St. Gregory of Nyssa: His Contribution to Christian Philosophy Longino Rutagwelera Department of Philosophy & Ethics The Archbishop James University College, Songea, Tanzania Abstract St. Gregory of Nyssa contributed enormously to the understanding of the ancillary role of philosophy in relation to Christian Theology. He understood that philosophy is at the behest of theology in the sense that philosophy serves as an instrument for explaining the mystery that constitutes the subject matter of theology and for rendering it understandable to the finite human intellect. He is one of several who elucidated the instrumental role of Platonism and Neoplatonism for expounding the Christian deposits of faith in such areas as the Holy Trinity, Christology, Creation and the Eschatological Universal Restoration of all human beings. This paper analyses his understanding of contemplation and its role in the process of attaining knowledge. It also critically analyses human freedom, the abuse of which, from his point of view, is the origin of evil. The paper shows the current relevance of philosophy and the timeliness of philosophy’s service as an instrument in order to make faith in general and religious practices in particular not only understandable but also justifiable. The contemporary world is one that experiences the mushrooming of religions and of Christian denominations and so manifests itself as a world in dire need of critical thinking in order to bring to light the rationale of believing and concretely putting into practice what religions teach. The paper intends to provide a rational stability to the workings of faith by curbing and re-orienting the present day religion-induced fanaticism and radicalism that leave quite insecure human aspirations to peace, integrity and social cohesion. -

Mysticism and Greek Monasticism By JOHANNES RINNE There is reason to assert that Christian mysticism is as old as Christianity itself. In the Pauline epistles, e.g., there are obvious signs of this fact. The later Christian mysticism has, in a high degree, been inspired by these ele- ments and likewise by various corresponding thoughts in the Johannine writings, which traditionally are interpreted from this angle and which have played a central role especially for the Orthodox Church.' In the light of the above-mentioned circumstances, it seems fully natural that there exists, from the very beginning, a clear connection also between mysticism and Christian monasticism. It has been pointed out by certain authors that the role of mystical visions is of essential and decisive significance also as regards the development from the stage of the hermits of the deserts to that form of life which, in the proper sense of the word, is characterised as monastic. There is, generally speaking, no possibility to understand correctly the intentions and the thoughts of the great pioneers of monasticism, unless one takes into account the mystically visionary factors. To this end it is neces- sary, furthermore, to penetrate in an inner, spiritual way, into the holy sym- bolism of the monastic tradition and into the sacred legends of its history.2 In other words, it is necessary to keep constantly in mind the visionary factor and to remember that the pioneers of monastic life, as a rule, are men of which it may be said that they have their conversation in heaven: on the mystical level of vision they converse with the angels as the representatives of the heavenly world and as those organs, by means of which the principles of monastic life are transmitted and given to the men of mystical visions.' John Berger, “Seker Ahmet and the Forest”1 In a review of Kamal Boullata’s 2009 book Palestinian Art: From 1850 to the Present, the critic Jean Fisher noted that “among Boullata’s most stunning insights . is that the crucible of Palestinian modernism is to be found in the Arabisation and progressive naturalisation of Byzantine iconography.”2 But Boullata himself did not follow this course. Instead, the Orthodox icon stimulated him to travel down a path away from the increasing naturalization of figural art toward varieties of abstraction, distilling the nonlinear perspective that lies at the existential heart of Orthodox iconography to create a modern artistic expression of a radically different sort from the Palestinian artists whose work he analyses in his book. Why did he take such a different path? Boullata has frequently observed that his own artistic impulse was first formed by three modes of artistic creation that coexisted in Jerusalem, where he was born and grew up: Byzantine icons, Arabic calligraphy, and Islamic ornament. He has not elaborated on the role of the Orthodox icon except to mention that his first lessons in painting were from the icon painter Khalil Halabi, who taught him to organize the multiple planes of an icon by the use of a grid. In his chapter “Peregrination Between Religious and Secular Painting,” Boullata also mentions “reverse perspective,” which he gleaned from the Byzantine art historian André Grabar, whose teacher in early twentieth-century St. -

St Vladimir’s Th eological Quarterly 59:1 (2015) 43–53 Ignatian and Hesychast Spirituality: Praying Together Tim Noble Some time aft er his work with St Makarios of Corinth (1731–1805) on the compilation of the Philokalia,1 St Nikodimos of the Holy Mountain (1748–1809) worked on a translation of an expanded version of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius Loyola.2 Metropolitan Kallistos Ware has plausibly suggested that the translation may have been motivated by Nikodimos’ intuition that there was something else needed to complement the hesychast tradition, even if only for those whose spiritual mastery was insuffi cient to deal with its demands.3 My interest in this article is to look at the encounters between the hesychast and Ignatian traditions. Clearly, when Nikodimos read Pinamonti’s version of Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises, he found in it something that was reconcilable with his own hesychast practice. What are these elements of agreement and how can two apparently quite distinct traditions be placed side by side? I begin my response with a brief introduction to the two traditions. I will also suggest that spiritual traditions off er the chance for experience to meet experience. Moreover, this experience is in principle available to all, though in practice the benefi ciaries will always be relatively few in number.
