SINGLE CAMPAIGN MEDALS x1 HONOURABLE EAST INDIA COMPANY MEDAL FOR SERINGAPATAM 1799, silver-gilt, 48mm., Soho Mint (From the East India Company to Valentine Conolly) naming inscribed on the edge in contemporary serif capitals, fitted with small ring for suspension, good very fine £1500-2000 Valentine Conolly was appointed Assistant Surgeon in the Madras Medical Service on 16 June 1788 and Surgeon on 1 June 1796. He took part in the Fourth Mysore War and was present at the capture of Seringapatam in 1799. Conolly founded the Madras Lunatic Asylum in 1793 and set in train both a lucrative business and a procedure for the disposal of insane persons, which was regarded as most humane and judicious by the authorities. The accounts praising Conolly’s achievements are divided between mentions of personal profit on the one hand and public benevolence on the other. He retired in February 1803 and on his return to England he had accumulated great wealth and was acknowledged as one of those formerly less well-off Englishmen who returned from India as wealthy nabobs. He settled down in London, comfortably seeing his five sons through education in prestigious colleges and thus preparing them for promising careers - as military officers and members of the civil service in India. Before embarkation Conolly had sold the asylum buildings for three times the premises’ estimated value to another medical practitioner who expected the asylum to be a good enough income source to enable him to imitate his predecessor’s rise to fortune. Valentine Conolly died in London on 2 December 1819. 2 NAVAL GENERAL SERVICE 1793-1840, 1 clasp, Acre 30 May 1799 (William Swanson.) with a good length of original ribbon, dark toned, minor edge bruising, otherwise good very fine and scarce £3500-4000 A total of 40 clasps issued for ‘Acre 30 May 1799’, including 8 single clasp medals, and only 3 clasps to this ship which was not present at any other actions that qualified for a clasp to the N.G.S. medal. William Swanson is confirmed on the rolls as an Able Seaman aboard H.M.S. Alliance at the defence of Acre. The Alliance was formerly the Dutch frigate Alliantie, launched in Amsterdam in 1788. She was captured by H.M.S. Stag on 22 August 1795 in an action off the coast of Danish Norway and taken into the service of the Royal Navy as H.M.S. Alliance. She was commissioned as a storeship of 22 guns in December 1795. Alliance, Captain D. Wilmot, formed part of Captain Sir Thomas Troubridge’s squadron which arrived at Alexandria on 2 February 1799, and then proceeded to Acre, in Syria, where she arrived on 24 March, with orders from Troubridge to discharge her cargo and return immediately to Alexandria. However, upon her arrival, Alliance was commandeered by Sir Sydney Smith and actively employed in the defence of the town of Acre. In April 1799 Sir Sydney Smith anchored Tigre and Theseus, one on each side of the town, so their broadsides could assist the defence. Alliance and some gun-vessels he had captured were of shallower draft and so could come in closer. In spite of the fire from the ships, gun-vessels and the ramparts, the French made repeated assaults on the town which were repelled with great gallantry. However, on 8 April, Captain Wilmot, of the Alliance, received a mortal shot through the neck as he gallantly mounted a howitzer on the breach in the wall of the town of Acre. Additionally, Alliance had three men wounded on the day before. The French pushed on their approaches

    Captain Bligh's Second Voyage to the South Sea By Ida Lee Captain Bligh's Second Voyage To The South Sea CHAPTER I. THE SHIPS LEAVE ENGLAND. On Wednesday, August 3rd, 1791, Captain Bligh left England for the second time in search of the breadfruit. The "Providence" and the "Assistant" sailed from Spithead in fine weather, the wind being fair and the sea calm. As they passed down the Channel the Portland Lights were visible on the 4th, and on the following day the land about the Start. Here an English frigate standing after them proved to be H.M.S. "Winchelsea" bound for Plymouth, and those on board the "Providence" and "Assistant" sent off their last shore letters by the King's ship. A strange sail was sighted on the 9th which soon afterwards hoisted Dutch colours, and on the loth a Swedish brig passed them on her way from Alicante to Gothenburg. Black clouds hung above the horizon throughout the next day threatening a storm which burst over the ships on the 12th, with thunder and very vivid lightning. When it had abated a spell of fine weather set in and good progress was made by both vessels. Another ship was seen on the 15th, and after the "Providence" had fired a gun to bring her to, was found to be a Portuguese schooner making for Cork. On this day "to encourage the people to be alert in executing their duty and to keep them in good health," Captain Bligh ordered them "to keep three watches, but the master himself to keep none so as to be ready for all calls".

Part 1 of a Collection of Officer Casualties. 1. A Scarce Casualty British War Medal to 2nd Lieutenant C.E.P. Ballard of 1st Battalion, Welsh Guards. British War Medal named to 2nd Lieutenant C.E.P. Ballard. Second Lieutenant Charles Edward Penfold Ballard was killed in action on 10th March 1918, whilst serving with 1st Battalion, Welsh Guards, aged 49, he is buried at Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux. Ballard was born on 1st November 1867 the son of George Henry Ballard and his wife Sarah, he had worked as a clerk for The London County and Westminster Bank at the London Holland Park Branch, he left his position at the bank to join the Army in December 1916, and first went to France in August 1917, before being killed on 10th March 1918. https://www.rbsremembers.com/remembers/our- fallen/b/charles-ballard.html . With folder of research including service papers, notification of his burial from the War Office, and copy war diaries, in which the entry for 10th March 1918 covers a raid on German trenches, Ballard appears to have been killed whilst trying to retrieve the wounded from no-mans land after the raid under heavy machine gun fire.

    Athens Journal of Humanities & Arts - Volume 7, Issue 2, April 2020 – Pages 105-120 The Bounty᾽s Primogeniture and the Thursday-Friday Conundrum By Donald Albert* This is a biography of an obscure individual born of the ashes of the H.M.A.S. Bounty on the remote, inaccessible, and uninhabited Pitcairn Island in 1790. Thursday October Christian is best known to amateur and professional historians, philatelists, and others interested in the romance and adventure of the South Seas. He was eighteen years old when he first had contact with the outside world with the arrival of the American sealer Mayhew Folger of the Topaz in 1808. In the forty years of his life he would meet, greet, and otherwise interact with sealers, whalers, naval officers, traders, and others calling on Pitcairn. This article synthesizes these disparate encounters while exploring a name change conundrum revolving around the protagonist. Thursday October Christian was an ordinary person whose life story now lingers in disparate reports, notices, and accounts of archived and otherwise rare documents. Introduction On 28 April 1789 Fletcher Christian mutinied against Lieutenant Bligh, commander of the Bounty. Fletcher forced Bligh and eighteen crew into the Bounty᾽s launch around Tofua. Miraculously, Bligh sailed almost 6,000 kilometers to the Dutch settlement of Coupang, Timor. Fletcher and the mutineers, eventually (January 1790) encountered the mischarted, remote, and wave-inundated cliffs of Pitcairn Island (25o 04’ S, 130o 06’ W) in the South Pacific Ocean (Figure 1). 1 Fletcher Christian located Pitcairn Island even though his source had it located 342 km west from its actual location.2 The *Professor, Sam Houston State University, USA.
