Index | 2019 ISIC Association Annual Report In 2019, we continued to focus on further developing and improving our A combined message from digital solutions. The emphasis on creating the digital ISIC has always been to provide a more user-friendly and easier access to the ISIC itself, the ISIC Association Board as well as to partners, and a much wider range of benefits and advantag- es. Evidence of the success of this is that more students now hold and Chair, and the Head of actively use a digital ISIC than ever before. Operations at the ISO In recent months, we have all had to face unprecedented challenges that 2019 marked a significant shift in our global operations, both meta- have and will continue to test us all in the ISIC community. Yet, this has phorically and in a practical sense. We began by declaring the need presented all issuers with a chance to demonstrate the resilience of the and desire to facilitate more collaboration between issuers around ISIC and how we can continue to stand strong and potentially even thrive the world during our annual ISIC Event in Thessaloniki. (the ISO) based in Belgrade, Serbia. In doing so we took on a new team, all of whom have dedicated a massive amount of time and June 2020 effort in learning and getting up to speed with the ISIC world. Since the beginning, more than 65 years ago, the ISIC has had to constant- ly adapt to a continually changing landscape. Thanks to our ability and desire to do so, sixty-seven years later, we are still here and still relevant to millions of students each year. Typically change comes with its challenges and some will adapt a little faster, or a little slower than others. However, as in life, if an ultimate objective is shared amongst peers, what matters in the end is that everyone is working together to reach and achieve the same goal. Our community believes in making student life better, so that is what we aim to do every day. The most we can say is that the economy has stopped getting worse so quickly. In such economic straits, it is heartening to see that Amadeus’ business remains resilient: in 2008 Amadeus’ revenue grew by 2.2% compared with 2007, to EUR 2,861.4m*. The remarkable drop in travel demand – especially at the high-yield, business-class end of the market – has reinforced my belief in the fundamental value of a travel distribution system which connects travel providers with their customers efficiently and reliably. Amadeus’ total travel bookings fell by 2.1% year-on-year to 526.6m but travel agency air bookings grew slightly, by 0.6%, to 364.2m. This was achieved in a declining market largely thanks to a 1.7 percentage point gain in market share; Amadeus retains the number one position in travel agency air bookings made through a GDS in 2008 with a market share of 35.6%. We continue to diversify our business and, to help the market track our progress in this respect, we have begun to report the number of passengers carried by airlines using at least two modules of Amadeus’ Altéa Customer Management Solution (CMS).
