  • Forgiveness and Repentance in Islam As-Salaam
Forgiveness and Repentance in Islam As-Salaam 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh. Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah It is said: “To err is human and to forgive is divine.” Islam speaks about two elements of forgiveness: a) God’s forgiveness; and b) Human forgiveness. We need both because we do wrong in our relations to God as well as in our relations to one another. There are many names of God given in the Qur’an. They are called “Most beautiful names” and they indicate many different and diverse attributes and qualities of God. Some of these names are related to His mercy and forgiveness. Let us look at some of these names: 1. Al-Ghafoor (The Most Forgiving): This name occurs in the Qur’an more than 70 times. There are other names from the same root, such as Ghafir and Ghaffar. The meaning of the Arabic word “ghafara” is to cover, to hide and from it comes the meaning “to excuse,” “to pardon,” “to remit” and “to forgive.” God does all these things. In the Qur’an, it is mentioned that God does not forgive the Shirk (without repentance) but He may forgive every other sin for whomsoever He wills (4:116). We must turn to God to seek His forgiveness. 2. Al-`Afuw (The Pardoner): This has another part of forgiveness. This name occurs in the Qur’an five times. Literally, the word ‘Afw means “to release,” “to heal,” “to restore,” “to remit.” Thus in relation to God, it means “to release us from the burden of punishment due to our sins and mistakes; to restore our honour after we have dishonoured ourselves by committing sins and making mistakes.” Sometimes in the Qur’an both names, Afuw and Ghafoor, come together.

  • Obstacles to Repentance
2 | Repentance in Islam: The Interdependence of Spirituality & Practice Author Biography Roohi Tahir has a BS with honors in Computer Engineering from Boston University, is a graduate of the BMAIS higher Bridge to Masters diploma, and is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Islamic Studies from the Islamic Online University. She is also the Founder and instructor of Nourish Your Soul, a platform for Islamic education. 3 | Repentance in Islam: The Interdependence of Spirituality & Practice Abstract While the general notion of repentance may be familiar to most, the Islamic concept of repentance is far less familiar and is often the subject of misconceptions and doubt. Repentance plays a central role in Islam and is comprehensive in nature. Deeply rooted within the belief system, it manifests in multiple dimensions—as the core of Islamic theology (aqeedah), as a subject of jurisprudence or rulings (fiqh), and ultimately in practice as an act of worship (‘ibadah). Equally important are the spiritual and self-purification (tazkiyah) aspects of repentance which reside in the heart. This paper specifically addresses how to repent, with a focus on two key dimensions of repentance (tawba)—the spiritual and the practical. It describes the necessary steps to tawba, its many benefits, and a number of commonly faced obstacles. The paper discusses the symbiotic relationship between the spiritual and practical components. It further emphasizes the holistic nature and distinct features of tawba as a source of optimism for every sinner and believer alike, and as a way of life, necessary for success in this world and in the Hereafter. Introduction In order to appreciate the central role of tawba (repentance in Islam) and its powerful impact on society as a whole, we need look no further than the who personified Islam ﷺ methodology and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad was guided ﷺ to a level of excellence we strive to emulate.

Freamon* INTRODUCTION Religion is the mother of war. Conflicts involving religion are among the most intractable of human disputes. Yet, until recently, wars motivated or influenced by religious ideologies have been confined to small well-defined theaters. Europe’s Thirty Years War, which ended in 1648, appears to be the only exception in the modern history of warfare.1 Indeed, in the last three millennia the world has seen much war but it has not seen a full-scale religious war of global proportions since the end of the Crusades. There is reason to believe that this state of affairs is about to change. The horrific attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, as well as the Western military incursion in Afghanistan, the invasion and conquest of Iraq, and continuing Islamist guerilla attacks and terrorist violence against military and civilian targets in a variety of countries with signifi- cant Muslim populations makes one wonder whether the West2 * Professor of Law and Director, Program for the Study of Law in the Middle East, Seton Hall Law School. INFORMATION TO USERS This reproduction was made from a copy of a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this document, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help clarify markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark, it is an indication of either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, duplicate copy, or copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed. For blurred pages, a good image of the page can be found in the adjacent frame. If copyrighted materials were deleted, a target note will appear listing the pages in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photographed, a definite method of “sectioning” the material has been followed. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete.

I hope that this message will reach you, and that you, the family, and all the brothers are in health and prosperity from Allah almighty. Please inform me of your condition and the brothers, in-laws, and offspring. I apologize for the delay in sending messages to you, due to security issues seen by the brothers accompanying me and which may last, whereby there will be a message every several months, so please excuse me in that regard, knowing that all of us, praise Allah, are in good condition and health, and hopefully things will ease up and I will be able to meet you and benefit from your opinions. I was following up with the brothers your kind words in supporting people of the right, and confronting people of the evil, which an observer would find as a positive development, Allah reward you and make that in your good deeds balance, due to performing that great duty. Please inform me about the conditions on your side and your future programs, and provide me with your opinions and counsel. - I present to you a very important subject that needs great effort to remove ambiguity around the subject of the Islamic state of Iraq (ISI), since there is easier contact between you, the media, and the information network, so you have to plug that Page 2 gap, whereby the main axis for your work plan in the coming stage would be the continued support for the truthful Mujahidin in Iraq headed by our brothers in ISI, and defending them should be the core issue and should take the lion’s share and the top priority in your speeches and statements, and mobilizing people, and uncovering the opponents’ conspiracies in an open and clear manner, in other words, your support for ISI must be overt and obvious.

ISSN 1554-3897 AFRICAN JOURNAL OF CRIMINOLOGY & JUSTICE STUDIES: AJCJS; Volume 2, No. 2, November 2006 Crime, Punishment, And Justice Among Muslim Inmates (The Meaning of Crime and Punishment to Muslim Inmates and Its Policy Implications) Nawal H. Ammar Dean & Professor Faculty of Criminology, Justice and Policy, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Oshawa, Canada. Robert R. Weaver Professor Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Oshawa, Canada. ABSTRACT This study explores how incarcerated Muslim men understand crime and punishment from their religion’s perspective. It analyzes responses to open-ended questions posed in a mail survey delivered to Muslim inmates from Ohio State prisons. The inmates’ understanding of concepts such as crime, punishment, repentance, reconciliation, and forgiveness is then compared to the “normative” textual explanations to better understand the religious experiences of Muslims in U.S. prisons. The results suggest that more moderate or “normative” religious education might help counter extremist interpretations of Islamic texts and, correspondingly, reduce the prospects of terrorist-related activities. 64 Crime, Punishment, And Justice Among Muslim Inmates Nawal H. Ammar & Robert R. Weaver There is an emerging literature on religion in prison.
