Because we pass them every day often without appreciating their significance and potential inspiration, Cotidie ante oculos takes two of the most unseen articles of campus art—the cornerstones of the former and current abbey churches, unrejected by builders and set in place in 1879 and 1958— and places them in the cultures, societies, and beliefs of Christian and Benedictine life in those years. The essay aims to help us who see the cornerstones day by day appreciate their petrified significance.

Folia Archaeologica 35(2020) https://doi.org/10.18778/0208-6034.35.11 Jakub Michalik https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7495-2528 The Saint Benedict Cross or the Saint Benedict Medal Based on a Find from Archaeological Research in Gniew (Pomerania Province) Preliminary issues In 2015, during archaeological research conducted around the church in Gniew (Pomerania Province), a small fragment of a metal plate was found. After it was cleaned as part of restoration it turned out to be a cross. The excavation was located outside, near the wall of the chancel of the Church of St. Nicholas (Fig. 1). The research conducted confirmed the conclusions drawn in previous years, i.e. that the church grounds had been used as a graveyard. The fact that the graveyard had been used for a long time was proved by numerous burials, overlapping grave pits and ossuaries1. Devotional items have been long connected with the Christian tradition. They include crucifixes, medals, scapulars, and prayer ropes. The fact that they are found during excavations in churches and graveyards may indicate that they were highly popular in the Late Middle Ages and the Modern Era. We know of crucifixes and other devotional items found during archaeological research conducted in churches and graveyards in such places as: Maniowy in Podhale (Chudzińska 1998), Lubiń (Białobłocki 1991/1992: 161–185), Trzemeszno (Wie- wióra 1995: 433–442), Toruń (Grupa 2005: 20–21; Kwiatkowski 2005: 31–39; Stawarz 2014: 20), Strzelno (Sulkowska-Tuszyńska 2006), Pułtusk (Kołyszko 2007: 1 Ossuaries are places where human remains were gathered after earlier burials in the graveyard and the church had been emptied (Grupa et al.

    The Medal or Cross of St. Benedict Medals, like crosses, statues and paintings, are a time-honored means of fostering and expressing Christian faith and devotion. They remind us who we are and stir us to prayer and service. They are not charms, though often enough folk custom attaches almost superstitious meaning to them. This enter discusses the origin of the Benedictine Medal/Cross, the form which it now has which was established in 1880 at Montecassino, the use of the medal, before giving the prayer used in blessings the medals. Origin The cross is a key Christian symbol, one which Gregory the Great says Benedict used for blessing and working miracles. Through the centuries, St. Benedict has been shown holding a cross in one hand and his Rule in the other. It is not known when the first medal of St. Benedict was produced. In the late Middle Ages some letters were placed around the cross on the reverse of the medal. A manuscript from the abbey of Metten, dating from 1415, explains the meaning of the letters. Jubilee Medal of Montecassino The most familiar form of the medal of St. Benedict today is one designed in 1880 by the monks of Montecassino to commemorate the 1400th anniversary of the birth of St. Benedict. The design was produced at the Benedictine Abbey of Beuron in Germany. On the front side of the medal is the image of St. Benedict. In his right hand he holds a cross, and in his left, his Rule. On each side are pedestals recalling incidents from Gregory's life of Benedict in which Benedict was saved from poisoning.

It can be worn on a chain around the neck, attached to one's rosary, kept in one's pocket or purse, or placed in one's car or home. The medal is often put into the foundations of houses and building, on the walls of barns and sheds, or in one's place of business. The purpose of using the medal in any of the above ways is to call down God's blessing and protection upon us, wherever we are, and upon our homes and possessions, especially through the intercession of St. Benedict. By the conscious and devout use of the medal, it becomes, as it were, a constant silent prayer and reminder to us of our dignity as followers of Christ. The medal is a prayer of exorcism against Satan, a prayer for strength in time of temptation, a prayer for peace among ourselves and among the nations of the world, a prayer that the Cross of Christ be our light and guide, a prayer of firm rejection of all that is evil, a prayer of petition that we may with Christian courage "walk in God's ways, with the Gospel as our guide," as St. Benedict urges us. A profitable spiritual experience can be ours if we but take the time to study the array of inscriptions and representations found on the two sides of the medal.
