Unfortunately things have slipped slightly in the last few months and we wish them well in their quest for a top two finish, but that takes nothing away from today’s contest between two passionate, skilful teams. The Tetley’s Challenge Cup tie between the clubs earlier this year was a cracking game and I hope tonight’s encounter gives the spectators the same excitement. Good luck to both teams – enjoy the game! On the way into the stadium today you may have noticed RL restructuring the new sign by the side of the external big screen telling the world that this is the home of Leigh Centurions! COACH’S PAUL ROWLEY TALKS TO DAVE CORNER PARKINSON

Since our last article with Paul, three games have taken place. Here are the thoughts of the boss from each of those, shared with Dave Parkinson.

First, V Keighley: our contact was good, it was aggressive. We applaud the defence. DP: Paul, good to get back on the winners road but probably a game We set some targets defensively and we achieved them. In the modern era to that won't linger long in the memory? get a nil score-line is a pretty remarkable achievement...... PR: No but, 30-nil and that's the important bit and the fact you take the fact that we had Ridyard, Brierley and McNally unable to train with us all week, v Rochdale then you are going to be lacking some fluency in attack. I think that's the easy DP: Last time out was a case for the defence - this was certainly a bit to fix up. case for the attack? I think when you are getting towards play-off football, you've got to be PR: It was a good all round performance to be fair. I think in every facet we challenging your defence and asking questions, checking the mentality you were good and even the points that they got, they got two ugly tries in the have within your dressing room. On that one we got a 10 out of 10. I thought second half and two where they lived off scraps in the first. But even at 12-nil we were pretty unforgiving at times. Defensively we were outstanding. We were down we'd made four clean breaks. It was all the stuff we'd identified too, to very aggressive and dominating so we can take a lot of positives from that. be fair so it showed that we'd got our home work right, that was pleasing. Like you said, probably from a match rating it wasn't the best but a 30-nil We spoke that we'd work hard on our attack and structures. The skill level was score-line is great, defence was good and the attack lacked fluency with some very, very high. We trained really well and we played really well. Everyone had valid reasons so we will go away and work on that. their role and was brave enough, like I spoke about at the beginning of the DP: Let's stick with the positives and that defence on our own line in year, we were brave in how we played and had the energy to play it. I enjoyed the first half, Keighley had the ball for six or seven sets on the watching how we played. The manner in which we executed our skills and got bounce? in those positions was most pleasing. PR:Yeah we looked like we enjoyed that. We took a lot of time off them and DP: There were some sublime periods of skill in that game. PR: Absolutely and there are players that we've brought in to do that sort of thing, we know that they've got it in them but it does take energy and guts. They were good today and the pivots were outstanding. When they play well, we do as a team. I'd also not made a sub by half-time and that was a first. Our defence is coming tough at a good time of year and now our attack has jumped on board too! ...... v Batley DP: Congratulations on another win, that was tough but I'd say convincing by the end? PR: It was definitely convincing if you look at the score-line. Again we had fun in the last ten or fifteen minutes but we certainly had to earn it, especially in the first half in particular. I think a lot of people make the mistake that if they play uphill in the first half, they think that the slope is going to bring them home easily and they all pose different problems and if you don't have the lion's share of possession when you are playing downhill then you are retreating, so its swings and roundabouts. Our boys were tuned in and ready. They played hard and defended really good. They put another good performance up against a good Batley side. They were tough. It was all about building pressure at the right time. We did it when we were going downhill and Batley looked well beaten with twenty minutes to go. We capitalised and had some fun. DP: There was that five minute period before the hour where it was three tries and Batley didn't know what had hit them? PR: Again we showed some good pieces of skill. Ridyard again showed that he is class. He is class all over. He isn't the only one but he is something special within a good team. We are doing well and Batley would have been very highly motivated because they are teetering on the edge of a cliff with regards relegation. We faced a highly motivated and well drilled Batley and we dismantled them to come away with a strong and convincing win.

hooker this year, Penkywicz has been in sparkling form and a regular pick in the Kingstone Press Championship Team of the Week. “There is a great team spirit here and a lot of local lads, many of whom I've played with or against during my career," he said. "I admit that last year it probably took me six months to get used to things at Leigh with a new coach in Paul Rowley and different training drills. But after so long at Halifax, that's not really surprising.” The 32-year-old Leigh-born former Leigh East junior joined his hometown club from Halifax after the 2012 season. He made a total of 88 Super League appearances for Halifax and Huddersfield between 2000 and 2005 and has also represented Wales at international level. Prior to joining Leigh he was consistently one of the outstanding players in the Championship for Halifax and he went through the 300-game career milestone earlier this season, having passed the 100-tries mark during 2012. This year Penkywicz has been a stand-out player during Leigh's record-breaking run but he says the Tetley's Challenge Cup quarter final defeat against still bugs him. “We ran Leeds, one of the best teams in Super League so close,” he said. “I still think we could have won that game and it was so disappointing when they got home at the end.” He played for both Leigh Miners and Leigh East as a junior and “Penkywicz is playing, he always murders us.” has great memories of watching his dad Phil (a former BARLA international forward) play for East at the old Grasmere Street It's a standard phrase in press boxes around the ground.
