Chapter 1 Introduction SECOND SCHEDULE EIA FOR THE PROPOSED LOGGING AND OIL PALM PLANTATION AT PT 11675 (854.31 HECTARES) IN MUKIM KERATONG DISTRICT OF ROMPIN, PAHANG DARULMAKMUR CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 TITLE OF PROJECT This Second Schedule Environmental Impact Assessment (S2EIA) Report is for the proposed “Logging and Oil Palm Plantation at PT 11675 (854.31 hectares) in Mukim Keratong District of Rompin, Pahang Darul Makmur” hereinafter referred as “Project”. 1.2 PROJECT LOCATION The proposed project site with an area of 854.31 ha (2111.06 ac) is located at Mukim Keratong, District of Rompin, Pahang as shown in Figure 1-1. This area is owned by a private company; Asyadihan Plantations Sdn. Bhd. (Land Grant in Appendix A). The area has an irregular shaped boundary; thus, the boundary points have been labelled with numbering from 1 to 22. There is also area of bekas lesen which was CR-02-26-16 (KP/K), CR 02-16-17 (TPS) and CR-02-32- 16 (KP)(K) as shown in demarcation plan (Figure 1-2). A survey conducted by the Rompin District Forestry Office in December 2018 found that nearly 780 hectares in the area were protected by less than 30 cm of perepang, while 73.50 hectares still contained productive and economically viable forests with an estimated 5 to 6 tonnes per acre. Design: A qualitative case study was conducted. Pertinent information about each type of coping strategy was gathered by in-depth interviews. To gauge the level of severity for each of the coping strategies, focus group discussions (FGD) were held. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis. Setting: OA villages in the states of Kelantan, Pahang, Perak and Selangor, Malaysia. Subjects: Sixty-one OA women from three ethnic groups (Senoi, Proto-Malay and Negrito) for in-depth interviews and nineteen OA women from the Proto-Malay ethnic group for three FGD. Results: The findings identified twenty-nine different coping strategies and these were divided into two main themes: food consumption (sub-themes of food consumption included dietary changes, diversification of food sources, decreasing the number of people and rationing) and financial management (sub-themes of financial management included increasing household income, reducing expenses for schooling children and reducing expenses on daily necessities).
