Sandy Dumbrowski, the new girl in town, and Danny Zuko, the school's coolest dude, had a secret summertime romance; but when they get back to school everything is different. The leader of the pack and his good-girl sweetheart must navigate the tricky high-school social waters in an attempt to rekindle their romance. In one of Broadway's longest running musicals, rip-roaring dance numbers and the soundtrack of a generation make this wonderful blast from the past a nostalgic must-see for grandparents, parents and younger fans alike. Contra Costa Musical Theatre’s all new production will incorporate songs made famous in both the Broadway and film versions, including “Summer Nights”, “You’re the One That I Want”, and the title song, “Grease.” With book, music, and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, and featuring additional music by Barry Gibb and John Farrar, Grease is already a hot-seller, with the company responding to high demand by announcing additional blocks of tickets made available for select performances. Press night will be held on Friday, March 31 and Saturday April 1, 2017. Single tickets (ranging from $45–$54, with discounts for seniors, students, and groups) are available at the Lesher Center for the Arts Ticket Office, 1601 Civic Drive in Walnut Creek, by phone at 925.943.7469, or online at www.LesherArtsCenter.org. Ticket prices are subject to change without notice. Audiences attending Friday performances are encouraged to don their best poodle skirts, leather jackets, and 50s garb for “50s Friday’s!” a celebration of all things 50s that will include a cast-lead / audience participatory “Sing- A-Long Curtain Call.” Friday audiences will vote from a selection of Grease’s biggest hits, and will be invited to get on their feet, show off their best hand-jive, and sing along with cast members in what is sure to be a party for everyone attending. “There is no better time than the spring, as students and families are gearing up for the summer, to present Grease. We have a stellar creative team led by director Christina Lazo whose work has been seen throughout the Bay Area,” says Daniel J. Boyle, CCMT General Manager & Artistic Advisor. “And it seems audiences agree, as sales have already demanded we release additional blocks of seating for a handful of performances! I’m sure Grease needs no introduction – as both young and old will have seen clips of Olivia Newton John and John Travolta singing the well known melodies. So instead I thought it would be more useful - for the benefit of those that have never seen a GAOS musical production until now – to explain that GAOS has been active in Geneva since 1971 – and has welcomed thousands of people to its shows over the soon to be 50 years. We depend on ticket sales to finance future production and we receive no sponsorship or subsidies. Over the years we have enjoyed a growing and diverse membership of people who work and have fun together on-and- off stage to produce shows of a high standard. The Really Useful Group was established by the Society over ten years ago as a means to introduce teenagers to musical theatre, and most importantly, to encourage those returning to Geneva after their studies to enrich the Society with their newly acquired skills either as actors, musicians, set designers, costume designers, lighting or sound engineers, or any of the other myriad of jobs that together make our productions so enjoyable for audiences and participants alike.

Laird Date Approved: 5 December 2016 iii Abstract In 1968, the sound of the Broadway pit was forever changed with the rock ensemble that accompanied Hair. The musical backdrop for the show was appropriate for the countercultural subject matter, taking into account the popular genres of the time that were connected with such figures, and marrying them to other musical styles to help support the individual characters. Though popular styles had long been part of Broadway scores, it took more than a decade for rock to become a major influence in the commercial theater. The associations an audience had with rock music outside of a theater affected perception of the plot and characters in new ways and allowed for shows to be marketed toward younger demographics, expanding the audience base. Other shows contemporary to Hair began to include rock music and approaches as well; composers and orchestrators incorporated instruments such as electric guitar, bass, and synthesizer, amplification in the pit, and backup singers as components of their scores.

Jacobs, who created Grease (in 1970) with Warren Casey, was born and raised on the mean streets of Chicago’s far northwest side. During the golden era of rock ‘n’ roll (1956-1960) he was a guitar-playing “greaser” student at Taft High School. In 1963, Jacobs met Warren Casey when they were both cast in a local theatre production of A Shot in the Dark. Seven years later they wrote what was to become one of the greatest musicals of all time. Grease opened in 1971 in a former trolley barn called the Kingston Mines Theatre in Chicago. A year later, Grease made it to Broadway and “Greasemania” took off, resulting in one of the longest running shows in Broadway history. The 1978 movie became and remains the highest grossing movie musical of all time. Originally an actor, Jacobs has been seen on television, in motion pictures, regional theatre, national tours, and on Broadway. He is the co-author of several other plays and musicals including Island of Lost Coeds, a musical spoof of the low budget sci-fi/horror/jungle movies of the 1950s, which he wrote with Warren Casey. In May 2014, Mr. Jacobs was presented with an honorary doctorate degree from Columbia College in Chicago. He currently resides in Southern California and remains active in the theatre, especially with the American Theatre Company of Chicago.
