Abstract: Primarily papers of Julian Hawthorne (correspondence, MSS of his writings and his poetry, journals and notebooks, scrapbooks, clippings, etc.), with a few papers also of his first wife, Minnie (Amelung) Hawthorne, and his second, Edith (Garrigues) Hawthorne. Included also are some papers of Nathaniel Hawthorne, his father; Sophia (Peabody) Hawthorne, his mother; and Una Hawthorne, his sister. The film is positive microfilm copy of Julian Hawthorne material from The J. Pierpont Morgan Library, including a diary, May 1857-Oct. 1859 with sketches; a notebook containing extracts of letters and other material relating to his father, Nathaniel Hawthorne, material relating to the Peabody family, lists of letters, etc.; and a notebook containing notes for some of his novels, clippings, and other material relating to his own writings. Scope and Content The Hawthorne family papers consist primarily of Papers of Julian Hawthorne, with a few papers also of his parents, Nathaniel and Sophia (Peabody) Hawthorne; his sister, Una; and his wives, Minne (Amelung) and Edith (Garrigues) Hawthorne. The greater part of the collection was purchased by the Rare Books and Special Collections Department of the University Library in 1953-1954 from John Howell Books, acting for Albert R. Valliere, to whom the papers had been bequeathed by Mrs. Julian Hawthorne. Other Hawthorne items have been added to the collection; provenance, in each case, indicated on the folder. Papers of Nathaniel Hawthorne Volume 4 Pocket diary, 1858 Scope and Content Note Covering departure for Italy at the conclusion of his consular tour of duty in England and residence in Italy. One page of accounts at the end. Entries for August 5 and 9 and part of entry for December 31 cut out. The cut out portion of the last entry was copied on the page of accounts by G[eorge?] P[arsons?] L[athrop?], March 22, [18]74. Photocopy in Box 1 or Microfilm (BANC FILM 72/236 z, reel 1) to be used in place of the original which has been withdrawn from use because of its fragility.
