Dette dokument afspejler anbefalingerne til Kommunalbestyrelsen. 1. Ser man på infrastrukturen er det gennem en årrække blevet svært at rejse rundt i Kommunen. 2. Det er en udfordring at få vareforsyninger, dyrt og svært at sende varer fra sydgrønland og svært at holde møder osv. Af disse og flere andre årsager er udviklingen gået nærmest i stå. 3. Resultatet har været at der er sket en gradvis en fraflytning. Desuden har personer med højere kompetencer fået gode jobs andre steder. Det er ganske enkelt blevet svært at skabe et livsgrundlag på et personligt plan, for familier og for erhvervslivet. Derfor har man etableret Innovation South Greenland A/S for at skabe vækst, udvikling og rådgivning af iværksættere. En konkret opgave som er blevet givet Innovation South Greenland A/S er at finde en løsning for Narsarsuaq i et nyt scenarie. Det vigtige er imidlertid at se på hele Sydgrønland som en sammenhængende region. Den første forudsætning er at skabe håb og troværdighed. Dernæst at man får en tidssvarende infrastruktur på plads. Ydermere skal der opdyrkes en iværksætterkultur som understøttes af igangsætning af konkrete projekter. Sidst og ikke mindst skal der tiltrækkes investeringer udefra og indgås bilaterale aftaler som kan styrke regionen. Erhvervsudviklingen skal baseres på et tæt samarbejde med Erhvervslivet, Kommunen, Selvstyret og Uddannelsesinstitutionerne i kommunen. -

Hvordan vil kommunens rolle udvikle sig i den samlede tilpasning af det grønlandske samfund til selvstyre? Hvordan kan kommunen tage ud- fordring op med hensyn til at sikre landets fælles mål om at skabe en selvbærende økonomi? Mineral Exploitation and Development in Greenland: Engaging Local Workforce and Planning Flexible Settlements Kåre Hendriksen, Birgitte Hoffmann & Ulrik Jørgensen The key question of the paper is how to plan and organize mining projects in Greenland in ways that involve local workforce and develop business as well as settlement potentials. The paper outlines a concept of flexible settlements with the aim to build a socio-economic sustainable future for Greenland. A major contemporary challenge for Greenland is its economic deficit and dependency on state support from Denmark, to maintain its living standard. The evolving decoupling between existing settlements and the main export industry based on marine living resources re-enforced by new mineral extraction based on a workforce that is working temporarily at the mining sites poses a threat to employment in Greenland. At the same time, attracting mineral resource based industries is key to overcome the economic challenges. Mining companies envisage potentials for a fast extraction of the resources using immigrant and migrant labourers that work intensively while living in temporary quarters. The historic experiences of Greenland tell that a different, slower exploitation of mineral resources may contribute to social improvements and competence-building thereby providing long-term improvements for the Greenlandic society. This point to a need for plans and the organisation of mineral exploitations that operate based on coupling local settlements and resources with mining and other forms of activities. This demands new perspectives on the content of social impact assessments as well as new criteria for the planning of settlements and infrastructures. Introduction The natural mineral and energy resources in Greenland have been researched in detail by Danish state institutions like the Danish Geological Surveys (GEUS) and the former Greenland Technical Organization (GTO) for many years. -

World Heritage Scanned Nomination File Name: 1149.pdf UNESCO Region: EUROPE AND NORTH AMERICA __________________________________________________________________________________________________ SITE NAME: Ilulissat Icefjord DATE OF INSCRIPTION: 7th July 2004 STATE PARTY: DENMARK CRITERIA: N (i) (iii) DECISION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE: Excerpt from the Report of the 28th Session of the World Heritage Committee Criterion (i): The Ilulissat Icefjord is an outstanding example of a stage in the Earth’s history: the last ice age of the Quaternary Period. The ice-stream is one of the fastest (19m per day) and most active in the world. Its annual calving of over 35 cu. km of ice accounts for 10% of the production of all Greenland calf ice, more than any other glacier outside Antarctica. The glacier has been the object of scientific attention for 250 years and, along with its relative ease of accessibility, has significantly added to the understanding of ice-cap glaciology, climate change and related geomorphic processes. Criterion (iii): The combination of a huge ice sheet and a fast moving glacial ice-stream calving into a fjord covered by icebergs is a phenomenon only seen in Greenland and Antarctica. Ilulissat offers both scientists and visitors easy access for close view of the calving glacier front as it cascades down from the ice sheet and into the ice-choked fjord. The wild and highly scenic combination of rock, ice and sea, along with the dramatic sounds produced by the moving ice, combine to present a memorable natural spectacle. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS Located on the west coast of Greenland, 250-km north of the Arctic Circle, Greenland’s Ilulissat Icefjord (40,240-ha) is the sea mouth of Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the few glaciers through which the Greenland ice cap reaches the sea.
