations along the Waikīkī coastline. Each one-hour survey will as- sess the types of human activities and environmental threats present in the water and on the beach within your selected observation zone. Essentially, you will count and record what people are doing on the beach and in the water. The data collected will be compiled into our Human Use Monitoring Program database, and over time, will create a clearer picture of how human behavior is affecting Waikīkī’s natural resources. Our next volunteer orien- tation is scheduled for Tuesday, November 10 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Waikīkī. To RSVP or learn more, please con- tact Jen at [email protected].

Reef Watch Waikīkī is a project of the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program funded by the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation and the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority’s Natural Resource Program with support from the Waikīkī Improvement Association.
