Once you have all settled in, I hope you will make the Springtime is an especially attractive season for time to invest in beach appreciation, anywhere along beach visits. None of the crowds that you would see in the coastline of The Hague. Because no matter what summer, a mild sun that will not burn your skin, and the season it is, or what the weather is like, the beach is opportunity to walk for many miles without overheating a wonderful place to clear your head, take your mind or undercooling. One of my all-time favorite pastimes is of grades and essays, and pursue some (presumably) to find what we call a ‘pan’ in the dunes – a little nest-like deserved relaxation. In a proper storm, you can ‘lie in the wind’, leaning back against its force without falling down. If you’re lucky there will be some daredevil kite surfers who ofen end up flying high up into the air as the storm winds grabs their kites. And don’t forget to reward yourself aferwards with a hot cocoa and apple pie in one of the beach places. Another thing to know about the sea in the fall is that it is actually at its warmest! In spring the sea is still cold from the preceding winter months, in summer the sea slowly warms up, and in the period between August and October it reaches peak temperatures. Here’s a short introduction to us! Otto is German and has lived in many diferent countries throughout his life, most recently India and Egypt, whereas Jort is Dutch and has only lived in Utrecht before coming to The Hague. Otto enjoys watching movies, writing and creating videos for LUC.ID, a committee he will be the chair of this year. Jort is passionate about law - he will chair the Advisory Council to the Fortuna Board and studies part-time Dutch law at Leiden University. Both really enjoy having drinks with friends, reading and leading an active life-style! We look forward to seeing you around at the campus and in town and to connect with you all through LUC’s committee life, classes and endless meet-up spots! 1. MELISSA and DANIEL We are Melissa and Daniel, representing Group 1 (obviously the best group)! We met during our intro week and since then barely spent a day without bothering each other. We are also neighbors on Floor 11 (obviously the best floor). Melissa is Cuban-Peruvian, born in Brazil, raised and spent her entire life in Denmark. She is passionate about the environment and cooperation between people, which explains her choice of the EES major (obviously the best major). If you are sporty and/ or into highly mobile activities, she is the person to go to.     The Patronage of Rembrandt’s Passion Series: Art, Politics, and Princely Display at the Court of Orange in the Seventeenth Century Introduction Between 1633 and 1646, Prince Frederik Hendrik of Orange (1584–1647) commissioned and purchased seven paintings by Rembrandt. Commonly known as the Passion Series, the paintings remain an intriguing puzzle in the world of Rembrandt studies. The Passion paintings do not, in fact, narrate the story of Christ’s Passion. Two scenes from the childhood of Christ (the Adoration of the Shepherds and Circumcision) are included, while major events of the Passion (such as the Crucifixion) are omitted. Furthermore, the paintings are on different supports, in different styles, and were assembled in a piecemeal fashion at irregular intervals over more than 15 years. Yet the series remains the most prestigious commission in Rembrandt’s career. Made for the premier patron of art in the Northern Netherlands, it was by any standards among the artist’s most valuable (as well as lucrative) projects. Seven paintings made up the Passion group in 1646; today, six survive, in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. In chronological order of production, they are: the Descent from the Cross (1633); the Raising of the Cross (1633); the Ascension (1636); the Entombment (by 1639) and Resurrection (by 1639); and the Adoration of the Shepherds (1646). A Circumcision (1646) has been lost, though a copy of the composition may exist in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Braunschweig.1 There are two main reasons to think about these paintings as a group: the first is their common size and format (about 90 x 70 cm, with slight variations, all with semicircular arched tops and ebony frames).

Overeenkomstig artikel 30 van het reglement van orde voor vergaderingen en andere werkzaamheden van de raad, beantwoordt het college deze vragen als volgt. Het aantal evenementen op en rond de Hofvijver lijkt de laatste jaren toe te nemen. Festival Classique zette in 2007 de toon. Vervolgens liet het Mauritshuis er pontons op drijven om de verbouwing in goede banen te leiden, had het WK hockey er een podium en liep Jezus over het water in het paasspektakel The Passion. Als letterlijke klap op de vuurpijl was er de eindejaarsshow van de Staatsloterij met een enorm vuurwerk. Dit jaar vond het Festival Classique wederom plaats op de Hofvijver met aansluitend het WK beachvolleybal. Afgelopen weekend was er The Hague Freestyle met wakeboardwedstrijden op de Hofvijver. 1. De Hofvijver was dit weekend vanwege het Freestyle-evenement volledig afgeschermd met hekken met zwarte zeilen. De toegang tot het evenement was evenwel gratis zodat het nut van afscherming mij is ontgaan. Wat was het nut en de noodzaak van de afscherming? De afscherming van de lange zijde en kopse kanten van de Hofvijver maakte onderdeel uit van een pakket aan veiligheidsmaatregelen om een ordentelijk verloop van het evenement te garanderen. Door het plaatsen van hekken werd beoogd om (verkeers)onveilige situaties ten gevolge van drukte te voorkomen.

  • Hall of Knights De Ridderzaal
    Hall of Knights De Ridderzaal The origins of The Hague lie in the development of a settlement around a hunting lodge dating from the 13th century, built by order of the Count of Holland. The Ridderzaal was the reception and party hall of this lodge. In the 15th cen- tury, Philips the Good held meetings here with the knights of the Golden Fleece. The son of Philip the Good, Charles the Bold, resided here for some time in order to administer justice. In the course of time the hall fulfilled a wide range of functions; during the Napoleonic days it was used as an exercise hall. Since the restoration that was carried out around 1900, the hall has been used for ceremonial occasions at a national and international level. The most important annual ceremony traditionally takes place on the third Tuesday of Sep- tember. That day, called ‘Prinsjesdag’, the queen presents the speech from the throne; thus the government officially announces her policies for the coming year. The speech will be addressed to the members of both Houses of Parlia- ment (Senate and House of Representatives). Also present during the ceremony are members of the Royal House, Ministers, State Secretaries, members of the Council of State, diplomats and persons invited. The Queen’s throne is located on a small dais. At the top of the throne you see a carved letter B. It is the first letter of the queen’s name: Beatrix. The coat of arms of The Netherlands is embroidered on the back of the throne. The hall is almost 26 metres high and the roof is a true copy of the medieval one.

ISSN: 1949-9833 Strategies of Display in the Galleries of Amalia van Solms Saskia Beranek This article situates the gallery spaces of House of Orange palaces in the seventeenth century amidst broader European strategies of display. Starting from the position that interior decorative ensembles speak directly to the identity of the resident, it is argued that Orange galleries can be used as a means by which the agendas and ambitions of the Princess of Orange, Amalia van Solms, can be examined in the absence of direct archival evidence of such practices. Since gal- leries served different purposes based on location and intended audience, a comparative study of galleries used by the same resident discloses the multiplicity of motives for their decor. A central case study of the gallery at the Stadtholder’s Quarter in The Hague reveals the idiosyncrasy of the space and the personal agendas of the resident, while also making clear the methodological necessity of approaching interiors from an integrated perspective.

A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Ingrid Frederika DeSanto 2018 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Righteous Citizens: The Lynching of Johan and Cornelis DeWitt, The Hague, Collective Violence, and the Myth of Tolerance in the Dutch Golden Age, 1650-1672 by Ingrid Frederika DeSanto Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles Professor Margaret C Jacob, Chair In The Hague, on August 20 th , 1672, the Grand Pensionary of Holland, Johan DeWitt and his brother Cornelis DeWitt were publicly killed, their bodies mutilated and hanged by the populace of the city. This dissertation argues that this massacre remains such an unique event in Dutch history, that it needs thorough investigation. Historians have focused on short-term political causes for the eruption of violence on the brothers’ fatal day. This work contributes to the existing historiography by uncovering more long-term political and social undercurrents in Dutch society. In doing so, issues that may have been overlooked previously are taken into consideration as well. Research pertaining the exposure to and acceptance of violence in the public sphere shows that, between 1650 and 1672, the municipal court of The Hague decreased the use of violent public punishment. The idea that the populace was usurping the role of judge ii and executioner, as some theories suggest, is therefore unlikely. Exploration of actual day-to-day crime records reveals that violent crime was not dominant in The Hague.

The munici- pality is the most visible level of government. Everyone is familiar with their own town or city hall. Everyone has to go there occasionally, de- spite the rapid development of e-government. The better the municipal government operates, the more effective government as a whole can function. The municipality contributes significantly to the image of pub- lic administration. It is the municipality that is increasingly acting as the driving force of policy development. Dutch municipalities and their representative organisation, the Associa- tion of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG), maintain many international contacts in the form of co-operation and partnerships with others. Obvi- ously, information on the mandate, responsibilities and functioning of municipalities in Dutch government is regularly requested.
