Nov 2014 REPs 17 TwoManagers top pros from the fitness industry tell us how it is. Tim Dorrington General Manager, Talise Fitness, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Dubai. In what ways has the role of the club manager evolved since you entered the industry? It used to revolve around ensuring that the general administrative, scheduling and day to day operations were running smoothly. Nowadays however and especially in my current role, it involves looking at the ‘bigger picture’ in a more strategic manner, specifically: • Driving profitability of the club via membership sales, PT, events and activities. • Improving member experiences and helping them to achieve their aspirations via colleague engagement, daily interaction and improved services and facilities. • Supporting and enhancing colleague growth via training, recognition and daily support. In general industry terms, it’s always a challenge to keep up with the ever changing trends, as we constantly need to adapt and evolve our facilities and services to ensure that we are aligned with the latest industry innovations. As challenging as managing a team at your gym is, how important is managing your own fitness for you? For me it’s essential. Not only does it set a good example to my team and our Club members, it also helps to keep me mentally switched-on and productive throughout the day. In addition, it allows me to monitor our facilities on a daily basis, which keeps me connected with the experience that our members have whilst using the facilities. We often see Managers here who don’t ‘walk the talk’ and don’t look as fit as the lifestyle they promote. How true is this? I think the fitness industry is the same as any other industry in that if you are selling or promoting something, whether it be health, fitness, beauty, hair or skin products then there is ‘Originally from England, Tim, 33, moved to Dubai an expectation from the customer that you are a reflection of in 2004 after gaining a BSc Honors Degree in Leisure what you are selling or promoting. This typically involves

18 REPs Nov 2014 Managers in Focus in a thirty minute HIIT cardio sessionFocus in the morning before I start work (three times weekly) and then a 60-minute resistance training session in the afternoon (five times weekly). When I can I will also try and fit in an RPM class during the weekends. With a growing surge of group fitness classes here, is there any one in particular that you endorse? Why? Over the summer I started doing the Les Mills GRIT classes, which really added variety to my workouts and helped me to achieve my goals. They are short (30 minutes), intense and simple sessions and really help set you up for the day. The format of the class makes it great for people who don’t necessarily have a lot of time. List the challenges you face in evolving your club’s brand in a competitive environment? We are in the process of making the transition from a hotel only fitness brand to a slightly more commercial business model. As we continue to standardise our operations across our four Talise Fitness Clubs here in Dubai (Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Madinat Jumeirah, Jumeirah Emirates Towers and Burj Al Arab), we learn new things all the time and are constantly adapting in order to appeal to the market and stay in line with the industry trends. The great thing about the fitness industry is that it’s growing all the time and is very competitive; however this competitiveness is a great thing for the people in Dubai as it pushes not only us, but all other clubs to perform better and improve our offering to our members. What managerial skill has proved the most useful when dealing with a difficult member of your team? I have always found it beneficial to treat each situation based on its own merit. I do not believe there is a single golden rule when dealing with staff issues and the ability to tailor your approach both to the person concerned and the situation in front of you normally allows you to resolve the issue. In addition, after working my way through various roles throughout my career, my background allows me to relate to all of the staff that works in my team, as at one point in my career I have been in their position and am therefore able to understand the issue and work with them to resolve it. What nutrition regime do you follow? Is there a diet in particular that you espouse? Located in one of Dubai’s finest luxury hotels, Talise For me personally, I do not believe in ‘dieting’ as such, more Fitness at Jumeirah Beach Hotel is an inspiring health club in eating healthily whenever possible. I have been at OptimalFITNESS since the beginning of my career so I can’t speak for someone who has been part of a larger commercial gym. As challenging as managing a team at your gym is, how important is managing your own fitness for you? My personal fitness regimen is the most important part of my day. I train two to three hours, five days a week. I am a sponsored athlete and aerial performer, so I have to focus a lot of energy and commit a few hours of my day to my own athletic pursuits. It can be challenging to find time to train, so I split my work day up to ensure that I can always get my workouts in. We often see managers here who don’t ‘walk the talk’ and don’t look as fit as the lifestyle they promote. How true is this for you? I can’t speak for everyone, but I believe it is important to train and remain knowledgeable about training and nutrition. If you manage a gym you will face fitness related questions every day, I personally believe you should be able to provide your members with an answer. I also think the staff of a gym should promote the healthy lifestyles they encourage by being role models to their clients.

Describe a typical day’s workout for you? In a nutshell, one and a half hours of either a gym session or aerial training (hoop, net or pole), followed by another hour of conditioning work and contortionism training. With a growing surge of group fitness classes here, is there any one in particular that you endorse? Why? Of course! I’m all for the aerial arts. n 1956, world-renowned biochemist, Dr. Roger Williams published his book – Biochemical Individuality. In it he put forward the idea that individuality pervades every part of the human body. In many respects, it was thinking like his that laid a foundation for explaining things, like why low fat diets cause some people to gain weight, and why some people get cancer from certain eating habits, iwhile others don’t. His work also inspired the search for methods of identifying people’s differences. The goal of these was ultimately to formulate more specific interventions to enhance health, tackle disease, and boost performance. The Metabolic Typing Diet One of the academics who did a good job of that was William L. Wolcott. In 2000, he published a book called The Metabolic Typing Diet. In it he consolidated the ideas of Dr. Williams and went on to define, what he considered Ryan and Sean, The Wellness Brothers being, a comprehensive and dynamic system of precisely identifying personal dietary needs. At that time, what Wolcott produced was regarded as the ‘next wave’ in nutritional science. In principle, I like what Wolcott did by emphasising the importance of differentiating people’s specific nutritional requirements. In the same breath, though, I do think the accuracy of his method has been overstated. The good news is that, fifteen years on from Metabolic Typing, science and technology have provided us with a verifiably more accurate assessment method, namely, gene testing. Gene testing Following on the discoveries from the ‘Human Genome Project’, in which researches identified and mapped the approximately 25,000 genes that make up the entire human DNA code, research continues into the relationship between genes and lifestyle. Newer findings and cutting- edge molecular technologies have made it possible to provide individuals with important information about their genetic make-up. In summary – advances in gene testing have made the powerful principle of personalisation much more meaningful due to the precision of the method and the practical nature of the interventions that can be made. What this basically means for people, like you, me, and our clients, is a significant reduction in guess work in the process of finding the diet, exercise, or supplement plan that best fits. Lifestyle and genes A helpful explanation as to how this all works was offered by Yael Joffe, a registered dietician and co-author of a book on diet, lifestyle, and genes. The way Yael describes it is like this. “There are about three billion letters in your DNA code and in certain portions of the population a ‘spelling change’ occurs. This can change the code for a specific amino

22 REPs Nov 2014 Get DNA-Fit acid in the body, which can subsequently change a protein and the way it functions. These spelling changes are not all bad, but they can have an impact on hormone and enzyme function. This is what can affect a person’s response to food or exercise.” The small ‘spelling change’ that Yael describes is known as a ‘Single Nucleotide Polymorphism’ (SNP). These are what make us different and change the way we respond to different elements. As such, once a person’s SNPs have been identified, their specific DNA can be interpreted and translated into suitable diet, exercise, or supplement interventions. For all the complexity it’s actually quite straightforward. In saying all that, it is right for me to acknowledge that gene testing is still a relatively new thing. However, I think you’d have to be intentionally blind not to see its potential for a field like ours. Consider, as an example, one of the four DNA profiles Sean and I work with; the one I have in mind is the DNA-Fit. The DNA-fit The DNA-Fit considers a total of 22 genes, 13 of which identify power and endurance potential. These particular genes are known to influence physiological factors, such as vascular control, muscle fibre composition, strength, cardiac output, muscle metabolism, and adaptability to training regimes. The other 9 markers that make up this test are used to determine recovery potential and risk of injury. The tendon pathology component of the test, for example, examines three genetic variations involved in the structural integrity of soft tissues in the body and implicates predispositions to tendon injuries. Ligament, cartilage and bone pathology are also included. According to Ian Craig, an exercise physiologist and nutritional therapist, who actually helped develop and pilot DNA-Fit, the challenge for coaches and sports science practitioners is that, even though they may be well acquainted with the scientific theories around fitness, they don’t always know precisely how to apply them to suit individual needs and genetic differences. This is where a test, like the DNA-Fit, comes into its own. By enabling health and fitness professionals to dig deeply and accurately into the details of their client’s make-up, they can bypass a lot of the trial and error and get right into properly personalising training for maximal performance and recovery. It truly is an exciting prospect. All we need is a swab from the inside of the cheek To wrap up, I think we can agree that the principle of finding the right program for the right person is helpful but not new. People, like Dr. Roger Williams and William Wolcott were on that page well before we got there. The difference between us and them comes in the form of our modern-day advantage. New technology and updated scientific research is what enables us to dig deeper and more precisely into individuality than ever before. An added bonus to that is the ease of access we have to the technology and information. All we actually need is a swab from the inside of the cheek which can be sent off to the properly equipped lab. From there, it’s a matter of waiting for the comprehensive report for guidance in designing the kinds of eating, movement, and supplement plans that line up with genetic and biochemical individuality. I think that gene testing gives us a glimpse of the future of health and fitness. We may as well make the most of it early on. Ryan Penny The Wellness Brothers www.thewellnessbrothers.com ■

The man who made it possible… The trainer, Halem says… I have been training Rasha for almost a year now. Before Rasha came to me she had already lost a huge amount of weight but she wanted to keep pushing and lose more in order to achieve her ultimate goal. I remember when we first sat down and talked about what she would like to achieve from her training and I could see how serious and determined she was to lose the excess weight and to achieve the body she desired. How does rasha train? She works hard and trains in the gym twice a day– morning and evening. You will often find her on the Stepper and we sometimes catch her making a few dance moves whilst at it! During our initial discussions, Rasha felt that she was at a plateau stage of her weight loss goal and this formed the basis of our training programme. What did we do different? • Since meeting Rasha we have been training three times per week. One of the main focus’s was to switch things up a little and change the style and intensity of her workouts in order to help her push through the plateau stage that she was at. • Our workouts included high intensity cardio circuits including kick boxing, combat ropes as well as ViPR. • We also mixed in resistance training targeting the large muscles groups utilizing compound exercises such as barbell squats, clean and presses, dead lifts, pushups and pull ups. “I no longer walk in the shadow of the past. For instance, it was said of a certain figure skater, “She does one thousand crunches every day!” What did I do? I did one thousand crunches. Did I look like her afterwards? No, but I was in a pain for days afterwards. I was following the wrong people I started running when I found out an actress I admired ran. What happened? I pushed myself way too far one evening and ended up with a bizarre heart murmur that would mysteriously come and go. I started doing two hours of cardio a day and I even managed Lena at her heaviest three hours on one occasion. Did I resemble a Hollywood stick figure? No. But I managed to make myself ill for three months. Was overtraining killing my progress? Quite plainly, overtraining occurs when the amount of exercise we do goes beyond our capacity to recover from it. Pushing yourself too hard is way more common than most people would realise. There is a drive in many of us when we’re just starting out to want to move beyond the ‘beginner’ level. We want to push ourselves into the ‘advanced’ category as quickly as possible, and get fitter and better and we want it now. But it isn’t just newcomers to fitness who push themselves too far. Professionals make the same mistakes! I’ve often seen seasoned athletes over-train. Bodybuilders are often guilty of overtraining when they are preparing for a contest. They feel they need to work as hard as possible to be as ripped as possible, when in reality they should be looking to tone down their exertion levels because they’re taking in fewer calories during Lena in progress their pre-contest diet.

Many fitness pros are expanding their remit to embrace downstream business opportunities like fitness franchises that any dynamic fitness pro with a penchant for business can be inspired by and make money from. WHAT IS FRANCHISING? Franchising is a method of distributing products or services. At least two levels of people are involved in a franchise system: (1) the franchisor, who lends his trademark or trade name and a business system; and (2) the franchisee, who pays a royalty and often an initial fee for the right to do business under the franchisor’s name and system. Food allergy vs. food intolerance Even though allergies and food intolerances may cause similar symptoms, there is a major difference between the two. A food allergy is an immune system response and tends to produce acute symptoms. A food intolerance is caused by the lack of enzymes needed to digest food; which often leads to chronic illness, including inflammation. Food allergy occurs when the immune system reacts to a food by creating IgE antibodies. If this same food is again consumed, these antibodies cue the immune system to release an arsenal of chemicals (e.g., histamine), which then trigger a variety of allergic symptoms including asthma, hives, inflammation, skin rashes, mood swings, headaches and heart palpitations. Nov 2014 REPs 53 The Natural Treatments Even The Pros Rate IT WORKED Michelle Nazaroff, Founder Nazafit Online Fitness and Nutrition Say no to surgery After being diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis I was told that I needed open-heart surgery to replace my aortic valve with a mechanical valve. This surgery would result in life long medication, which would not allow me to continue natural body-building with any intensity as it was not recommended. What I chose instead I chose an alternative surgery called the Ross procedure where the outcome post surgery was far better for a female athlete and I would require only one aspirin per day there after. This procedure allowed me to resume full training within eight weeks and I went from not having the strength to open a small bottle of water to 18 months later rebuilding my body from within and winning the INBA World Natural Bodybuilding Olympia Title.

Juliette Alexander, Membership & Club Co-Ordinator, REPs UAE Eating healthy and keeping fit has always been a priority for me from a young age; however I have battled with many illnesses along the way. Therefore it is imperative for me to take vitamin supplements to improve my overall wellbeing. Since being hospitalised over the summer and being put on many strains of antibiotics for a long period, I needed to replace the bacteria that these had killed. Ultimate Flora Probiotics are a must-have supplement that I take daily. They also help boost your immune system and ward off infection. A good high potency multi vitamin is also essential for optimal fitness as well as vitality.

54 REPs Nov 2014 The Natural Treatments Even The Pros Rate

Catherine HansonFOR Farid, ME PR & Marketing Director, REPs UAE I am not a fan of allopathic treatments, as all they do is place a ‘band-aid’ on the issue with a prescription or over-the- counter medicine, which I avoid. When you get sick it’s your bodies’ way of communicating to you, so to find that underlying cause; my choice would be to consult a Naturopath. My home remedy for ear infections Antibiotics are handed out like candy and unless my life depended on it, I wouldn’t take them. They cause an in-balance in our gut flora and set us up for many other health issues. Colloidal silver has been known as an effective natural anti-biotic for centuries so I always have a bottle of that at hand. When my daughter suffered from ear infections I found the best way to cure them was using garlic and olive oil. I add a clove of garlic to olive oil and then warm the oil just so it’s lukewarm and so the oil is infused with the garlic. I then add a few drops inside the ear then wait several minutes to let the oil go down the ear canal. I have used this method and it definitely works. Natural remedy for colds I haven’t had a cold in a couple of years now as I have come across a great natural way to nip it in the bud before it develops. The important thing is to do this as soon as you feel that scratchy sore throat. When you get that feeling just put a few drops of 3 percent Hydrogen Peroxide (you can buy at chemists) into each ear. You will hear a crackling sound which is completely normal. Wait until the bubbling subsides (usually 5-10 minutes) then drain onto a tissue and repeat in the other ear. I swear by this one. The number one way to avoid any kind of illness in the first place is to ensure you have a strong immune system, which is my main objective. Keeping my Vitamin D levels at optimal (between 60-70ngl/ml), getting enough sleep (bed by 10), NOT over-exercising, avoiding sugar and avoiding stress are my ‘live by’ rules. ■
