MARTIN CONNELL ____________________________________ Cotidie ante oculos: On the Cornerstones of Saint John’s Churches, Old and New Abstract Drawing from the Bible and the Rule of Saint Benedict, campus inscriptions on the Saint John’s campus were set in place at times when all Roman Catholic worship and art was in Latin. Because we pass them every day often without appreciating their significance and potential inspiration, Cotidie ante oculos takes two of the most unseen articles of campus art—the cornerstones of the former and current abbey churches, unrejected by builders and set in place in 1879 and 1958— and places them in the cultures, societies, and beliefs of Christian and Benedictine life in those years. The essay aims to help us who see the cornerstones day by day appreciate their petrified significance.

After it was cleaned as part of restoration it turned out to be a cross. The excavation was located outside, near the wall of the chancel of the Church of St. Nicholas (Fig. 1). The research conducted confirmed the conclusions drawn in previous years, i.e. that the church grounds had been used as a graveyard. The fact that the graveyard had been used for a long time was proved by numerous burials, overlapping grave pits and ossuaries1. Devotional items have been long connected with the Christian tradition. They include crucifixes, medals, scapulars, and prayer ropes. The fact that they are found during excavations in churches and graveyards may indicate that they were highly popular in the Late Middle Ages and the Modern Era. We know of crucifixes and other devotional items found during archaeological research conducted in churches and graveyards in such places as: Maniowy in Podhale (Chudzińska 1998), Lubiń (Białobłocki 1991/1992: 161–185), Trzemeszno (Wie- wióra 1995: 433–442), Toruń (Grupa 2005: 20–21; Kwiatkowski 2005: 31–39; Stawarz 2014: 20), Strzelno (Sulkowska-Tuszyńska 2006), Pułtusk (Kołyszko 2007: 1 Ossuaries are places where human remains were gathered after earlier burials in the graveyard and the church had been emptied (Grupa et al.

  • Fr. Jose Lopez & Fr. Bill Evans Thursday, July 23
Welcome to July 12, 2020 St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Manitowoc July 12, 2020 ♦ page 2 A message from Fr. Doug... Dear Parishioners, I appreciate your cooperation and participation as we return to church. It is good to see you! Thank you to all who are helping with the various ministries, especially those that have stepped up to help with hospitality. For the most part, we are doing really well on the changes, but I'd like to share a few clarifications and reminders: 1. We ask that you continue to enter through the main door and have your temperature taken. Like many places, it is a way to check on health. Note that we are using the thermometers that do not touch the forehead. 2. Please sanitize your hands as you enter church and wear your mask. Please at least hold the mask to your face for the protection of others. You may remove it once you are in the pew. 3. Communion will continue to be a single-file line down the center aisle, alternating sides, maintaining social distancing by family groups. (There will be no hospitality ministers in the center isle dismissing pews.) 4. We will continue to try to provide all the words for our songs on the screens. At the Grand site, the projector broke last week and sometimes we are short someone to operate the system at other sites. This is a time to challenge our Catholic memory...to sing what we remember and to appreciate the angelic voices of our cantors. I’m sorry to say that we are still on hold with choirs, as they would be seated too close to each other.

Ethnographia A Magyar Néprajzi Társaság folyóirata 129.
