ANAHTAR SÖZCÜKLER: Ele ştirel Sosyoloji , Refleksif Sosyoloji, Marksizm, Akademik Sosyoloji, De ğerden Ba ğımsızlık, Nesnellik ii NAME and SURNAME: BER İVAN B İNAY TITLE : INQUIRE INTO ALVIN WARD GOULDNER’S CRITICAL SOCIOLOGY ABSTRACT After the 1960s Gouldner who has given his initial works on the sociology of industry, tended towards the theory of social theories and carried out critical re-readings of many social theorists from Platon to Weber and from Parsons to Marx. In that sense, the theory of social theories, on the base line, characterizes Gouldner’s critical sociology. However, Gouldner’s tendency towards the theory of social theories is actually a part of his commitment to the ‘sociology of sociology’. He names his idea as ‘reflexive sociology’ since Gouldner does not believe that there is only one ‘sociology of sociology’. The main distinguishing characteristic of Gouldner’s critical sociology is reflexive sociology which is a necessary condition for the sociological effort to become mature. With reflexive sociology Gouldner goes a step forward to expose not only the apparent assumptions of intellectual life but also the assumptions that lie underneath of its substructure. With an ontological analysis on the character of sociology Gouldner aims at deepening the self awareness of sociologist and at the same time aims at a sociology which has a better understanding of other people and their social worlds via trying to show who and what is sociologist, and to show how his social role and his personal praxis affect the work of a sociologist. KEYWORDS: Critical Theory, Reflexive Sociology, Marxism, Academic Sociology, Value Free, Objectivity iii ÖNSÖZ “Sosyoloji nedir ve sosyolog kimdir?” sorusu ilk bakı şta basit ve sıradan bir soru gibi görünebilir. Jay’in yukarıdaki ifadelerinin a ğırlı ğının çalı şmanın her a şamasında hissedildi ğini söyleyebilirim. ALVIN W. GOULDNER AND INDUSTRIAL SOCIOLOGY AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY James J. Chriss, Cleveland State University Alvin W Gouldner (1920-1980) was a prolific socicl.ogist of the post-World War II era who spent the early part of his career (the 1950,) in the field of industrial , ociology. A case study of Gouldner's early life and career is useful insofar as it intertwines with the develcyment of industrial sociology as a distinct subfield within sociology. Through this analysis we are also better able to understand how and in what ways a burgeoning orga nizational studi es program develcyed at Ccl.umbia University during the 1940,. This anal ysis of the historical and cultural contexts within which Gouldner came to prcminence as an industrial sociologist at Columbia, and the intellectual program that resulted, can al so help shed light on more r ecent trends in organizational studies.

MACIVER WAS FORGOTTEN: COLUMBIA AND AMERICAN Base of 1st SOCIOLOGY IN A NEW LIGHT, 1929–1950 line of ART ELZ˙ BIETA HAŁAS It is necessary to reevaluate the role of the Department of Sociology at Columbia Uni- versity in the years 1929–1950. The impact of Robert M. MacIver, who played a signif- icant role in the exchange between European and American thinkers, is examined, as well as his marginalization. It is argued that in the 1930s it was characteristic that the sociol- ogists in the centers in Chicago and Columbia exchanged their disciplinary functions. It was MacIver’s Columbia that took on the role of advocate of humanistic sociology and Mead’s and Cooley’s heritage. ᭧ 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. THE FORGOTTEN CHAPTER OF THE INTERWAR SOCIOLOGY The time has come for a reevaluation of the role of the Department of Sociology at Columbia University in the development of sociology and the social sciences in the years 1929–1950. With that reevaluation and an examination of the impact of Robert Morrison MacIver (1882–1970),1 a new configuration in the history of sociological thinking during those two decades emerges. It is commonly believed that American sociology was being shaped until the 1930s by the Chicago School, and after 1940 by functionalism, represented at Columbia by Robert K. Merton and at Harvard by Talcott Parsons (Gans, 1992, pp. 701–710; Wiley, 1979, pp.
