ALVIN W. GOULDNER AND INDUSTRIAL SOCIOLOGY AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY James J. Chriss, Cleveland State University Alvin W Gouldner (1920-1980) was a prolific socicl.ogist of the post-World War II era who spent the early part of his career (the 1950,) in the field of industrial , ociology. A case study of Gouldner's early life and career is useful insofar as it intertwines with the develcyment of industrial sociology as a distinct subfield within sociology. Through this analysis we are also better able to understand how and in what ways a burgeoning orga nizational studi es program develcyed at Ccl.umbia University during the 1940,. This anal ysis of the historical and cultural contexts within which Gouldner came to prcminence as an industrial sociologist at Columbia, and the intellectual program that resulted, can al so help shed light on more r ecent trends in organizational studies.

  • Columbia and American Sociology in a New Light
JHBS—WILEY RIGHT BATCH Top of ID Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences, Vol. 37(1), 27–43 Winter 2001 ᭧ 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. HOW ROBERT M. MACIVER WAS FORGOTTEN: COLUMBIA AND AMERICAN Base of 1st SOCIOLOGY IN A NEW LIGHT, 1929–1950 line of ART ELZ˙ BIETA HAŁAS It is necessary to reevaluate the role of the Department of Sociology at Columbia Uni- versity in the years 1929–1950. The impact of Robert M. MacIver, who played a signif- icant role in the exchange between European and American thinkers, is examined, as well as his marginalization. It is argued that in the 1930s it was characteristic that the sociol- ogists in the centers in Chicago and Columbia exchanged their disciplinary functions. It was MacIver’s Columbia that took on the role of advocate of humanistic sociology and Mead’s and Cooley’s heritage. ᭧ 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. THE FORGOTTEN CHAPTER OF THE INTERWAR SOCIOLOGY The time has come for a reevaluation of the role of the Department of Sociology at Columbia University in the development of sociology and the social sciences in the years 1929–1950. With that reevaluation and an examination of the impact of Robert Morrison MacIver (1882–1970),1 a new configuration in the history of sociological thinking during those two decades emerges. It is commonly believed that American sociology was being shaped until the 1930s by the Chicago School, and after 1940 by functionalism, represented at Columbia by Robert K. Merton and at Harvard by Talcott Parsons (Gans, 1992, pp. 701–710; Wiley, 1979, pp.

  • American Power and International Theory at the Council on Foreign Relations, 1953–54
Revised Pages AMERICAN POWER AND INTERNATIONAL THEORY AT THE COUNCIL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS, 1953– 54 Between December 1953 and June 1954, the elite think tank the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) joined prominent figures in International Relations, including Pennsylvania’s Robert Strausz- Hupé, Yale’s Arnold Wolfers, the Rockefeller Foundation’s Kenneth Thompson, government advisor Dorothy Fosdick, and nuclear strategist William Kaufmann. They spent seven meetings assessing approaches to world politics— from the “realist” theory of Hans Mor- genthau to theories of imperialism of Karl Marx and V. I. Lenin— to discern basic elements of a theory of international relations. The study group’s materials are an indispensable window to the develop- ment of IR theory and illuminate the seeds of the theory- practice nexus in Cold War US foreign policy. Historians of International Relations recently revised the standard narrative of the field’s origins, showing that IR witnessed a sharp turn to theoretical consideration of international politics beginning around 1950 and remained preoccupied with theory. Taking place in 1953– 54, the CFR study group represents a vital snapshot of this shift. This book situates the CFR study group in its historical and historiograph- ical contexts and offers a biographical analysis of the participants. The book includes seven preparatory papers on diverse theoretical approaches, penned by former Berkeley political scientist George A. Lipsky with the digest of dis- cussions from the seven study group meetings. American Power and Interna tional Theory at the Council on Foreign Relations, 1953–54 offers new insights into the early development of IR as well as the thinking of prominent elites in the early years of the Cold War.
