City Rhythm The Artistry of Stan Kenton
Stan Kenton is one of the most influential figures to be found in jazz history. Although he had many swing era hits, such as Eager Beaver and Intermission Riff, the sound of his music was far different from the most popular bands. It pushed the limits of chord structure and his larger brass section gave his ensemble a special power and intensity.
After the big band era ended, Kenton continued to reimagine the band. With the aide of gifted arrangers such as Pete Rugolo, Bill Holman and Johnny Richards, Kenton remained innovative and relevant his entire career. One of his most famous experiments was the Mellophonium Band of 1960- 1963. Despite the complexities of maintaining the additional horn section, this ensemble had many exciting moments. The albums “Adventures in Jazz” and “West Side Story” won Grammy awards in 1962 and 1963.
City Rhythm is one of very few bands in the world to develop a complete retrospective of Kenton’s work. The show includes all the hits from the 1940’s, but also delves into the broader repertoire. With a full 23-piece ensemble, the orchestra presents the original orchestrations obtained from the Kenton Library. Selections from “Cuban Fire”, “West Side Story” and other acclaimed albums, are played with remarkable precision and authenticity.
This concert is truly a unique and thrilling event for all music lovers.
