Wesolowski Dr. Dennis Trout, Dissertation Supervisor ABSTRACT This dissertation examines three intersections of plants and desire in the pastoral literature of Theocritus, Virgil, and Longus. First, the locus amoenus describes a pleasing botanical place that can create a narrative frame around depictions of desire or can inspire desire itself. The visuality of the descriptions of loca amoena is then compared with examples from Roman landscape wall painting, which provide fictional representations of plants that can physically create a space in which desires can be inspired, enunciated, or acted upon. Second, inversions of nature, adynata, in pastoral literature offer a way for the herdsmen to imagine an impossible botanically based desire being fulfilled when their actual (usually erotic) desire cannot be. Adynata can be expanded to impossible ultra-lush Golden Age imagery. This imagery reminds the reader of the Roman wall paintings at Prima Porta and Oplontis, which are reconsidered as adynata. The final intersection of desire and plants occurs in a pastoral and botanical variation on magic, by which the practitioner can attempt to alleviate a desire. This chapter, which culminates in a reevaluation of Idyll 11, shows that although plants and desire are intimately linked with magic, the one true way to remedy a desire is to take control of one‘s own emotions and not dwell on what is not attainable. The botanical world, then, functions alongside the frustrated desires and within the controlling fictions vii of loca amoena, adynata, and magic in the pastoral literature of Theocritus, Virgil, and Longus. viii Chapter 1: Introduction Pastoral, unlike other categories of literature, is unique because it asks the reader to inhabit the natural, outside world with its subject. In no other type of literature is the natural world foregrounded more. Because of this, plants and the botanical world gain importance and add additional layers of meaning to the pastoral writing of Theocritus, Virgil, and Longus. Instead of looking at individual plants in isolation, this dissertation examines three broader contexts in which plants appear, namely, loca amoena, adynata, and magic, and their relationship with desire in the pastoral writing of Theocritus, Virgil, and Longus.1 The loca amoena describe locations which frame the enunciation of desires of characters, and adynata in pastoral literature allow the one who desires to imagine a world which he can control and in which he can bring about impossible changes. This imagined world can be made to correspond both positively and negatively to the human condition and seems to provide a momentary escape from the desires at hand. Magic echoes the escapism found in the adynata by providing a tangible means to attempt to alleviate and escape desires. Thus the major botanical contexts can frame a desire or they can be means

In the Libanian corpus itself, different genres require differences of matter and treatment which are to be observed not merely in a comparison of orations, declamations and letters, but in any assessment of the orations themselves 2). The broad outline of Libanius' course is essentially that re­ c'ommended long before by Dio Chrysostom and Quintilian, and even then of tried utility and venerable antiquity 3).

To interpret as camp is to not only account for the excesses of style that often infuriate and discompose aesthetic and generic categories of the time period, although it can provide an explanatory motive for noticeably disruptive and even flamboyant literary style. A camp reading can also bring together seemingly disparate texts under the umbrella of alterity. It provides an ideal and common language for discussing formal and generic literary styles alongside feminist, queer, and cultural interpretations. Camp in the eighteenth century is particularly well-positioned to make important contributions to ongoing discussions about the public sphere, the shifts in audience and reception among all media, and the influences of realism, especially relating to the bourgeois representations of affects and emotions. To me, camp is a parodic project, which means that it must bear a symbiotic relationship to the normative text or value that it plays up. Its parody is reliant on those modes opposed as “other” to their marginalized selves; in my examples, the target ranges among the heteronormative family, the orderly body, the sexual object, temporal mastery, aesthetic ownership, sentimental empathy, and even the self.

This elegant and simple production, the earliest from the pen of the eminent poet and novelist of Spain, pour- traying young, fresh, and vivid scintillations of genius, has never been translated into any language. We have only its shadow in the French production of Florian, which is based on the Spanish story, and though written in an en- gaging and graceful style, is not that mature and elegant child of the brain of Cervantes which is now for the first time presented to the English reader.

These comparisonsallow us to de- tect the possible contribution of different chronologicalperiods to what ap- pearsto be a cumulative,composite picture of around700 B.c.Homeric drink- ing practicesare of particularinterest in relation to the history of drinkingin the Aegean. By analyzing social and ideological attitudes to drinking in the epics in light of the archaeologicalrecord, we gain insight into both the pre- history of the epics and the prehistoryof drinkingitself. THE HOMERIC FEAST There is an impressive amount of what may generally be understood as feasting in the Homeric epics.' Feasting appears as arguably the single most frequent activity in the Odysseyand, apart from fighting, also in the Iliad. It is clearly not only an activity of Homeric heroes, but also one that helps demonstrate that they are indeed heroes. Thus, it seems, they are shown doing it at every opportunity,to the extent that much sense of real- ism is sometimes lost-just as a small child will invariablypicture a king wearing a crown, no matter how unsuitable the circumstances. In Iliad 9, for instance, Odysseus participates in two full-scale feasts in quick suc- cession in the course of a single night: first in Agamemnon's shelter (II. 1. thanks to John Bennet, My 9.89-92), and almost immediately afterward in the shelter of Achilles Peter Haarer,and Andrew Sherrattfor Later in the same on their return from their coming to my rescueon variouspoints (9.199-222).
