In his tenth World Championship finale in a row, the defending rallycross World Champion missed yet another podium finish by 0.4 seconds. In the overall standings, the Swede still holds second behind compatriot Johan Kristoffersson. In the teams’ classification EKS is third at the half-way stage of the season. Ekström made a flying start around the rollercoaster track in Norway. Despite torrential rain, the Swede coped the best with the slippery track at the wheel of his Audi S1 EKS RX quattro, and led the overall classification after the first day. “I was a little surprised that we were so fast in the wet, but that was quattro weather,” joked Ekström after the final. “In the dry conditions on Sunday, we struggled again to match the pace of the competition. In the final we lost crucial ground right at the start. This was our own mistake and this ultimately cost us the podium finish.” Although Ekström leaves Norway without a trophy, he still scored 23 important points for the overall standings. After six of twelve rounds, the World Champion is eight points behind the leading VW driver Johan Kristoffersson.

At the ninth round in Lohéac, the reigning World Champion finished third – the first podium result since his victory in Hockenheim last May. In front of 75,000 spectators, the Swede was only beaten in the final by his countryman Johan Kristoffersson and the French local matador Sébastien Loeb. In the overall standings, Ekström is third behind Kristoffersson and his team mate Petter Solberg – also like EKS in the team classification. Following heavy rain, the final race in Brittany became a mud festival featuring many overtaking moves. “Saturday sun and Sunday rather more swimming and sliding, a varied weekend,” confirmed Ekström. “I’m actually quite satisfied with my third place, but I’m a little annoyed because we weren’t so far from the front. In the dry and in the rain we were just missing a tiny bit, but we can certainly build on the performance.” In Lohéac, Ekström’s team mates Reinis Nitišs and Toomas Heikkinen once again made the semi- final races for the twelve fastest drivers, but drew the short straw at this stage. “After contact with Andreas Bakkerud my wipers stopped working, from there on I was running blind,” summarized Nitišs and added: “I’m disappointed with the result because it doesn’t show our real performance.” Heikkinen missed the final after a collision with Ken Block.

Any hopes of a podium finish were however destroyed by a slow puncture. The Finn was fifth in the end. Mattias Ekström was forced to retire in the semi-final with clutch problems. In the overall standings, the reigning Rallycross World Champion still holds third – as does EKS in the teams’ classification. In the only overseas race, torrential rain transformed the street circuit into a lake and quagmire on Saturday. Toomas Heikkinen and Mattias Ekström defied the adverse conditions to hold second and fourth place respectively after the first day. “Saturday was a good start, even if we didn’t have the paces of the two Polos of Johan Kristoffersson and Petter Solberg,” said Ekström. “Things also started very well on Sunday in the dry.” The Swede had qualified third for the final races for the best twelve drivers, and started from the front row. A problem with the clutch initially dropped him back, before he had to park his Audi S1 EKS RX quattro on the penultimate lap without drive.

Mattias Ekström, Toomas Heikkinen and Reinis Nitišs have big aims for the event on November 11 and 12, shooting for their fifth win this season and the teams’ vice-championship title. Ekström himself is aiming to become vice-champion in the drivers’ classification as well. South Africa is hosting a World RX round for the first time this year. The construction project of the World RX track at Killarney International Raceway was launched in 2016. In the season’s finale at the foot of the impressive Table Mountain, Audi driver Mattias Ekström is going to battle for position two in the drivers’ championship. Before the last race, the Swede has a one- point deficit to overall runner-up Petter Solberg. “Becoming ‘best of the rest’ isn’t bad either,” says Ekström. “We’re going to give this our all in South Africa.” In the battle for second place in the teams’ championship, Ekström and Heikkinen are trailing Team Peugeot Hansen by 28 points. The event in the Swedish province of Värmland is both the home round for EKS and a big motorsport party. The organizers expect some 45,000 spectators to turn out for the “Magic Weekend” from June 30 to July 2. One of the protagonists, though, will be missing: Mattias Ekström. The Swedish Audi factory driver passes up his home round in favor of the DTM round at the Norisring. His compatriot P-G Andersson will stand in for him. “In Höljes, I won in 2014 and 2015. It goes without saying that I’d have liked to clinch my third big trophy there,” says the reigning Rallycross World Champion. “But the DTM has priority and, regrettably, I can’t split myself in half. Fortunately, my boss, Dieter Gass, made the decision for me.” His Swedish compatriot P-G Andersson will take Ekström’s place in Höljes. The 2004 and 2007 Junior Rally World Champion is no stranger to the World RX. In 2014, he debuted in the 560-hp Audi S1 EKS RX quattro at the World RX round in Turkey. In the 2015 season, the now 37-year- old Andersson contested ten rounds in a VW Polo for Marklund Motorsport, scoring a fourth place in Belgium as his best result.
