Hawthorne's intensely, provocatively visual literary work in- vites cinematic comparisons. Joining numerous critiques in the field of film criticism, this essay challenges Laura Mulvey's well-known theory of the male gaze, using Hawthorne's work as an example of representation that complicates gendered subject positions vis-à-vis the gaze.1 In his work, Hawthorne makes it impossible to assign clear positions of dominance and submission. In so doing, he offers valu- able contributions to our understanding of the construction and orga- nization of gender and sexuality in the antebellum United States. By rendering male subjects as the objects as well as the wielders of the gaze, Hawthorne insists that we view men as possible objects of erotic contemplation, thereby beckoning queer and feminist analysis. If the radical nature of Hawthorne's work lies, in part, in his in- sistence on rendering male figures the object of multiple gazes, Hawthorne's 1852 novel ZAe Blithedale Romance poses a theoretical dilemma, since its protagonist, the cynical poet Miles Coverdale, clearly wields the gaze: one might even say his chief agenda is eluding the gaze of others by gazing at them first. In this essay, I examine the psychic costs of wielding the gaze, arguing that Hawthorne demon- strates the considerable potential personal risks involved in the avid desire to look, which he never treats as an act or symbol of power but, instead, as the very evidence of the debilitated fragility of the gazer.2 1 132David Greven am not arguing that Hawthorne depicts the phallic gazer as a victim who should be pitied for the patriarchal power he must embody and enact through gazing; this essay eschews any special pleading for the anxious condition of aggrieved American manhood. As Suzanne R. Stewart, in a study of late nineteenth-century masochism and man- hood, writes, "The problem with so many postmodern theories of the subject is the elevation of the failure of subjectivity into a general condition of all subjectivity, a failure that is then celebrated as sub- versive."3 The subversive energy of The Blithedale Romance lies in the manner whereby Hawthorne exposes Coverdale's act of seeming masculine dominance—wielding the gaze, voyeuristically devouring what he sees—as indicative of a hopelessly unsuccessful embodiment of male power. The novel can be read as a critique of developing ante- bellum forms and theories of American masculinity; an evocation of queer threats to it; and as a phobically defensive treatment of the is- sues of effeminacy that personally plagued Hawthorne. Moreover, and more pressingly, I will argue that The Blithedale Romance provides a particular theorization of heteronormative masculinity's relationship to the male gaze. I compare constructions and theorizations of the voyeuristic gaze in Hawthorne, Freud, Lacan, and Alfred Hitchcock, artists and thinkers who all use the voyeuristic gaze as a means of both establishing and deconstructing normative models of patriarchal power. My chief focus is, however, Hawthorne, and in bringing in psychoanalytic and cinematic perspectives, I mean primarily to illuminate his work, particularly in the ways in which his ineluctable conservatism competes with a potential radicalism— his phobic demonizations with a heroic and embattled sensitivity. In this essay, I argue that the voyeuristic male gaze allows Hawthorne to spy on and confront normative forms of manhood and masculinity.4 A Great Deal of Eye-Shot Unlike Fanshawe, Minister Hooper, Feathertop, and Dimmesdale, Miles Coverdale, Blithedale^, cryptic first-person narrator, occupies the position of watcher, "the third man," or "the fourth side."5 If char- acters like Fanshawe and Dimmesdale occupy the position of being the object of the desiring gaze—much like Endymion, the beautiful young man of Greek myth so beautiful that the moon goddess Selene insisted that Zeus cast a perpetual sleep over him so that she could forever gaze upon and caress him—Coverdale wields the gaze, if sur- reptitiously, almost as hidden a voyeuristic viewer as James Stewart's Studies in Amerícan Fiction133 "Jeff in Hitchcock's Rear Window (1954).6 Coverdale enjoys a "rare seclusion" in his "hermitage," a "leafy cave" high up in the branches of a pine tree. The "decay" of branches "lovingly strangled" by "vine" forms this "hollow chamber." Within his little bower, Coverdale counts "the innumerable clusters of my vine," and forereckons "the abundance of my vintage."7 Like Fanshawe, the protagonist of Hawthorne's first novel, he is a ruler in an auto- erotic world of his own. "This hermitage," reveals Coverdale, "sym- bolized my individuality, and aided me in keeping it inviolate" (91-92). Coverdale's declaration firmly establishes that, while he fantasizes about Hollingsworth, Zenobia, and Priscilla, his first thoughts tend towards his own "vine" and "vintage," and the hermitage merely ex- trudes the interior, inviolate individuality into which Coverdale bur- rows. And from this vantage point, Coverdale "peeps," for his position is "loft enough to serve as an observatory," from which he can observe Hollingsworth, Priscilla, and the Blithedale goings-on. Coverdale trans- forms his inviolate sanctuary into a theater in which his scopophilic spectatorship has full voyeuristic reign and range—the self as Panopticon (92-93). 8 Coverdale fetishistically gazes at those around him; the way he looks at Zenobia triggers her to call him on it: "I have been exposed to a great deal of eye-shot ...but never, I think, to precisely such glances as you are in the habit of favoring me with" (44). If, as in Mulvey's account, Coverdale spectacularizes Woman, Zenobia unflinchingly re- turns his gaze, a topic to which we will return. Coverdale's anguished appreciation of Hollingsworth's beauty—coming, as it does, along with a sense that Hollingsworth is neither terribly kind nor trustworthy— appears to translate into onanistic fantasy with self-flagellating (shades of Dimmesdale) repercussions, "exemplifying the kind of error into which my mode of observation was calculated to lead me": In my recollection of his dark and impressive countenance, the features grew more sternly prominent than the reality, duskier in their depth and shadow, and more lurid in their light. ..On meeting him again, I was often filled with remorse, when his deep eyes beamed kindly on me. ..."He is a man after all!" thought I— "his Maker's own truest image ...not that steel engine of the Devil's own contrivance, a philanthropic man!" But, in my wood- walks, and in my silent chamber, the dark face frowned at me again. (66) Sophia Hawthorne knew very well that when Hawthorne referred to a solitary chamber, he evoked onanistic pleasure, one reason why she 134David Greven obliterated references to such "filthiness" in his writing.9 Like the onanist of antebellum health and sexual reformer Sylvester Graham's perfervid imaginings, Coverdale feverishly retreats into private "rec- ollection" in his "silent," secret chamber, where reproduced images of Hollingsworth take on a lurid luster of almost explicitly onanistic and homoerotic fantasy, solidified even in negation by the phallicized qual- ity of what Hollingsworth supposedly is not, a "steel engine."10 It is little wonder that when Coverdale sees Hollingsworth after his soli- tary imaginings, he feels remorse—even less wonder that this para- graph precedes both Coverdale's declaration that he finds Hollingsworth beautiful and the description of Blithedale as a Golden Age that promotes polyamorous amativeness, that authorizes "any individual, of either sex, to fall in love with any other, regardless of what would elsewhere be judged suitable and prudent" (67).

In a letter to his mother when he was seventeen years old, he weighed the possibilities of entering other professions against his inclinations and concluded by asking her what she thought of his becoming a writer. He demonstrated an awareness of some of the disappointments a writer must face by stating that authors are always "poor devils." This realistic attitude was to help him endure the obscurity and lack of reward during the early years of his career. As in many of his letters, he concluded this letter to his mother with a literary reference to describe how he felt about making a decision that would determine how he was to spend his life.1 It was an important decision for him to make, but consciously or unintentionally, he had been pre- paring for such a decision for several years. The build-up to his writing was reading. Although there were no writers on either side of Hawthorne's family, there was a strong appreciation for literature.

Nathaniel Hawthorne's personal family history, his boy- hood in the Salem area of New England, and his reading of works about New England's Puritan era influenced his choice of witch and Devil lore as fictional material. The witch- ci"aft trials in Salem were evidence (in Hawthorne's inter- pretation) of the errors of judgment and popular belief which are ever-present in the human race. He considered the witch and Devil doctrine of the seventeenth century to be indicative of the superstition, fear, and hatred which governs the lives of men even in later centuries. From the excesses of the witch-hunt period of New England history Hawthorne felt moral lessons could be derived. The historical background of witch and Devil lore, while helpful in illustrating moral lessons, is used by Hawthorne to accomplish other purposes. The paraphernalia of witchcraft with its emphasis on terrible and awesome ceremonies or practices such as Black Sabbaths, Devil compacts, image-magic, spells and curses, the Black Man in'the forest, spectral shapes, and familiar spirits is used by Hawthorne to add atmospheric qualities to his fiction. Use of the diabolic creates the effects of horror, suspense, and mystery. Furthermore, such 2 elements of witch and Devil doctrine (when introduced in The Scarlet Letter, short stories, and historical sketches) also provide an aura of historical authenticity, thus adding a v dimension of reality and concreteness to the author's fiction.

Michael Jones Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) is justly famous as one of America’s premier novelists and short story writers. Over a writing career stretching from 1829 until his death, Hawthorne consistently probed the moral and spiritual conficts which he observed in his own life and, mainly, in the lives of the Puritan and Transcendentalist New Englanders with whom he spent most of his life. Both Puritanism and Transcendentalism, of course, deal with the material world and the human body in ways which tend to make them either confict with or irrelevant to the human spirit. Therefore, Hawthorne was never far in his works from a struggle with the fundamental identity of man as a unity of body and soul. As Michael Jones points out below The Blithedale Romance is a novel uniquely situated in Haw- thorne’s life and experience to lend itself to an illuminating examination of the confict within the author about human na- ture. It is quite impossible for me to imagine his bestowing the slightest caress upon Mrs. Hawthorne.” Sophia once commented about her husband that he “hates to be touched more than anyone I ever knew.” Presumably the Hawthornes gave up sexual intercourse for purposes of contraception, or perhaps because they found solitary or mutual masturbation to be more congenial, or perhaps, in Nathaniel’s case, because he preferred to have sex with prostitutes, a social practice of the times which Hawthorne referred to as “his illegitimate embraces,” rather than go to the trouble of arranging “blissful interviews” with his wife.1 Hawthorne was bothered by the presence of children, and after the birth of Rose would speak bitterly of the parent’s “duty to sacrifice all the green margin of our lives to these children” towards which he never felt the slightest “natural partiality”: [T]hey have to prove their claim to all the affection they get; and I believe I could love other people’s children better than mine, if I felt they deserved it more.

Landscapes documented through the CLI are those that individually meet criteria set forth in the National Register of Historic Places such as historic sites, historic designed landscapes, and historic vernacular landscapes or those that are contributing elements of properties that meet the criteria. In addition, landscapes that are managed as cultural resources because of law, policy, or decisions reached through the park planning process even though they do not meet the National Register criteria, are also included in the CLI. The CLI serves three major purposes. First, it provides the means to describe cultural landscapes on an individual or collective basis at the park, regional, or service-wide level. Secondly, it provides a platform to share information about cultural landscapes across programmatic areas and concerns and to integrate related data about these resources into park management.     "Rappaccini's Daughter" - Sources and Names BURTON R. POLLIN RAPPACCINI'S DAUGHTER has always been viewed as one of Hawthorne's strangest and most provocative tales. I should like to consider a few of the possible sources which serve chiefly to under- score the theme of the transformation or re-creation of human life, these being Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Godwin's St. Leon, and Milton's Paradise Lost. Related to the supernatural motif of the story is the meaning in Italian of the names of four major characters. That Hawthorne could not have failed to know Frankenstein has been assumed by R. P. Adams for "The Birthmark." 1Mary Shelley's first work was a celebrated, perhaps even notorious, novel during the period of Hawthorne's early development, and it continued to be popular throughout the century. There were to be at least nine reprints in English of this work of 1818, two of them published in the United States.2 The third edition of 1831, with a long new pre- face by the author, constituted the ninth of the popular "Standard Novels" of Colburne and Bentley.3 Hawthorne probably saw the 1833 Philadelphia reprint by the well-known firm of Carey and Lea, to which he had addressed a request in 1832 concerning an article for the Souvenir, one of its publications.4 Frankenstein is a distinguished specimen of the Gothic tale, a genre which was promi- nent in Hawthorne's reading.5 It has left its traces in The Scarlet 1 R. In traditional romance, the hero takes a mythical journey into the underworLd where he meets and overcomes evil antagonists. Hawthorne has transferred much of that hero's role to a pivotal character whose paradoxical func- tion is to cause the central conflict in the tale or novel while remaining almost entirely passive himself. The movement of the tale or novel depends on the pivot's humanization, that is, his return to and integration within society. I 11 Abstract This thesis explores the use and development of the photographically illustrated novel from a souvenir to a mass-market publication. An examination of three volumes of the Tauchnitz printing of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Marble Faun details how tourists and booksellers adapted the novel through the addition of albumen prints to create a unique souvenir. By 1889, the technological advances in the printing process, the demands of tourism and the photographic selections from the Tauchnitz volumes made it possible for Houghton, Mifflin and Company to publish an illustrated copy of The Marble Faun containing photogravure prints. Like the European title of the book - Transformation or , the Romance ofMonte Beni - this paper demonstrates how the Tauchnitz tourist­ produced souvenir copies of the novel evolved into a mass-market product.
