    2017 Season Review Paul Hampton For the first time in Castleford’s 91 year history as a senior club they finished at the top of the table. After the regular season of 23 games the twelve team league split into the Super 8s at the top, with the bottom four joining with the Championship top four in the Qualifiers to determine promotion and relegation. Castleford finished the regular season at the top, ten points clear and maintained the lead to the end of the season. They were so far in front that the shield was awarded to them after only three games of the seven game series as they could not be caught. We are delighted with the progress being made on the programme, which is being expertly managed by a new member of the RL Cares team, Emma Goldsmith. Emma’s background is in public health and there are some very exciting plans being developed to extend and enhance our fan-focused health services. Here, we aim to integrate ideas from a range of scientific sub disciplines to consider why 5 certain behaviours and cultures (socio-cultural constraints) may exist in sport performance and coaching. Using 6 recent conceptualisations of affordances in ecological dynamics, we explore how socio-cultural constraints may 7 influence an athlete's development and relationship with a performance context. We also highlight how 8 workplace practices eminating from the industrialisation of the nineteenth-century in countries like the UK may 9 have influenced coaching practice and organisational behaviours from that time on.

Here, we aim to integrate ideas from a range of scientific sub-disciplines to consider why certain behaviors and cultures (socio-cultural constraints) may exist in sport performance and coaching. Using recent conceptualizations of affordances in ecological dynamics, we explore how socio-cultural constraints may influence an athlete's development and relationship with a performance context. We also highlight how workplace practices eminating from the industrialization of the nineteenth century in countries such as the UK may have influenced coaching practice and organizational behaviors from that time on. In particular, features such as strict work regimes and rigid role specification may have reduced personal autonomy, de-skilled performers, and induced a “body as machine” philosophy within sporting organizations. These traits could be considered counter to expert performance in sports where creativity and adaptive decision-making are important skills for athletes to possess.
