Grease The Geneva Amateur Operatic Society Really Youthful Group presents: Book, Music, and Lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey "Grease" is presented through special arrangement with and all authorised performance material are supplied by Theatrical Rights Worldwide (TRW). 122-124 Regents Street, 3rd floor, London, W1B 5SA www.theatricalrights.co.uk The videotaping or audio recording of this performance is strictly prohibited Know it all Chairman's welcome Dear Friends of GAOS, on behalf of the Society I would like to welcome you to the Marens theatre here for the 2019 Really Youthful Group production of Grease. I’m sure Grease needs no introduction – as both young and old will have seen clips of Olivia Newton John and John Travolta singing the well known melodies. So instead I thought it would be more useful - for the benefit of those that have never seen a GAOS musical production until now – to explain that GAOS has been active in Geneva since 1971 – and has welcomed thousands of people to its shows over the soon to be 50 years. We depend on ticket sales to finance future production and we receive no sponsorship or subsidies. Over the years we have enjoyed a growing and diverse membership of people who work and have fun together on-and- off stage to produce shows of a high standard. The Really Useful Group was established by the Society over ten years ago as a means to introduce teenagers to musical theatre, and most importantly, to encourage those returning to Geneva after their studies to enrich the Society with their newly acquired skills either as actors, musicians, set designers, costume designers, lighting or sound engineers, or any of the other myriad of jobs that together make our productions so enjoyable for audiences and participants alike. Of course, we also hoped that a few would want to become directors as without such vision no production company can exist Thus we were really pleased when Ylan Assefy-Waterdrinker walked through our doors back in 2015. Grease will be his third production for the Really Youthful Group, and builds on the success and experience he has acquired from the various mentors in GAOS he has been able to work with. It is encouraging to see that his hard work and success - in partnership with GAOS - contributed to him gaining a place at the New Bucks University in London where he has had a very promising first year. Ylan is now passing on his knowledge to other equally talented members of the Really Useful Group so that they too will be able to direct future shows.. I hope you enjoy the show. Its going to be fun for sure with loads of energy and talent from the cast from beginning to the end. It’s hard to believe the youngest cast member is only 14 with the average age being around 17. GAOS is pleased to have such talent in its midst. If you are interested in getting involved in the society or that you would like to chat with someone first, you can contact [email protected]. Authors - Warren casey & Jim Jacobs Casey was born in Yonkers, New York, and attended Syracuse University. During the late ’50s, he learned all about “greasers” while working as an art teacher in upstate New York. He moved to Chicago in 1962, where he hoped to pursue an acting career. He appeared in dozens of productions, including creating the role of Bernie Litko in David Mamet’s Sexual Perversity in Chicago. He supported himself with jobs in retail, including working as an assistant manager of a chain of apparel stores, and as a record salesman. In the meantime, he taught himself how to play the guitar and began writing songs. Mr. Casey acted with the Chicago Stage Guild (where he met Jim Jacobs), the Old Town Players, and the Kinston Mines Theatre. The latter company staged the original production of GREASE which he wrote with Jim Jacobs. After the incredible success of both the musical and the movie, the two collaborated on Island of Lost Coeds, a musical satire of the 8-movies of the 1950s. Mr. Casey died in 1988. Jacobs, who created Grease (in 1970) with Warren Casey, was born and raised on the mean streets of Chicago’s far northwest side. During the golden era of rock ‘n’ roll (1956-1960) he was a guitar-playing “greaser” student at Taft High School. In 1963, Jacobs met Warren Casey when they were both cast in a local theatre production of A Shot in the Dark. Seven years later they wrote what was to become one of the greatest musicals of all time. Grease opened in 1971 in a former trolley barn called the Kingston Mines Theatre in Chicago. A year later, Grease made it to Broadway and “Greasemania” took off, resulting in one of the longest running shows in Broadway history. The 1978 movie became and remains the highest grossing movie musical of all time. Originally an actor, Jacobs has been seen on television, in motion pictures, regional theatre, national tours, and on Broadway. He is the co-author of several other plays and musicals including Island of Lost Coeds, a musical spoof of the low budget sci-fi/horror/jungle movies of the 1950s, which he wrote with Warren Casey. In May 2014, Mr. Jacobs was presented with an honorary doctorate degree from Columbia College in Chicago. He currently resides in Southern California and remains active in the theatre, especially with the American Theatre Company of Chicago. dIRECTOR - YLAN ASSEFY WATERDRINKER Born and raised in Geneva, Ylan grew up watching Charlie Chaplin movies and listening to musicals. He is 20 years old and just finished his first year of Bachelor in Musical Theatre at New Bucks Uni in London. Ylan has been involved in GAOS for the past four years, first appearing in the leading role of 'Gomez' in The Addams Family (2015), and impersonating the crazy 'Berger' in Hair (2016). He also appeared in numerous other shows such as West Side Story, Shrek, Jekyll & Hyde, Thirteen, Bugsy Malone, Evita, Calamity Jane, The Wizard of Oz and Pippin. Since he discovered the magic of musicals he has developed a true passion for them and wants to work in this unique world later as director of musicals. Ylan had the privilege to direct two youth shows in the past : Legally Blonde (2017) and The Best of Broadway (2018), life changing experiences for which he thanks GAOS! Directing one of the most popular musicals ever written is a blessing for a young director. Revisiting the iconic songs and dances, studying the relationship of the rebellious TBirds and the merciless Pink Ladies has been a unique challenge for this year's talented cast! He would like to sincerely thank his incredible team and crew without whom the show wouldn't be possible and also say a massive 'Break a Leg !' to his beloved cast and as the song goes 'We'll always be together!' He wants to thank especially Annika and Caroline for their support this summer! He truly hopes that you will escape for 2h30 and enjoy the energetic, fun, sparkly, moving and entertaining universe of Grease. Finally, he would like to thank his parents and sister for constantly inspiring him and always being supportive in the life of a growing passionate young man. Caroline Bailey - Musical director Originally from York, England, Caroline has lived in the Geneva area for 5 years. Although her career is tech- orientated, music has always been an important part of Caroline’s life. She started studying voice, piano and music theory in primary school and has been involved in musical theatre since her teens. Caroline is continually impressed with GAOS as both a creative and a social outlet; she will always be grateful for the open-arms welcome she received upon arriving in Geneva and for the huge trust placed in her to musically direct shows without any prior experience!! Grease is Caroline’s second outing as Musical Director, the first being the The Best of Broadway (2018). Caroline was also involved with the Youth Shows Legally Blonde (2017) and Hair (2016) in smaller backstage capacities, so has enjoyed a good four years of basking in Ylan’s glow and it is with immense pleasure that she now sees her good friend embark on the next stage of his life (and presumably noteworthy career) in her home country. Huge thanks to Ylan for another summer of fun and of course to Annika (choreo) and Monique (costumes) for their considerable time and effort, without which this show would not have evolved into the beauty that it is! Thanks also go to Patrick McDonald for covering musical rehearsals in her absence and to the wonderful cast and crew for giving it their all once again. Good job, lovely people! Annika Hebert - choreographer Annika is 20 years old and is from Geneva. She started dancing Acrobatic R’n’R at the age of 5 and she, then, started dancing Swing dances at the age of 12. Annika competed in those styles for almost 10 years on both national and international levels, winning titles such as Swiss champion in 2010. In addition to that, she also was a dance teacher and coach for juniors dancers. After having participated on a Swiss TV show called “Alors, on danse?” in 2017, Annika started learning other dance styles such as Hip Hop and Contemporary. Once she was done with high school and obtained her “Maturité” in June 2018, she decided to go to Los Angeles and to train there as she was admitted to the Millennium Dance Complex.

Broadway Starts to Rock: Musical Theater Orchestrations and Character, 1968-1975 By Elizabeth Sallinger M.M., Duquesne University, 2010 B.A., Pennsylvania State University, 2008 Submitted to the graduate degree program in Musicology and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Chair: Paul R. Laird Roberta Freund Schwartz Bryan Kip Haaheim Colin Roust Leslie Bennett Date Defended: 5 December 2016 ii The dissertation committee for Elizabeth Sallinger certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: Broadway Starts to Rock: Musical Theater Orchestrations and Character, 1968-1975 Chair: Paul R. Laird Date Approved: 5 December 2016 iii Abstract In 1968, the sound of the Broadway pit was forever changed with the rock ensemble that accompanied Hair. The musical backdrop for the show was appropriate for the countercultural subject matter, taking into account the popular genres of the time that were connected with such figures, and marrying them to other musical styles to help support the individual characters. Though popular styles had long been part of Broadway scores, it took more than a decade for rock to become a major influence in the commercial theater. The associations an audience had with rock music outside of a theater affected perception of the plot and characters in new ways and allowed for shows to be marketed toward younger demographics, expanding the audience base. Other shows contemporary to Hair began to include rock music and approaches as well; composers and orchestrators incorporated instruments such as electric guitar, bass, and synthesizer, amplification in the pit, and backup singers as components of their scores.
