St. Gregory of Nyssa: His Contribution to Christian Philosophy Longino Rutagwelera Department of Philosophy & Ethics The Archbishop James University College, Songea, Tanzania Abstract St. Gregory of Nyssa contributed enormously to the understanding of the ancillary role of philosophy in relation to Christian Theology. He understood that philosophy is at the behest of theology in the sense that philosophy serves as an instrument for explaining the mystery that constitutes the subject matter of theology and for rendering it understandable to the finite human intellect. He is one of several who elucidated the instrumental role of Platonism and Neoplatonism for expounding the Christian deposits of faith in such areas as the Holy Trinity, Christology, Creation and the Eschatological Universal Restoration of all human beings. This paper analyses his understanding of contemplation and its role in the process of attaining knowledge. It also critically analyses human freedom, the abuse of which, from his point of view, is the origin of evil. The paper shows the current relevance of philosophy and the timeliness of philosophy’s service as an instrument in order to make faith in general and religious practices in particular not only understandable but also justifiable. The contemporary world is one that experiences the mushrooming of religions and of Christian denominations and so manifests itself as a world in dire need of critical thinking in order to bring to light the rationale of believing and concretely putting into practice what religions teach. The paper intends to provide a rational stability to the workings of faith by curbing and re-orienting the present day religion-induced fanaticism and radicalism that leave quite insecure human aspirations to peace, integrity and social cohesion. -

Mysticism and Greek Monasticism By JOHANNES RINNE There is reason to assert that Christian mysticism is as old as Christianity itself. In the Pauline epistles, e.g., there are obvious signs of this fact. The later Christian mysticism has, in a high degree, been inspired by these ele- ments and likewise by various corresponding thoughts in the Johannine writings, which traditionally are interpreted from this angle and which have played a central role especially for the Orthodox Church.' In the light of the above-mentioned circumstances, it seems fully natural that there exists, from the very beginning, a clear connection also between mysticism and Christian monasticism. It has been pointed out by certain authors that the role of mystical visions is of essential and decisive significance also as regards the development from the stage of the hermits of the deserts to that form of life which, in the proper sense of the word, is characterised as monastic. There is, generally speaking, no possibility to understand correctly the intentions and the thoughts of the great pioneers of monasticism, unless one takes into account the mystically visionary factors. To this end it is neces- sary, furthermore, to penetrate in an inner, spiritual way, into the holy sym- bolism of the monastic tradition and into the sacred legends of its history.2 In other words, it is necessary to keep constantly in mind the visionary factor and to remember that the pioneers of monastic life, as a rule, are men of which it may be said that they have their conversation in heaven: on the mystical level of vision they converse with the angels as the representatives of the heavenly world and as those organs, by means of which the principles of monastic life are transmitted and given to the men of mystical visions.' The things mentioned above are not merely history. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Saints of the Crusader States: Legends of the Eastern Mediterranean in Anglo-French Vernacular Culture, 1135-1220 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in French and Francophone Studies by Cristina Politano 2018 ã Copyright by Cristina Politano 2018 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Saints of the Crusader States: Legends of the Eastern Mediterranean in Anglo-French Vernacular Culture, 1135-1220 by Cristina Politano Doctor of Philosophy in French and Francophone Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor Zrinka Stahuljak, Chair A corpus of Anglo-French hagiography composed between 1135 and 1220 tells the lives of Biblical and Late Antique women with origins in the eastern Mediterranean: the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene who lived in Jerusalem, Margaret of Antioch, Catherine of Alexandria, and Mary of Egypt. These narratives circulated and gained a popular audience in twelfth- and thirteenth-century Normandy, England, and France. Hagiography scholars have focused on the ways in which vernacular portrayals of female saints reveal medieval ideas of gender; this study evaluates the extent to which ideology is indexed through both the gender and the geographical origin of the saints in question. It considers how the contexts of pilgrimage and crusade offer a new framework for the larger discussion of these texts. What is the nature of the link that twelfth- century Anglo-Norman hagiographers sought to establish with the wider, non-western world? ii An inquiry into the provenance of these legends reveals that their underlying ideology often complicates or contradicts orthodox theological definitions of sainthood elaborated by twelfth- century Christian theologians. -

To Peter the Prince of the Apostles, the divine Founder of the Church allotted the gifts of inerrancy [1] in matters of faith and of union with God. This relationship is similar to that of a "Choir Director of the Choir of the Apostles."[2] He is the common teacher and rector [3] of all, so that he might feed the flock of Him who established His Church [4] on the authority of Peter himself and his successors. And on this mystical rock the foundation [6] of the entire ecclesiastical structure stands firm as on a hinge. From it rises the unity of Christian charity as well as our Christian faith. 2. Indeed the unique gift of Peter's primacy is that he might spread everywhere and preserve the riches of charity and faith, as Ignatius Theophorus, a man of Apostolic times, beautifully declared. Existe, pues, una continuidad de pensamiento entre los Padres como re- presentantes de la autoridad de los Apóstoles y la Biblia. Por este motivo, sería bueno re- conocer cuán profundamente santo Tomás se inspira en el pensamiento de los Padres. Abstract: St. Thomas considers the writings of the Fathers as directly related to Scrip- ture since these were composed under the guiding influence of the same Holy Spirit. There exists therefore a continuity of thought between the Fathers as representatives of the au- thority of the Apostles and the Bible.1 For this reason, one would do well to recognize how deeply St. Thomas draw upon the thought of the Fathers. In this contribution we will present the main themes within the writings of the Alexandrian and Cappadocian Fathers that have influenced St. Thomas’s own thought.2 Key words: Athanasius of Alexandria, Cyril of Alexandria, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, Thomas Aquinas.
