They designed over 250 buildings throughout Indianapolis, the Midwest, and Florida. The firm's well-known works include: Old City Hall, Indiana Theater, Circle Tower, Circle Theater, and the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Plant. Preston C. Rubush was born in Fairfield, Indiana in 1867. In 1887, he enrolled in the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana's Builders program. Rubush came to Indianapolis in 1890 to work with the architectural firm of Adolph Scherrer and W. Scott Moore. Edgar O. Hunter was born in Versailles, Indiana in 1873. Hunter was the brother of another popular Indianapolis architect, Frank B. Hunter. Edgar Hunter received his architectural training at the University of Pennsylvania. Previous to joining Rubush, Hunter returned to Indianapolis in 1897 to work with the firm Vonnegut and Bohn. The first iteration of the firm, Scharn & Rubush, was organized in 1893. J.H. Scharn retired in 1900, and the firm became known as P.C. Rubush & Co. Rubush managed the firm by himself until Edgar O. Hunter joined him in 1905, when the firm was renamed Rubush & Hunter. Carl G. Fisher commissioned Rubush & Hunter to create a luxury resort on land around Miami Beach which Fisher had purchased on speculation. Following the success of that commission, Rubush & Hunter were asked to design buildings for Hollywood-by-the-Sea, a planned community. The project included residences, a commercial strip, a church, and a school; a hurricane in 1926 destroyed most of the community. Following the Florida commissions, Rubush & Hunter returned focus on Indianapolis commissions between 1920 and 1939. This includes work in Garfield Park, Rhodius Park, the United Brethren Church, the Brookside Park Masonic Temple, an addition to the Murat Temple, the Columbia Club, and numerous single-family residences and apartment buildings. The Great Depression challenged the firm's ability to attract larger projects, and the American Central Life Insurance Building was the last major commercial commission for the firm in 1931. Additions to the considerable Coca Cola Bottling Plant on Massachusetts Avenue occurred in 1936-1937, 1940, and 1948. Philip Weisenburgh took over as chief draftsman upon Rubush's & Hunter's retirements in 1940. Weisenburgh is attributed to many of the Florida commissions as supervisor. Although it is not known precisely when Weisenburgh joined the firm, he appears to be the chief draftsman by 1925. The partners retired in Florida; P.C. Rubush died in 1947 and E.O. Hunter died two years later. Sources: Casler, Patricia J. "The Architecture of Rubush and Hunter." Master's Thesis, Columbia University, 1985. General Collection: NA 737 .R85 1985 Greiff, Glory-June.
