Audi and EKS: Points Instead of Podium
Audi MediaInfo Communications Motorsport Virginia Brusch Tel: +49 841 89-41753 E-mail: [email protected] www.audi -mediacenter.com/en Audi and EKS: points instead of podium • Mattias Ekström takes fourth place in Norway • Rallycross World Champion remains second in overall standings • Ekström: “Mistake at the start cost us the podium finish” Hell, June 11, 2017 – Mattias Ekström took fourth place at the sixth round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship 2017 in Hell. In his tenth World Championship finale in a row, the defending rallycross World Champion missed yet another podium finish by 0.4 seconds. In the overall standings, the Swede still holds second behind compatriot Johan Kristoffersson. In the teams’ classification EKS is third at the half-way stage of the season. Ekström made a flying start around the rollercoaster track in Norway. Despite torrential rain, the Swede coped the best with the slippery track at the wheel of his Audi S1 EKS RX quattro, and led the overall classification after the first day. “I was a little surprised that we were so fast in the wet, but that was quattro weather,” joked Ekström after the final. “In the dry conditions on Sunday, we struggled again to match the pace of the competition. In the final we lost crucial ground right at the start. This was our own mistake and this ultimately cost us the podium finish.” Although Ekström leaves Norway without a trophy, he still scored 23 important points for the overall standings. After six of twelve rounds, the World Champion is eight points behind the leading VW driver Johan Kristoffersson. -
Audi Driver Ekström on Podium After Pouring Rain
Audi MediaInfo Motorsport Communications Virginia Brusch Phone: +49 841 89-41753 E-mail: [email protected] www.audi -mediacenter.com/en Audi driver Ekström on podium after pouring rain • FIA World Rallycross Champion Mattias Ekström finishes third in Lohéac • Audi DTM driver Nico Müller celebrates impressive rallycross debut Lohéac/Neuburg, September 3, 2017 – Mattias Ekström is back on the road to success in the FIA World Rallycross Championship. At the ninth round in Lohéac, the reigning World Champion finished third – the first podium result since his victory in Hockenheim last May. In front of 75,000 spectators, the Swede was only beaten in the final by his countryman Johan Kristoffersson and the French local matador Sébastien Loeb. In the overall standings, Ekström is third behind Kristoffersson and his team mate Petter Solberg – also like EKS in the team classification. Following heavy rain, the final race in Brittany became a mud festival featuring many overtaking moves. “Saturday sun and Sunday rather more swimming and sliding, a varied weekend,” confirmed Ekström. “I’m actually quite satisfied with my third place, but I’m a little annoyed because we weren’t so far from the front. In the dry and in the rain we were just missing a tiny bit, but we can certainly build on the performance.” In Lohéac, Ekström’s team mates Reinis Nitišs and Toomas Heikkinen once again made the semi- final races for the twelve fastest drivers, but drew the short straw at this stage. “After contact with Andreas Bakkerud my wipers stopped working, from there on I was running blind,” summarized Nitišs and added: “I’m disappointed with the result because it doesn’t show our real performance.” Heikkinen missed the final after a collision with Ken Block. -
No Happy End for Audi and EKS in Canada
Audi MediaInfo Communications Motorsport Virginia Brusch Tel: +49 841 89-41753 E-mail: [email protected] www.audi -mediacenter.com/en No happy end for Audi and EKS in Canada • Toomas Heikkinen takes fifth place in the Rallycross World Championship • World Champion Ekström retains third place in the overall standings • Ekström: “A good weekend until the semi-final” Trois-Rivières/Neuburg, August 6, 2017 – Toomas Heikkinen continued his streak in the eighth round of FIA World Rallycross Championship in Trois-Rivières by reaching the final in Canada for the fourth time in succession – a record. Any hopes of a podium finish were however destroyed by a slow puncture. The Finn was fifth in the end. Mattias Ekström was forced to retire in the semi-final with clutch problems. In the overall standings, the reigning Rallycross World Champion still holds third – as does EKS in the teams’ classification. In the only overseas race, torrential rain transformed the street circuit into a lake and quagmire on Saturday. Toomas Heikkinen and Mattias Ekström defied the adverse conditions to hold second and fourth place respectively after the first day. “Saturday was a good start, even if we didn’t have the paces of the two Polos of Johan Kristoffersson and Petter Solberg,” said Ekström. “Things also started very well on Sunday in the dry.” The Swede had qualified third for the final races for the best twelve drivers, and started from the front row. A problem with the clutch initially dropped him back, before he had to park his Audi S1 EKS RX quattro on the penultimate lap without drive. -

World RX Finale: Audi and EKS to Battle for Two Vice-Championship Titles in South Africa
Audi MediaInfo Communications Motorsport Virginia Brusch Tel: +49 841 89-41753 E-mail: [email protected] www.audi -mediacenter.com/en World RX finale: Audi and EKS to battle for two vice-championship titles in South Africa • Drivers’ championship: Mattias Ekström sets sights on position two • Teams’ championship: EKS shoots for second place • New rallycross circuit in Cape Town new ground for all drivers Neuburg a. d. Donau/Cape Town, November 7, 2017 – The finale of the 2017 FIA World Rallycross Championship season will take place in Cape Town this weekend. Mattias Ekström, Toomas Heikkinen and Reinis Nitišs have big aims for the event on November 11 and 12, shooting for their fifth win this season and the teams’ vice-championship title. Ekström himself is aiming to become vice-champion in the drivers’ classification as well. South Africa is hosting a World RX round for the first time this year. The construction project of the World RX track at Killarney International Raceway was launched in 2016. In the season’s finale at the foot of the impressive Table Mountain, Audi driver Mattias Ekström is going to battle for position two in the drivers’ championship. Before the last race, the Swede has a one- point deficit to overall runner-up Petter Solberg. “Becoming ‘best of the rest’ isn’t bad either,” says Ekström. “We’re going to give this our all in South Africa.” In the battle for second place in the teams’ championship, Ekström and Heikkinen are trailing Team Peugeot Hansen by 28 points. A team can score a maximum of 56 points on a race weekend. -

Consequently, Audi Sport, in addition to its commitments in Formula E and the DTM, will be competing in the FIA World Rallycross Championship as well. Longstanding Audi factory driver Mattias Ekström founded EKS in early 2014, subsequently leading the squad to the top of the world’s standings with great personal commitment within the space of only three years. In the 2016 season, Ekström and EKS in the all-wheel-drive Audi S1 EKS RX quattro won both the drivers’ and the teams’ world championships against strong competitors from Ford, Peugeot, Volkswagen and numerous privateer teams. “We realized that it was becoming increasingly difficult for EKS to stand its ground against the factory teams, so we decided to intensify our commitment in the World RX,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass. Thanks to factory help from AUDI AG, the EKS project can continue. -
