Abstract Various human groups have greatly affected the processes and evolution of Middle Rio Grande Basin ecosystems, especially riparian zones, from A.D. 1540 to the present. Overgrazing, clear-cutting, irrigation farming, fire suppression, intensive hunting, and introduction of exotic plants have combined with droughts and floods to bring about environmental and associated cultural changes in the Basin. As a result of these changes, public laws were passed and agencies created to rectify or mitigate various environmental problems in the region. Although restoration and remedial programs have improved the overall “health” of Basin ecosystems, most old and new environmental problems persist. TIMMERMANN 2Kansas Biological Survey, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, USA 3Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis, MO, USA 4Department of Surgery, University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS, USA 5Department of Medicinal Chemistry, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, USA *Corresponding author; e-mail: [email protected] The Ethnobotany and Ethnopharmacology of Wild Tomatillos, Physalis longifolia Nutt., and Related Physalis Species: A Review. The wild tomatillo, Physalis longifolia Nutt., and related species have been important wild-harvested foods and medicinal plants. This paper reviews their traditional use as food and medicine; it also discusses taxonomic difficulties and provides information on recent medicinal chemistry discoveries within this and related species. Subtle morphological differences recognized by taxonomists to distinguish this species from closely related taxa can be confusing to botanists and ethnobotanists, and many of these differences are not considered to be important by indigenous people. Therefore, the food and medicinal uses reported here include information for P. longifolia, as well as uses for several related taxa found north of Mexico. The importance of wild Physalis species as food is reported by many tribes, and its long history of use is evidenced by frequent discovery in archaeological sites. These plants may have been cultivated, or “tended,” by Pueblo farmers and other tribes. The importance of this plant as medicine is made evident through its historical ethnobotanical use, information in recent literature on Physalis species pharmacology, and our Native Medicinal Plant Research Program’s recent discovery of 14 new natural products, some of which have potent anti-cancer activity. -

Phillips, Jr. Maxwell Museum of Anthropology Department of Anthropology MSC01 1050, 1 University of New Mexico Albuquerque, NM 87131 USA Elizabeth Arwen Bagwell Desert Archaeology, Inc. 509 South 48th Street, Suite 104 Tempe, Arizona 85281 USA Abstract Understanding Paquimé’s internal development is important to regional prehistory, but the sheer amount of published data deters attempts to interpret the site’s construction history. The challenge can be reduced to a workable size by examining individual architectural units within the site. By way of illustration, a re-study of Unit 11 (House of the Serpent) indicates that its construction history may differ somewhat from the original published account. The approach used in the re-study is frankly experimental and is offered in the hope that others will be able to improve on it (or else prove its lack of utility). Three decades ago, in the most influential report ever prepared on northwest Mexican prehistory, Charles Di Peso and his colleagues described Paquimé (Di Peso 1974; Di Peso et al. 1974; see also Contreras 1985). Since then, the site’s construction history has received little detailed attention. Instead, recent discussions have focused on dating the site as a whole (End Note) or on the presence or absence of a multistory “east wing” (Lekson 1999a:80; 1999b; Phillips and Bagwell 2001; Wilcox 1999). In recent years, the most detailed studies of Casas Grandes construction have come from other Casas Grandes sites (Bagwell 2004; Kelley et al. -

Phillips, Jr., Ph.D. Principal Investigator ARCHAEOLOGY NOTES 77 SANTA FE 1992 NEW MEXICO ADMINISTRATIVE SUMMARY Between June 29 and July 10, 1987, the Office of Archaeological Studies, Museum of New Mexico, conducted excavations at LA 58973, along New Mexico State Highway 528 near Codes and Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Data from the testing phase of this project (March 17-20, 1987) suggested that there weresubstantial archaeological remains within the proposed right-of-way, consisting of several hearth features and artifacts associated with a possible pit structure. Excavations indicate the presence of three basin-shaped unlined hearth features andan associated scatter of ground stone and fire-cracked rock. The pit structure depression, on private land, was not investigated. Two ephemeral charcoal stains and a scatter of isolated artifacts within the right-of-way were determined to be surficial. Submitted in fulfillment of Joint Powers Agreement DO4322 between the New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Departmentand the Officeof Archaeological Studies, Museum of New Mexico. Humans construct humanity and personhood partially via interactions with other-than-human persons, such as animals, plants, and objects. I examine ritualized interactions between humans and others-than-human in a southeastern Indigenous "natureculture," exploring the intersections of ontology, personhood, and performance practice. Pvlvcekolv, an animistic Florida-based tribal town with a ceremonial Fire that pre-dates European Contact, maintains a centuries-old ritual tradition, the busk. Sometimes known as "Green Corn Ceremonialism," many Native communities share this tradition, including ii Cherokee, Chickasaw, Seminole, Yuchi, and other Creek peoples historically and in the present day. Performing the songs, dances, and ritual actions of the busk places participants into dialogue with other-than-human persons. -

Las regiones son: oasisamérica, aridoamérica y mesoamérica Los horizontes que la componen son: arqueolítico, cenolítico inferior, cenolítico superior, protoneolítico, oasisamérica, aridoamérica, mesoamérica y los primeros contactos en el s. XVI: Planteamiento que se hace de esta manera para una mejor comprensión del curso y entender la evolución de los grupos asentados en territorio mexicano. 2.Fundamentación. Las área culturales del México Antiguo no solo se reduce a Mesoamérica como el período de máximo florecimiento que le antecedió a la conquista. En otros tiempos, antes de conocerse esta macroárea cultural, llegaron diversos grupos de cazadores-recolectores nómadas. El proceso evolutivo de estos grupos fue largo y lento, permitiendo avanzar e ir tocando diferentes niveles de desarrollo y los conocimientos necesarios para el cultivo y domesticación de las plantas como uno de los descubrimientos mas importantes durante esta fase que cambio el curso de la historia. Otra de las regiones es la llamada Oasisamérica localizada al sw de E.U. y norte de México, compuesta por grupos sedentarios agrícolas pero con una complejidad similar a la Mesoamericana. El área denominada mesoamérica, espacio donde interactuaron y se desarrollaron diversos grupos culturales, fue la “…sede de la mas alta civilización de la América precolombina. (Niederbeger, 11, 1996), se desarrollo en la mayor parte del territorio mexicano. Mesoamérica, definida así por Kirchhoff en 1943, es punto de referencia no solo para estudiosos del período prehispánico, en el convergen diversos especialistas amparados en diferentes corrientes ideológicas y enfoques: antropólogos, geógrafos prehistoriadores, historiadores, sociólogos, arquitectos, biólogos, sociólogos, por mencionar a algunos. -
