******************************************************************************************** The Spring Pilgrimage will feature special opportunities at historic sites deeply associated with Benjamin Harrison as well as -area sites connected to the lives of other early political leaders of the Hoosier state. Harrison, the 23rd President of the United States and the only one elected from Indiana, was designated an Honorary Member of The Society of Indiana Pioneers in 2006. You will see the Harrison Presidential Site as you’ve never seen it before. We also will visit several sites in the historic Lockerbie neighborhood. In addition, the day will include a private tour of scenic , the burial site of President Harrison, three U.S. vice presidents (more than any other cemetery in the country), and other distinguished . At Crown Hill, we will visit the Pioneer Cemetery, which includes graves moved from several “lost” burial sites of early Indiana settlers.

 Enjoy a continental breakfast and welcome in the Carriage House at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, 1230 North Delaware Street, Indianapolis.  At the Italianate home, where President Harrison lived before and after his years (1888-1892), you will get a taste of the classes that thousands of Indiana school children experience every year in their visits to the Presidential Site; the Curator will share some items from the collection that are rarely shown to the public; Pioneers will have an early look at the newest exhibit scheduled to open on Presidents Day, February 17; and you will get an inside look at the satellite garden of vintage species of peonies at the Site being tended by volunteer Master Gardeners under the careful supervision of researchers at the University of Michigan.  Tour Crown Hill Cemetery, the burial site of President Harrison and other prominent as well as infamous Hoosiers. With cemetery historian Tom Davis, we also will visit the Pioneer Cemetery, which includes graves moved from several “lost” burial sites, including Green Lawn Cemetery (the first major graveyard in the Hoosier capital) and a pioneer cemetery in the Castleton area.  At the Indianapolis Museum of Art, visit the Tiffany stained glass window commissioned upon the death of Benjamin Harrison in 1901 by his second wife, Mary Lord Harrison. The historic window, titled “Angel of the Resurrection”, initially was installed at First Presbyterian Church, where the president had served as an elder for more than 40 years.  Savor a luncheon at the Columbia Club on Monument Circle. Although the prestigious club’s ornate, 10-story building opened in the 1920s, the Columbia Club organized decades earlier as a marching society to support the presidential campaign of Harrison in1887.  The courtroom of the Indiana Supreme Court in the Indiana State Capitol will be opened to us for a special presentation about the cases Benjamin Harrison argued as a lawyer, both before and after his presidency. He was widely acclaimed for his skills as an orator.  Visit the oldest private home in Indianapolis, a house in the Lockerbie neighborhood built during the 1820s as a residence for Gov. James B. Ray and his family. We will be the guests of current homeowners Patsy and Robert Cram.  Enjoy a walking tour of Lockerbie, one of the first historic neighborhoods in the Hoosier capital to be fully restored. Guides will be pilgrimage chairman Nelson Price and award-winning architect and historic preservationist Jim Kienle, a Lockerbie resident for more than 35 years.  Enjoy wine and cheese in the new visitor’s center at the Riley Home, the carefully preserved residence of the poet who drew international attention to Indiana at the turn of the last century. We also will tour the home of the legendary “Hoosier Poet”.

Arrive: 8 am promptly at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, 1230 N. Delaware. Ample free parking is available in the lot at the NE corner of North Delaware and 13th streets (Knights of Columbus lot). Proceed to the Carriage House in back (west) of the historic home. Transportation to various sites during the day will be aboard motor coach. Return: 6 pm to the Harrison Presidential Site.
