"[A] shifting / identity never your own": the uncanny and the unhomely in the writing of R.S. Thomas by Fflur Dafydd In fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in The University of Wales English Department University of Wales, Bangor 2004 l'W DIDEFNYDDIO YN Y LLYFRGELL YN UNIG TO BE CONSULTED IN THE LIBRARY ONLY Abstract "[A] shifting / identity never your own:" The uncanny and the unhomely in the writing of R.S. Thomas. The main aim of this thesis is to consider R.S. Thomas's struggle with identity during the early years of his career, primarily from birth up until his move to the parish of Aberdaron in 1967. It is an analysis both of the poet's personal life and his public, national role as a poet, examining the tensions present between his numerous, conflicting identities. The discussion is separated into three main chapters. The introductory passage takes into consideration the various ways R.S. Thomas is constructed by his critics and by the media, concentrating in particular on the varying responses to his death in 2000. Chapter 1 then moves on to discuss notions of the uncanny, as proposed by Sigmund Freud and the critic Nicholas Royle, as a means of exploring Thomas's feelings of alienation and displacement throughout childhood and early adult life. Chapter 2 is a comparative study of R.S. Thomas and the Scots vernacular poet Hugh MacDiarmid, which looks at how MacDiarmid provides for Thomas a model of Celtic regeneration, enabling Thomas to relocate himself in a cultural context, and also to explore the cultural and linguistic tensions he feels within Wales, as an English-language poet.

  • One Hundred Poets from Wales Edited by Meic Stephens
Poetry 1900- 2000 One hundred poets from Wales edited by Meic Stephens FOREWORD BY DAFYDD ELIS-THOMAS LIBRARY OF WALES PRAISE FOR POETRY 1900-2000 ‘Poetry 1900-2000 is... a cultural act, and a landmark in the English-language writing of Wales. It is by far the most compre- hensive collection of Welsh poetry in English in the twentieth century which we have had – or are likely to have…. Well- designed and handsomely produced, this wide-ranging and authoritative anthology will be indispensable to those who are new to the English-language poetry of Wales and will bring new poems to the attention of those already familiar with the field.’ Tony Brown, Cambria Magazine ‘This anthology is a wonderful compendium of good poems and poets worth meeting, many worth returning to again and again. But it is also an act of empowerment that reaches beyond indiv- iduals and single artistic genres, in a way that only poetry can.’ Alan Riach, New Welsh Review ‘This is certainly a remarkable book…. It is a fine production…. What is so fundamentally impressive is the high-level intellect, the sheer grinding scholarship…. In future, when students are looking at the details of a Welsh writer’s life and work, they will look into this volume for correct information. Meic Stephens, with his huge knowledge of Welsh writers, has done this editing fairly, sensitively and comprehensively.’ John Idris Jones, Roundyhouse Poetry Magazine ‘The most important thing to say about this book is that it’s a very valuable act of cultural politics…. The second is that it’s great

  • Ageing in Welsh Fiction in English, 1906-2012: Bodies, Culture, Time, and Memory
Ageing in Welsh Fiction in English, 1906-2012: Bodies, Culture, Time, and Memory Elinor Shepley A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cardiff University 2018 i Abstract This thesis examines the proliferation of ageing characters to be found in twentieth and twenty-first-century Welsh fiction in English and argues that older people have a special significance in this body of literature. The study employs a mixed methodology, combining close comparative analysis of fictional texts with theoretical perspectives taken from cultural and literary theory, philosophy, sociology, psychoanalysis, and postcolonial studies. The introduction situates my work alongside the fields of literary gerontology and Welsh writing in English, giving focus to strands of research which have synergies with this thesis. Chapter 2 examines the influence of stereotypes of ageing on older characterisations in Anglophone Welsh fiction and argues that writers undermine and complicate these stereotypes. Representations of gossips, burdens, those with dementia, wise older people, inspirational grandmothers, older men and grandfathers, and unmarried women are analysed. Chapter 3 focuses on renderings of older subjectivity, considering protagonists’ experiences of physical ageing, alongside tensions between the changing older body and a more constant self within, and texts which represent changes in experiences of time and memory. Writers are argued to give voice to the frail and the marginalised and to reveal the influence of socioeconomic and cultural factors on experiences of ageing. Chapter 4 asserts that intergenerational relationships involving older characters tend to symbolise societal change and to reflect class and linguistic divisions between generations.
